2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

I think (thus far) the conservatives aren't coming out because they hate their choices. They drafted Perry, he sucked, they tried to get Christie and Indiana's? governor, they said no. Paul Ryan wasn't interested, same with Jindal and Rubio. Those three are probably waiting for 2016. They had a blogger for a tea party site on CNN last night, and she was still looking for her "Non-Romney option."

Does the Tea Party just not get it? A true Tea Party candidate is almost unpalatable to 98% of the nation. Honest question, save the sarcastic responses for another time please.

I think that's nonsense. You really think Rubio, with his life story, youth, etc. would have been unpalatable? Or Christie, who governs popularly in a blue state? I think both would have garnered pretty decent Tea Party support.

In terms of the current field, yeah, it's desperate and idiotic. Now they're trying to convince themselves that Santorum is the guy? He loves government more than Obama does.

I really, really don't see Christie as a Tea Party kind of guy...

The guy compared the Tea Party to OWS. He may as well have said "I LOVE OBAMMY"

They don't want Romney. That's why the others keep swinging into the lead temporarily before falling back. I don't think they require a "true" candidate. Just someone redder than Romney who is the exact sort of guy they would have thrown a primary challenger at.

Of course they want a "true" Tea Party candidate. That's why none of these bozos have stayed in the lead. Then again, that may be giving the Tea Party far too much credit.

Yes, that's probably fair enough. I still think your original statement was far too categorical though. There were terrible Tea Party candidates (Angle, O'Donnell) but there are also excellent Tea Party candidates that would be far more palatable than the current people running.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Yes but would they be electable on a national scale? Just because the Tea Party likes Paul Ryan or Marco Rubio doesnt mean the masses will.

Now we're just repeating truisms. Something like the above could be said for every candidate of every stripe. "Sure, liberals like Barack Obama, but will the country as a whole ever elect him?" etc. etc. etc.

If there are actual reasons why Rubio would be less viable than someone like Romney, I'd love to hear them.

"Liberals like Barack Obama." Uh-huh.

How did someone as smart as Kay Bailey Hutchinson lose to Rick Perry?

Because when asked why they prefer Rubio over Romney, you'll receive the following responses:
1. Ruby who? - 75% of the time
2. I'm a Romney guy - 15% of the time
3. Ricky Rubio? - 5% of the time
4. *Guy punches you in the throat and walks away* - 5% of the time

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Iowa showed what we already knew: there are 3 factions within the Republican party: Wall Street (Romney), libertarians (Paul), and religious fundamentalists (Santorum). (There's a fourth, Imperialists, but they seem to be sitting this one out after nearly destroying the country.)

When the field is large, each group can vote for its own purist. As candidates drop out, first one and then a second group will have to convince itself that a guy who is not motivated by the issue they care about will be an OK choice, or anyway a better choice than Obama.

This particular top three is really divisive because they are each mutually exclusive in their appeal to the other two groups -- in fact, in most cases the other two groups despise them. The glue is going to have to be full-on anti-Obama dementia. It will be the only way to hold the coalition together.

I didn't say he was less viable, I wasnt speaking in a truism I was asking a question. I know that might be hard for you to discern but there is a big difference.

Problem is, the full on anti-Obama dementia revolves around health care. Mitt can't bring that to the battle. That's why the others won't get behind him.

That and he's not a real Christian.

It wasn't her turn. You never get the GOP nod the first time out. 4 years from now she's your President.
The complete summary of her existence was contained in one Comment on a political blog:

Bachmann = MILF

Minnesotan I'd Like to Forget

Basically, the entire field has caved in to the imperialists, with the exception of Paul (definitely), Huntsman (sort of), and maybe some of the really minor candidates.

The bad news for the country is that the choice of 2nd faction for Romney is clear. He knows he's not getting the religious right, so he's been singing from the "imperialist" hymnbook. At least since the AEI-sponsored debate, and probably earlier.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

"Liberals like Barack Obama." Uh-huh.

So, you actually mean to tell me that in 2007-2008, liberals did not like Barack Obama? There's revisionist history, and then there's that statement.

Because when asked why they prefer Rubio over Romney, you'll receive the following responses:
1. Ruby who? - 75% of the time
2. I'm a Romney guy - 15% of the time
3. Ricky Rubio? - 5% of the time

Well, yes, of course. Romney has spent the past 5 years running for President, Rubio hasn't. Of course many people won't have heard of him. I'm not saying Rubio could jump in right now and win - that's silly.

Just making the very general point that there is no reason to think 98% of America find him unpalatable, which is what I was originally responding to.

I didn't say he was less viable, I wasnt speaking in a truism I was asking a question. I know that might be hard for you to discern but there is a big difference.

Right, fine. My point was that's the same question that's been asked of every nominee, ever. Not exactly groundbreaking stuff.

Are you trying to be a ****** or is it just natural for you? I wasn't breaking ground...I WAS ASKING A ****ED QUESTION! Ya know why...because I wanted the answer! Seriously, are you always this obtuse or just when someone asks a question about someone you like?

You were more interesting and easier to talk to when you were trying to convince us all the Wisconsin GOP wasn't out to destroy the unions. You were misguided, but at least then you were interesting.

Jingoism is Romney's way to the hard right's heart. He can't pull off the social conservative angle, so he needs to run on all that red meat "Obama the Appeaser" stuff. Newt had the same problem which is why he has been running as (R-Tel Aviv).

Somebody on one of the Politico-like sites pointed out that Romney's foreign policy might be the worst type of saber-rattling / aggression, because he would always have to be currying favor with movement conservatives. The opposite of "only Nixon could go to China."
