2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Don't watch E! and its like the Kardashians don't exist. I personally had to ban that channel in my household and I'm a lot happier.

Regarding foreign policy, I find it funny that while Bush was coddling Khadafi that was okay, but Obama authorizes taking him out and its no big deal. Imagine if those rolls had been reversed. Unless you somehow think the Europeans could have handled everything by themselves...

What I give Obama credit for in Iraq is pulling the plug completely. Clearly in a McCain admin, based on his current comments this month, we would be keeping 50,000 troops there for an unending amount of time because neo-cons still can't admit the folly of that war.
WW-II ended 66 years ago and we still have troops in Germany. Iraq now has a vacuum and I wonder what / who is going to fill it?

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

...because, of course, it's your rep who sucks, mine is doing just fine.;)

I'm not wild about my rep from the 2010 election, but I still voted for her because she votes the way I like more often than not, and no other candidate on the general election ballot offered that.

As of the last new district map I had seen, my new rep would be pretty much an automatic vote against, but the district is such that I doubt I'll get a remotely realistic competitor.

About the only positive to the redistricting situation as it stands is the state GOP overreached to the point that the courts tossed their map and (for a while, anyway) implemented their own. I'm not sure if that's going to stick in review by the Supreme Court, though.

Saddam Hussein?

My foreign policy vote goes to whichever candidate is most likely to keep the old Bush/Cheney team in the lucrative and irrelevant think tanks where they parachuted in '08.

Does that leave anyone? Am I going to have to go all the way down the list to Buddy Roemer or something?

Again Obama had NO CHOICE on when to pull the plug. The Iraqis themselves made that decision for him by not granting US soldiers immunity. Can you imagine if Obama refused to pull American troops and the Iraqis started arresting American Troops because they killed some towel head who refused to drop their AK????

I think it's a little more complicated than that. With regard to leaving Iraq, some neocons seem to following what could be called the Cartman Doctrine.

If the U.S. had a less wimpy C-in-C, the Iraqi government would respect our authoritah. And would happily grant full immunity to Americans in Iraq.

Well Red can apparently cover the entire GOP field with a few words.

Talk to the entire GOP field then, because apparently this isn't a concern of theirs. Regarding your point, I'm sure the US could have negotiated that away easily enough. Did you ever stop to think that maybe this wasn't a sticking point, but both sides used it as a reason for ditching the Bush era plan of staying on as "advisors" for who knows how long? It fits perfect: Iraqis say their defending their sovereignty, US gets to get the hell out of there with no sane person thinking they should remain. Win win all around.

I think it's actually far more simple: for any action x, if the action was undertaken by a Dem or a non-neocon Repub president then it's naive, unwise, or treasonous. If it's undertaken by a neocon Repub president then it's hard-nosed, brilliant, or deeply patriotic.

Life's pretty simple when there's only one test of a foreign policy: What Would Likud Do?

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Nate Silver has his typically ridiculously cool analysis for Iowa. Just reading his blog for the last two weeks is the equivalent of a course in sampling theory and statistical analysis.

Bottom line (but read the whole article; it's worth it):

Mitt Romney
538 forecast (most likely outcome): 22 percent
High end of forecast range: 32 percent
Low end of forecast range: 12 percent

Ron Paul
538 forecast (most likely outcome): 21 percent
High end of forecast range: 31 percent
Low end of forecast range: 11 percent

Rick Santorum
538 forecast (most likely outcome): 19 percent
High end of forecast range: 29 percent
Low end of forecast range: 10 percent

Newt Gingrich
538 forecast (most likely outcome): 15 percent
High end of forecast range: 24 percent
Low end of forecast range: 7 percent

Rick Perry
538 forecast (most likely outcome): 10 percent
High end of forecast range: 18 percent
Low end of forecast range: 4 percent

Michele Bachmann
538 forecast (most likely outcome): 8 percent
High end of forecast range: 15 percent
Low end of forecast range: 2 percent

Jon M. Huntsman Jr.
538 forecast (most likely outcome): 4 percent
High end of forecast range: 8 percent
Low end of forecast range: 0 percent

Did 5 minutes of Rush today.

Rush thinks Obama is the most liberal President since Jimmy Carter. I guess he must be thinking social issues because on everything else he's to the right of GW Bush by a long shot.

Bachmann article today in Star Tribune has Future President Michelle Bachmann indicating a Caucus miracle. Her God won't let her down.

Carry on. Today the fun ends when Mitt Romney wins Iowa and coasts the rest of the way. It couldn't have turned out better for him. The moderate vote coalesced around him. It's a shame Huntsman couldn't get any traction. And while the 23% coalesced around Romney the nut job sides of the party are fractured in 7 or 8 pieces and Romney's doing a good job keeping all them in the race as long as possible.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

And not one delegate gets chosen today. According to Wiki, rarely does the winner get to face the public in the general election.

Heck, Slick Willy only got 3% of the vote.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Still early, but the AP says that with 3% reporting, Santorum (26%) leads Paul (22%) with Gingrich 3rd (16%). Romney has 14%.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

MSNBC (with 10%) has:

.24 Kill teh gayz
.24 Mittens
.23 Kill the Fed

Everybody else looking bad (Newt .13) to trainwreck (Bachmann .06).

I'm surprised the networks are even reporting Paul's percentage. ;)

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Oh please let Paul win. I want to see every Republican on the planet have a brain aneurysm.

Not me. Not one delegate is getting chosen and Iowans have a tendency to pick the wrong person. NH and Sooper Tuesdae will be the 1st cut line.

Please let Santorum win...in fact let him get the nomination! The landslide victory for the Dems would be epic...and listening to GOPers (and Fox News) defend him could be the height of comedy! Not to mention he will be googled so much (making its meaning more popular) that it will be more mainstream than Teabagging was post Tea Party rising :D
