Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

It was a political calculation. Nothing more, nothing less.

Maybe, but he should be applauded for it. All pledges are B.S., and the only way to stop that sort of posturing is to just call it for B.S. Good on him.

BTW, when Stewart gets it, he gets it (in this case, nailing both sides). That TDS clip should be required viewing.

Please explain your rationale for making this claim. The only way I see it as a political calculation is if a candidate is positioning himself for the general election by making himself look reasonable compared to the partisans in the race - which is something that makes absolutely no sense politically at this early stage.

Did you read the whole story? He can't out Bachmann Bachmann. So, he found a way to placate the special interest group while at the same time not signing the document. He's desperate.

I did read the whole story. I don't see his approach netting him any primary votes, so the idea of this being a purely political calculation rings hollow. Maybe it *is* a pure political calculation on his part, but the net benefit to his campaign is likely nil, so what's the point?

Maybe what Scoobs is saying is that...TPaws rationale was not because he doesn't believe in the doc's tennents, but for reasons tied to the nomination. That is technically political rationale.

He isn't going to win the nomination by being more like Bachmann, to have ANY chance at all, he MUST make himself look like a resonable alternative to Bachmann to moderate Republicans and an alternative to Romney to the hard right republicans. He is setting himself up to be everyone's second choice; which isn't going to win him anything.

He had his chance in the first debate and whiffed. His campaign has been sucking the gas pipe ever since.

Dont be so sure...with the right play being everyone's number two can win you the whole thing. If you assume one of the candidates is not going to sweep through (say Bachmann wins Iowa and Romeny wins NH for example) and TPaw can get to number 2 behind each winner he is doing just fine. It is a pretty basic strategy but he needs the right guy behind the scenes pulling the strings. If he assumes the party is split then his best choice is to just make sure he looks like the second best choice for each side. If he panics though, or has another "RomneyCare" snafu he is D-E-D.

It is a serious long play, but if he takes second a few times and the "leaders" are swapping firsts the media coverage of him will flip rather quickly and things will snowball.

The Sarah Palin film debuted in Orange County, CA to an empty theater. Off to a good start!

Texas Gov. Rick Perry says he feels "called" to run. Don't know who he thinks is calling him...

Can someone who wanted to secede from the USA be the POTUS? That doesn't seem right...

He doesn't seem too savvy:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry says he'll likely decide in two or three weeks whether he'll run for president.

The conservative Republican even now doesn't wake up wanting to be president. But Perry says he also knows his wife, Anita, and others want him to run and he's getting used to the idea.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

What's his big plan to "fix" America? Pray away all the bad people?

Wonder if he'll get the same RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE reaction from conservatives for surrendering American sovereignty to his sky pimp. Ha ha, ya right.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Perry has a powerful machine behind him and as the whole "secession" thing showed he knows how to demagogue an issue for personal gain. It's such a terrible field I think he'd become the favorite.

WHEREAS, the state of Texas is in the midst of an exceptional drought, with some parts of the state receiving no significant rainfall for almost three months, matching rainfall deficit records dating back to the 1930s; and

WHEREAS, a combination of higher than normal temperatures, low precipitation and low relative humidity has caused an extreme fire danger over most of the State, sparking more than 8,000 wildfires which have cost several lives, engulfed more than 1.8 million acres of land and destroyed almost 400 homes, causing me to issue an ongoing disaster declaration since December of last year; and

WHEREAS, these dire conditions have caused agricultural crops to fail, lake and reservoir levels to fall and cattle and livestock to struggle under intense stress, imposing a tremendous financial and emotional toll on our land and our people

Good thing that whole Climate Change thing was just a hoax.
