Of course, if a politician did tell them to stop coddling their kids and make them do some exercise instead of sitting on the couch like a lump, they would be tossed out in the next election.

It's Darwinism. Anyone who would dare say something like that would either not be elected in the first place or would certainly never be re-elected. At this stage, they'd just get laughed out of the nominating process.

Meh. They were clever and stuck it in the primaries, where the gooey middle of the country doesn't give enough farks to show up. That gooey middle is the part that's been changing their opinions on same sex marriage in the last 20 years.

I voted against the anti-gay marriage thing here in Michigan 8 years? ago, but it was frankly because it was on the general election ballot. I don't care remotely enough about the issue to go show up in February or August to vote against something like that no matter how bad it makes the state "look".

And the Tea Party just knocked out a guy who so demoralized the Dems they didn't even run someone against him in 2006. Granted, letting it slip out that you haven't lived in the state you "represent" in decades will get people's blood up against you.

So what? If NC wants to ban gay marriage, let 'em. If you don't like it, move to Iowa. Hell, they'll probably let you bang a horse if you want. If Massachusetts wants to constitutionally guarantee gay marriage, fantastic! Move there and give THEM your tax dollars.

Personally, I'm for gay marriage or whatever you want to call it. I'd rather have a "legal union" recognized by the government and let the churches b*tch among themselves about who can marry.

I don't mind...but its definitely not small government.

For my part, I'll take Minnesota's approach. Way-above average government services and outstanding state outcomes have come from somewhat above average taxes. This with a minimum need to tell everyone 'what we deem acceptable'.

So long as the churches are still allowed to ***** among themselves. Which is why I really like how NY did it.

It's also worth noting that the pro-gay marriage folks outraised the antis in NC. Exit polls showed that majority of NC voters actually wanted to keep civil unions - yet they still voted to ban them. Only 46% realized that that was what they were doing.

Tough not to see that as a pretty huge messaging failure by the pro equality groups. As I've said, I support their goal, but maybe just maybe calling your opponents racists and comparing them to those who would ban interracial marriage isn't the best way to win an argument. Who would've thunk?

This is basically how the Bayh family held a seat in Indiana for so long. Extreme right winger beats moderate, conservative Democrat wins in general. The Dem running is pro gun, anti-abortion, etc.

Me too. I disagreed with Luger 90% of the time, but he was at least trying. There's almost nobody on the right side of the aisle who is in good faith.

Interestingly (TM), the Baggers lost all three primary challenges to incumbent Indiana Republican reps, so I suspect this was more about Luger being a billion years old than anything ideological.
