2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

You're behind the times. I've said numerous times in recent years that I'd accept reasonable tax increases as part of a package to fix the deficit.
That's great. I'm not proposing tax increases, just letting the cuts expire, but it's good to know you're on board if we have to put the top rate back in the 50 percent range.

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

We disagree on which is the lesser evil. I suppose there's always hope.

I know, I know. Hope <= half of one percentage point...
Really though, the politicians just reflect how unrealistic the American public is. The public wants more services or won't give up services from government, but also wants to pay less to the government. Any politicians who forced the pain of fiscal responsibility onto the American people would be thrown out on their ear and replaced by politicians who keep up the gravy train for awhile more, until it eventually all collapses.

Glad to hear you're also on board with spending cuts.

Always have been. First stop is means testing for Social Security and Medicare. Next is HUGE slashes to the War Machine.

If we let Ryan become the architect of the "recovery" we might as well just declare bankruptcy now and start ver. That the GOP embraces this guy like the bastard child of Jesus and Reagan still makes me scratch my head.

Priceless, did you just change your username?

What deficit?

Is this 3rd heavily redacted post in just the last few days supposed to convince us you don't have monomania when it comes to Walker?

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

Yea! He did it the republican way, by keeping it off the books or word tricks! If you don't count the money that you owe, it's easy not to have a deficit.

Yeah, make municipal union goons pay a reasonable portion of their health care costs. Outrageous. Rein in the power of municipal union goons to extort pay and benefits from gutless politicians who are only too willing to kick the cost of these extravagent "benefits" down the road. Outrageous.

Public sector workers should not be permitted to unionize. A belief I share with FDR. It's a racket. The unions throw their support behind candidates who are sympathetic to their demands, reasonable or not, and the unions wind up effectively negotiating with themselves. In the private sector, union goons can't "fire" management.

You and Priceless better get your talking points straight: he points to an unsourced quote that there was no deficit while you claim the only way he eliminated that deficit is through accounting tricks. Maybe you boys should get together to settle this before inflicting additional union goon analysis on us.

Either way, Walker survives recall. This time, if we're lucky, those whiney, union goon senators and representatives can leave Wisconsin and not come back. And if they need it, no doubt some unethical union goon "doctors" will provide fraudulent medical excuses.

Somewhere, George Meany is smiling.

I started a thread devoted to the budget last year. One side isn't going to be to run roughshod over the other. There has to be a compromise. There are going to have to be spending cuts - and not just to the military industrial complex - as well as letting the tax cuts expire. I'm just very opposed to the idea of balancing the budget with 100% spending cuts. As I recall, the compromise proposed by Obama last summer was 75-80% spending cuts, but the GOP would not compromise. Instead we got this "Super Congress" that was supposed to either find a solution itself or have one imposed on them via drastic cuts to the social safety net and the MIC (gee, strange how that never happened).

My budget was:

budget.jpg

Using the calculator at this site I was able to get the budget to 59% of GDP by 2018 (their goal is 60%). To do this I:
Lowered troop levels in Afghanistan to 30K by 2013 ($1.3T)
Allow all tax cuts to expire, except AMT ($3T)
Chose the president's growth rate for discretionary spending rather than inflation ($600B)
Cut missile defense ($50B)
Reversed the "Grow the Army" initiative ($90B)
Canceled remaining ARRA funds ($190B)
Freeze Average Unemployment Benefits at 2009 Levels ($50B)
Raise the Normal Retirement Age to 68 ($110B)
Use An Alternate Measure of Inflation for COLA ($100B)
Increase Years Used to Calculate Benefits ($40B)
Increase Cost-Sharing for Medicare ($100B)
Establish a Public Option in the Health Exchange ($40B)
Enact Medical Malpractice Reform ($50B)
Increase the Medicare Retirement Age to 67 ($80B)
among other things. We won't be going back to the Moon anytime soon, but we did restore some fiscal sanity.

And I did all this without raising taxes above the 1990's era levels.

We got some pretty broad solutions in that thread, but this response to my budget pretty well sums up the situation in Washington:
Congratulations. You have just eliminated yourself from ever holding political office. The above could only be accomplished by someone with an IQ above 100. I believe the maximum allowable IQ for a politician is 85. Better luck next time. ;):D

The CRB link posted previously updated in March of this year with new and expanded options.

Congratulations! You reduced the debt to below 60% of GDP in 2021, and kept it at a sustainable level through 2030.

Savings Relative to Current Law in Billions $3570
Savings Relative to Current Policy in Billions $7520

I managed to get to 52% of GDP by 2021 (it's currently 67%).

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

I was critical of the Republicans in that situation.

Sorry about Ryan, another Wisconsin F-up. Sometimes we do well, like Feingold, but lately, man, we could F up a wet dream.

I thought it was cute how in Pennsylvania, "Newt" Gingrich finished 4th in a 2-to-3-man race behind Romney (the other candidate), Santorum (not a candidate) and Ron Paul (a "symbol"). Sucks to be "Newt" Gingrich.

This is equally true for pols who tell the truth that taxes have been too low for too long.

Also: if one side says they will not accept $1 of tax increases for $10 of spending reduction, I'm pretty sure that side isn't serious.

If someone would guarantee that there actually would be $10 in cuts, then I'd sign off on it. However, cynical me thinks we'd get the $1 in tax and $1.50 in increased spending while the politicians would claim $8.5 in cuts because they did not spend the $10 they were planning to.

I need a new reality -- off to the golf course tomorrow!!

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

Here's some really good news: notorious race baiter and anti-Semite Cynthia McKinney (d-Moonbat) is reportedly planning to run for Congress again. You may recall the thrilling answer her father gave on the night of her last defeat when he was asked what caused her to lose. He said: "J-e-w-s." Man, that's classy. And so is she. I just wish that Capitol Hill cop she slapped would have busted a cap in her worthless a*s when he had the chance.
