Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

I put no words in your mouth. Your post merely reminded me of something. And for the record, quite a few of the flags I see on the sides of houses fly 24-7.

They shouldn't do that, unless the flags are illuminated at night. And any flag that's torn or worn should be destroyed. But what does this have to do with the Occupy punks?

You may recall in the last year there was a Marine father who was displaying a flag outside his home that he said would fly until his sone returned from overseas. Problem was, the flag was in terrible shape. Not just frayed at the ends, but like a dishrag. Shredded. He was wrong. His pledge to fly that flag until his son came home does not trump proper display requirements. There are no excuses or reasons acceptable for improper display of the flag. None. In my experience, it is businesses that violate these requirements more than individuals on their homes. Because most homeowners, again in my experience, only display the flag on a few days of the year. You should let these people know (via an anonymous letter, of course) that they're showing disrespect for a flag they presumably respect. Some of them doubtless mean well, but just don't know the rules. Others, well, there are probably others. But their disrespect for the flag is not ameliorated or balanced by the unwillingness of these parasites in Chicago to carry a flag with them on a "patriotic" march. Tu Toque.

Well, after 10,098 posts, I don't think he's going away anyway...

OP, why don't you put some of that righteous indignation to good use? Here's the address:

Smithsonian Information
PO Box 37012
SI Building, Room 153, MRC 010
Washington, D.C. 20013-7012

that you should write to to inform them that they need to destroy this.

There's no gray areas, right? Violating the rules of flag etiquette is 'always wrong. period." according to you.

You make me want to go buy a flag to fly in the rain just because I'm guessing that would cheese you off, too.

Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

Did anybody actually watch the debate last night?

Apparently the CW is Romney won by default, Perry looked like even more of a fool than usual if that's possible, and everybody else held serve in their various niches, which won't be enough.

If any of that is remotely true, I'm surprised and pleased we averted the Perrycalypse.

Here's a wonderful still of the disembodied head of Zombie Reagan Jesus hovering over the congregation:

I still don't see a scenario in which Romney does not win the nomination. Good chance he's the next chief.

Re: 2012 Elections: Corndogs for everyone!

If Romney is nominated the Tea Party is a complete failure.
Not if they push him into their Fantasyland, and not if they force some Palinesque potted plant on him (ahem, Cain) as his VP.

I'd say the TP, for all its inanity, has to be considered one of the most successful pressure movements in recent political history, regardless of whether it was legit or astroturfing for fun and profit. Compare its real policy impacts to Paul, Nader or Perot. You have to go back to the environmentalist movement for anything that actually made as "good" on its agenda.

Romney - Obama would (will?) be like watching a proxy battle for the board of Goldman-Sachs. They should debate wearing NASCAR-like labels of each of their bankster sponors. Heck, they shouldn't even debate at all -- just send out the PR teams for Citicorp and Lockheed-Martin vs AT&T and the AMA to duke it out.

It's a failure. Romney isn't a purist. He's your typical power hungry change his mind do anything to get elected suckle up to Wall Street flip-flopping lip service politician. The movement not being able to control something as simple as the GOP nomination process where they would have the most control shows a COMPLETE lack of cohesiveness and focus.

Meh. I know you're doing your schtick, but I've actually heard people suggest this as CW, and I don't buy it. The only way to control a large party nomination is incumbency (obviously), a shitload of money plus tenure (c.f. Dole), or a shitload of money plus an additional fuckton of money (c.f. Dubya). What's missing in that? Ideas. Ideas can influence, but they never deliver the cheese on their own. Supply side needed Ronnie's acting skills (important) and trainloads of Orange County cash (more important) to get it over the top. The TPers would need some sort of alliance with the real money, but the real money knows that's not a tiger they want to ride.

You nailed it. As soon as the Tea Party merges with one of the parties, it ceases being relevant. If success means taking control of the GOP (and only throwing out the bums on the other side), it has failed in order to succeed.

I think we're still in a wait and see mode on that as very little of what they're advocating has actually been enacted at this time. Back in 1995 there was all this talk of the GOP had "won" the debate on economics/budgets, the Republican Revolution, Happy Newt Year, etc etc. I'm not sure if anything in the Contract with America actually became law although one can presume welfare reform would not have happened so give them that. Now if Perry gets elected, McConnell has close to a 60 seat majority and Paul Ryan's Medicare/Tax cut for GOP campaign contributors legislation gets signed into law, then yes they would have been successful. All we've done thus far is get the country's credit rating downgraded for some vague promise to bring the deficit down by 5% a year over the next 10 years.

What I'm curious about is what the deficit commission with essentually free reign comes up with. If there are *any* tax hikes included its going to set off a battle royal between the two wings of the GOP (TP vs establishment).

For comparison's sake Perot's big cause, a balanced budget, did come to fruition largely due to him putting it front and center in the political debate. First the GOP co-opted it, then Clinton but 5 years later it happened.

I think you may have succinctly summed up the 2012 Presidential and Congressional elections in one sentence.

I heard (NPR?) the deficit commission has been spending all its time crafting legislation that negates the requirement for them to exist or do anything at all with the budget. It was 100% hoax.
