2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Looking forward to some football. Won't be able to make a UMD home game but I'll be in Winona and St. Cloud. Can't wait.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Copying & pasting my posts from D2Football.com:

A win is a win, but certainly disappointing and many causes for concern in the wake of the 20-13 victory that, honestly, we were fortunate not to lose. The offense was not sharp at all. The offensive line was not giving Bauer much time, many of his throws were inaccurate even when he had time and there were multiple passes that were at least relatively accurate, but bounced off the receivers hands/numbers. The defense did a good job of bend, but don't break, however they bent WAY to much for my liking. Here are my thoughts on the questions coming out of the game:
1. Is UMD worse than we thought?
I'm not ready to say that...yet. Need at least one more game to see if this was just an anomaly. Could've some first-game jitters and/or rust, and there certainly have been a lot of distractions this last week. The line play, especially on offense is very concerning to me however.
2. Is CSP better than expected?
I'd say yes, and I'd be surprised if I'm wrong. UMD wasn't at their best, but CSP often just looked good. For most of the game it didn't look like a superior team was handing an inferior team the game, just two close to equal teams duking it out, and one being better at finding a way to win.
3. Did UMD miss the suspended/injured players?
I think that was part of it. The running game mostly sputtered in the first half and Sikorski is still the best RB on the roster, his return should help at least a little. The paper said the suspended players were all reserves, but Wiese did say they were players that would play "significantly." I'm sure it hurt our depth, especially after the injures, but I don't feel like the game would have been significantly different, but, again, we'll need at least one game with those players to really determine their effect or lack-thereof.

UMD Uni Watch:

I like them, and I do think they are an upgrade, but they're not perfect. They really look good from up close, and in front. From the back it's a whole lot of maroon with nothing to break it up. From the stands the black above the gold around the arms gets completely lost. I would like to have seen the gold go all the way and also tuck around the arms to the back of the jersey. I think the pants would be strong with some kind of gold striping or piping or perhaps make them a contrasting color like previous years:

I really want to like the Bulldog helmet better than the UMD, and I do from up-close. However, from the stands it just looks like a gold blob on the side of the helmet, whereas the old design really stood out, even from far away.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

I've never been a big fan of the uMd helmets. It was surprising how much UMD struggled to win last weekend. Time will tell if it was due to first game jitters/suspensions/Concordia being better, or if UMD is not as good as expected. Here's hoping it's the former! Go Dawgs!

You've about summed it up. Let's see how they do this weekend.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

I think the GLIAC schedulers must've been trolling the rest of the league when they booked four of MTU's five home games after October 15th. :p

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

They better put the cops out on the bridge over the Grand River, to make sure nobody leaps. GV now 0-2, and staring 0-3 in the face with Ferris coming up next week.

Actually, the mood is more to take up torches and pitchforks, and run a certain son in law out of town. The Lakers have had 2 games where they've had leads late and have just let the win slip through their fingers. ODU got some calls, but they still played a hell of a game. But they still look lost at times. They were bumbing around at the end of the half with a two minute hurry up when they had 2 timeouts left, only to waste a lot of time and end up getting picked off late. Then, early in the fourth quarter, the Lakers are driving and they have a Fourth and inches situation. The Lakers are up by 10 at the point, meaning that the Panthers are kind of hanging around. Instead of just manning up and getting themselves a half a yard when they needed to, they dinked around trying to draw ODU offsides and ended up taking a delay of game, and end up punting the ball. ODU manages to get a quick hitter that goes all the way right after that and then GVSU goes on to play to not to lose, and well, it was like watching a farking Lions game. ODU drives the field and goes up by four with another TD. GVSU then gets the ball back with about 3 minutes left in the game, and then the receivers hands turn to stone. The really only big gain we got on that drive was when somebody on the OLine blew an assignment and let our QB get totally destroyed right after he threw a pass. The refs called roughing the passer and an unsportsmanship penalty because that guy got up and taunted him right in his face when he was trying to figure out which way was up. Couldn't even get close after that. Just a poorly managed game.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

UMD flirts with disaster, coming back to beat Augustana in overtime. A win is a win, but they certainly haven't looked dominant so far.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Only saw the first quarter and the last 2 minutes of regulation and the OTs, so I can only go off of that, media summaries, and what people have talked about on here. Here are my thoughts after the first two games:
Pros:
-We are finding ways to win, which good teams always do.
-We are gaining yards.
-Our defense has been pretty stout, and improved from week 1 to week 2.
-With the emergence of Bofferding we have a pretty good core of receivers with Zweifel, Roth, Faulks and Bofferding. While none are better than Winfield, it might be our best receiving ensemble since the Battaglias.
-The coaching staff made a great adjustment in emptying the backfield and relying on Bauer

Cons:
-Despite gaining yards, our offense has been inconsistent and has had a problem finishing drives.
-Our offense line has seemed shaky to me both in consistently opening running lanes and in giving Bauer time to throw the ball.
-Bauer seems to have happy feet and I'd like to see his accuracy improve greatly
-I've also seen more drops, some in clutch situations, than I'd like
-While we have found ways to win, we have also not found ways to put games away. We had multiple chances to win in regulation last week and didn't take advantage
-I'm still not sold on the uniforms.

I still think this team has a lot of potential and could really come together by the end of the year, but as many have already said, they certainly don't look like a top 5 team as of yet.

D2 Football playoffs to go from 24 to 28,

On a whole, I kinda like the idea, just that I can see a lot of ****ing and moaning about who gets the 1 spot as that's the clear pick to have the one bye in the seven team region. One thing that's bit of a bummer is that they're thinking about bumping up the distance to travel before they'll cover flying the team in to 600 miles, up from 500 miles. That's going to be hard on those seven seeds who earn their first playoff bid ever, and then find out that they're some 580 miles to the second seed's stadium.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

My thoughts on UMD's game last Sat. vs. Winona:

Very good win for us this week. I had said we needed 200 yards passing, but I didn't think we'd be so successful running the ball. I think we've shown that while we'll never be confused for Air Coryell, we can pass when we need to. I didn't actually see the game, so I'll trust the eyeball test of those who did, but I think the 424-360 yardage edge leads me to believe that it wasn't just superior special teams that won us this game. 30.4 yards per completion is an awful lot, so it would be nice to cut down on the big plays, however having an opponent only complete 1/3 of their passes really mitigates how much damage the big plays do. I really hope the players don't get complacent, but I really don't see another loss on the schedule. I'm sure St. Cloud will be up to try and salvage something of their season and anything can happen with a bunch of college kids, but I am pretty confident about the rest of the regular season. I even think this team looks a little like 2010 team in the Semifinals and Finals after losing both Odim and Winfield. We are finding ways to win with defense, special teams, and just enough offense. I'd never go back and change anything about a Nat'l Championship year, because too much needs to go your way, but I truly believe that if Odim and Winfield had been available for all games, Odim would have won the Harlon Hill and the 'Dogs would have won all their playoff games much more comfortably, instead of 3 of the four games coming right down to the wire. I think that 2010 team, at full strength, is among the best D2 teams ever assembled.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Yah, that was a good road win against a tough team. Always good to see that type of win. Hopefully they can build on that, though their schedule isn't that tough going forward.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Tech and Ferris meet next weekend in a clash of unbeatens.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

SR3 gets an interesting twist as the Gorillas take out top ranked NW Missouri State. Looks like you could possibly see the defending champion Bearcats out of the playoff picture if things don't get shaken up a bit further in the coming weeks. UMD is unbeaten and shouldn't have much trouble making the playoffs, but they don't seem to be quite the dominant team they have been in recent years.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

The Mavericks need to play someone. They'll only likely be tested once more with Sioux Falls in two weeks.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Playoffs have started. Michigan Tech chokes away a 14 point lead, misses an extra point, and misses a 28 yard field goal as time expires to lose to Angelo State 42-41.

UMD scores 19 points in the last 10 minutes of the game to defeat defending National Champion Northwest Missouri State 25-21.

Quite the different weekends in this Husky and Bulldog household. Here's to UMD proving they should have been seeded higher!
