2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Playoffs have started. Michigan Tech chokes away a 14 point lead, misses an extra point, and misses a 28 yard field goal as time expires to lose to Angelo State 42-41.

Bonus ow: it was the kicker's last game as a senior.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Quite the different weekends in this Husky and Bulldog household. Here's to UMD proving they should have been seeded higher!
UMD's Strength of Schedule numbers weren't all that great as they did nothing but beat up a pretty lousy NSIC north and they ducked playing Mankato or Sioux Falls. Not that the rest of the NSIC or even the MIAA had all that great of numbers either. Hopefully it, getting hosed in the playoff seedings will do more to put an end to this fad of all conference scheduling that's been going on lately. There's always somebody out there that will play you.

Just to be clear, UMD didn't duck Mankato or Sioux Falls. I don't think teams get to choose who they play or don't play in the other NSIC division. The schedule is what it is, and UMD does play in a weak northern division. This may have benefitted them this season, as they seemed to take while to put the pieces together this year. I'm not a fan of having no out of conference games, as is the case with both the NSIC and MIAA. And the current NSIC is so big it really is pretty unwieldy and has some pretty great disparities from top to bottom. A team like Crookston just doesn't seem like a competitive team, but do you give teams like that the boot? The Committee putting Pittsburgh State above UMD in the regional ranking seemed to raise a lot of eyebrows and also points to the problem of no OOC games.

Hopefully after another season or two of this mess come playoff time, the powers that be in the NSIC and MIAA will come to their senses and go back to ten game league schedules that allow for teams to go out and schedule non-conference games. That and I believe that sooner or later the NSIC is going to break up over one issue or another. Just going with the Minnesota schools in one league with the Dakota/Iowa/Nebraska schools in the other would give you two pretty nice conferences.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

As a GVSU fan its been a pretty lousy year for me. However, the fact that Ferris State has its defense exposed a little the last month of the season and got hammered by ODU in the playoffs brings a little joy to my world. :D

Some tight games this past weekend, but it's nice to see an all NSIC regional final between undefeateds Mankato and UMD. Gotta figure whoever comes out of Region 3 will have a good shot at going all the way.

I'd rather see #1 and #2 meet in the final rather than quarter final, but it should be a great game.

Agreed. The way Region 3 is stacked with the NSIC and MIAA in particular, one could argue that it's tougher to get out of region three than to win the games thereafter. Hopefully they rebalance things a bit at some point. Region 3 had like 5 of the top 7 or 8 teams in the rankings near the end of the season.

Its kinda doubtful that they'll shift conferences around just to even out a "Power inbalance". Odds are it will just shift around sooner or later. Heck, who knows, 5 years from now we could have GSC and SIAC fans complaining about their superregion being too deep.

What they really need to do is do away with preset regions and just take the overall top 24 teams, and then break it up into regions after all of that.

They do shift things around for various reasons though, as UMD used to be in the same region and Grand Valley, California (PA), etc. and not with NW Missouri and the Gorillas, which is a relatively recent shift. Anyone following D2 football could see when you throw the NSIC in with the MIAA when they did that you were stacking that one region real heavily. The GAC improving as they have just make the region another notch more difficult. I don't recall the reasoning of why the NSIC was thrown into the MIAA region, do you?

I agree they should do away with the preset regions, but that strikes me as less likely to happen than more shifting amongst the regions.

We weren't ever in a region with Cal, we played them in a national semi. We were with the GLIAC and RMAC. I'm not sure why they made changes in the way they did.

That's right on Cal. Forgot that was a semifinal.

This latest shift is pretty much because somebody on the D2 Volleyball Committee complained that the football regions were different than what they were for volleyball, basketball and all other D2 schools. Never mind the fact that there's far fewer schools out there without football than those with Football. So she came up with the bright idea of combining the 8 regions for D2 sports around together into 4 Super-Regions for football. Given that her solution to her issue wasn't laughed out of the room, we're now kinda stuck with how things are right now until the NCAA gets wise to the fact that they're often going to have to end up footing the travel bill during the playoffs for LSC and RMAC teams to come to the GLIAC and GLVC and visa versa. While at the same time those teams are going right by GAC, MIAA, and Northern Sun schools that just might be under the 500 mile travel mark as to were they are obligated to pay to fly teams to their games in the playoffs.

That or we get a large number of teams that either leave or join the division and they are forced to balance out the regionals again.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Pumped for the playoff game in Mankato. This is the matchup everyone in the NSIC has wanted all season. Hopefully I can catch the game on TV.

Unfortunetly I will be in Duluth for hockey and other shenanigans and cannot make it (in theory I could but I don't want to do that much driving plus other reasons). Even UMD gets the upset and Ohio Dominican wins, UMD will host but then I cannot attend that one either! Bah.

I'd find a bar in Duluth and pregame the hockey game early with the football game.:)

As far as I can tell, the game isn't on TV, only webcast.

Hopefully CSU-Pueblo will have something to say about that. :)

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Mankato took care of business Saturday and now hosts a semifinal game with Concord. Thanks to UMD for a great season and go Mavericks! Bring back another title to the NSIC and SR3.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

CSU-Pueblo hosts West Georgia in the other Semi-final. It is kinda nice to see another GSC team get through the playoffs that's not one of the Three Headed Monsters, either Delta State, North Alabama, or Valdosta State.
