Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread
I addressed FSU having a waiver from the NCAA already. Some of the games took place before the NCAA issued its' decree of Native American nicknames thus Minnesota only had its' own policy to go on. The other games that I referenced were almost certainly scheduled before the NCAA issued its' decree, so again Minnesota only had its' own policy to go on.
What's your point? They were scheduled before the NCAA policy, but were they scheduled
after the Univ. of MN policy?
Lucia has not gone against the University policy, but given the number of times other Minnesota teams have played Florida State since the policy came into effect it's evident that the policy can and is disregarded from time to time. Lucia could have attempted disregard the policy if he really wanted to. But the UND games weren't that important to him, so he didn't. And let's say he did attempt to disregard the policy, why would the board of regents say no when they had no problem playing Florida State? My whole point here has been that Minnesota has a policy that it applies at times and ignores at other times. You seem to think I am on some sort of witch hunt against Lucia and I am not. Don't get mad at me because your University is inconsistent and I'm pointing it out.
No, it's not evident at all. So far you have cited examples of games that were played the same academic year as the policy being approved, a game played against a team that had permission from the NCAA to use a Native American nickname, and a game to be played against a team that
used to be on the "hostile and abusive" list but is no longer. How is there any evidence that this policy can be "disregarded from time to time" except for games that they are contractually bound to? The policy itself uses language such as
"make every effort not to schedule home events" and "every effort not to host" rather than saying they "absolutely will not play, at any venue or under any circumstance". You are either not comprehending what the policy says, being lazy about reading it or choosing to ignore its implication.
As far as I can see, the only possible instance of the Univ. of MN ignoring its policy would be the basketball team playing FSU in Nov. 2004. Maybe they did just ignore the policy in that
one instance....far more likely they played it due to contractual obligations with the Big 10 and the ACC.
And for the record, what Indiana did a number of years previously does not imply what contractual obligations may or may not have been in place in regards to the Univ. of MN in 2004.
