2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

The players supposedly decided yesterday that it wasn't fair that the owners got to have a stupid demand in the summer and they didn't, so they mentioned yesterday that they expected to be paid for 82 games this year regardless of how many are played. I'm hoping that was a rumor, because the only real response to that is **** off.,

They are the ones being locked out by the owners. A reasonable expectation of compensation.

Granted I'm a union guy.

Deep in my repressed memories is a recall that when the MLB had a labor stoppage, players with guaranteed contracts still got paid what was on their contracts.

BUT -- MLB does not have a salary cap. If the NHL players got the full $ value of 2012-13 contracts, the escrow would take care of the excess.

It might be that the players are also trying to make sure that guys whose contracts were extended past this year or who signed last year for big dollars, get paid even if that would put the team over the cap. I think they should personally.

fool me once....

you have to believe that the teams were more than happy to sign all those guys before the lockout expecting the same "we'll take a 25% cut" bs that they offered last time with no give and take.

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

If it were the players striking I could understand them not getting paid for the full season but, since they're being locked out, it makes sense to get it.

Finally...some good news coming out of the lockout! :D

Retailers say the NHL lockout has led to a boost in sales of sex toys and lingerie among couples.

“We’d be gearing up for (NHL hockey) now but there’s nothing so I guess we need to find some better ways to spend our time!” said Vinay Morker, owner of the Hush Lingerie and More boutique, while at Edmonton’s Taboo Naughty But Nice Sex Show Saturday.

Old joke time....why do Canadians do it doggie style???

Wait for it

So they can both watch Hockey Night in Canada! :p

All games through December 14 canceled as well as the All-Star game.

At this point, why don't they just bag the whole $@mn season? Who cares anymore???

Pretty much.
Neither side is actually interested in negotiating, they want to break the other side which basically ensures a deal will never get done.

The irony is that both sides need each other. The players need the owners to run and operate the teams, and the owners need the players union to avoid any anti-trust complications to running the league (no players union=no salary cap).

Until these idiots realize they are partners in this, not adversaries, the cycle of labor unrest isn't going to stop. Even if the owners crush the union this time, all it will do is ensure that we get a strike when the next cab happens.

Tom Boswell wrote a nice column the other day in the Washington Post on the dangers of negotiating with Don Fehr. The gist was stop trying to demonize the union and work together and everyone makes money. It took baseball almost 20 years to figure it out.

I really think the NHL wants to count coup against the union. This decertification talk that is just starting to come out are ranging shots by the union. Pretty soon, they're going to drop a big one on the NHL and the owners are going to be in a lot of trouble.

Yeah...I'd be okay if the season was cancelled (not happy, but okay) as long as there was real change, a good CBA, revenue sharing, etc. However, I'm afraid that if their biggest priority isn't getting back on the ice as soon as possible, if they cancel this season they might not have a deal in place by the time the next one's supposed to start.
