2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

I think Mariucci is a no-brainer if we can make it work. I'd certainly pay significantly more to get out on that ice for a boatload of reasons. STA does looks like a completely viable secondary option at this point, though. Overall I think we're in a pretty good spot regardless.

If Mariucci is viable, I'm ALL for that.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

The insurance at the U is standard between the rinks. If we could have guaranteed that all players were USA Hockey members, they would drop the insurance. That is, however, $40 for someone to join, so it's not a viable option.
Gotta agree. With 30 players, the $180 insurance policy comes out to $6 each. So it's not even a close call.

Only indirectly relevant, but let me quickly recommend that anyone who's considering joining USA Hockey look before they leap. It's been a number of years since I was a member, but I didn't think it was a particularly good value. There is a monthly magazine. There wasn't anything in particular wrong with it, but I would never have paid cash for it at a newstand. As far as I could tell, the only other benefit was the insurance coverage, which also seemed overpriced -- at least for someone playing in a no-check league.

If you're looking to make a charitable donation, that's another matter. But otherwise the only real reason to join is if you're playing in a league that requires it.

The hourly rental rate at Ridder is slightly less. I've played there in a charity tournament last spring, and it's kept in as good of condition as Mariucci. I think the same guy manages both ice rinks, seeing as how they're 50 ft apart. The locker rooms in Ridder a little nicer, too. It only makes sense, though, seeing as how it's a newer facility.
Good information.

Just to grab a number out of thin air, let's say "slightly less" means $30 per hour less. In other words, a savings of $60 for the session. In per person terms, you can have Mariucci for $2 more. Unless there's a timeslot issue, Mariucci probably gets the nod over Ridder.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

OK, finally reached the manager at Ridder and Mariucci. No ice in Mariucci in early April - they will be taking the ice out for another event (high school robotics competition). We can get Ridder if we want, but it'll be $170 for insurance + $200/hr or $400 for our block so $570 or $19 each for 30 skaters. Or we can go to STA. Also note parking near Ridder can be difficult and expensive unlike STA which is free and right on site.

Thoughts?

G - Thanks much for doing this!
It does not matter to me though I would give more "weight" to the votes of the out-of-towners since their opportunity to skate at Mariucci/Ridder is far more limited than mine. :)

Exactly my thoughts.

Put another way, is it worth $11 per customer to skate at Ridder as opposed to STA?

Personally, I'd give thumbs up to either option. The opinions of those that are definitely skating should be given the most weight.

Another factor to consider: My information is that the FF Title Game will face-off at 6:00 PM Central. So the Posters' Game should be complete no later than 3:00, if Saturday is chosen. Since it sounds like the ice times are wide open at both rinks, it's probably a non-issue. But it is something to keep in mind, just in case.

Agreed. It does look like either Ridder or STA is available for a reasonable time frame to let people sleep in, then play, then shower and <strike>eat</strike> drink before puck drop.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

Bump.

OK, the question is...Ridder for about $19/each or St. Thomas Academy for under $10 each. STA is a DIII and high school rink and very nice not too far from downtown St. Paul, Ridder is the UMN women's rink on UMN campus, similar distance from the Xcel. I'd like players and potential players to weigh in on the question.

Thanks!

And because the questions have come up in the past...

Both facilities have showers and excellent ice. Ridder has a warmer ambient on-ice temperature than STA. At that time of year, it might be seen as too hot of a building by some. Ridder has larger locker rooms. Being in Stadium Village, Ridder is walking distance from a number of bars. STA is not. You will either have to pay for parking at Ridder, or be a lucky person who's able to find a lot or ramp/garage that's not charging that day. For all intents and purposes while you're on the ice, Ridder is Mini-Mariucci.

STA is a nice rink, that shouldn't be overlooked. It has a warming room for any wives or kids that will be along.

All that said, I've played in both, and I'm game for whichever rink.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

Given the reported compliance with our group's needs, and attentiveness, I'd vote STA. But I"ll go wherever. Honestly, it really doesn't matter to me if it's not The Mecca.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

Date and time TBD, but most likely is Saturday, April 9, at about noon. I figure if we wrap up at 2 PM people will have time to shower, go to hotels change and pregame before the 6 PM puck drop. Given both venues are open on this date, that's my target.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

I'm not sure if I'll be able to play this year, but given the options of STA and Ridder, I'd go with STA as well.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

As a potential player, I'd vote for STA as well. I'd also vote for Friday evening as I'd have a better chance of playing in the game.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

I also think that Friday evening would be better, as long as it gets done by 6-7, so there is time for some dinner and ample drinking time.

Somewhat related...above the urinals at St. Thomas:

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

Is there a roster for this yet? If you need a goalie, I can probably play.

I'd also like to throw in my vote for St. Thomas Academy. Newer rink, great ice, relatively inexpensive, and easy to get to from St. Paul.

No roster yet, we'd love to have you play. Any preference on day - Friday or Saturday?

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

Since we are asking for votes- I don't really have vote for location, but would rather play on Saturday, noon-ish. That way we can go enjoy a long dinner on Friday, be able to play, clean up, eat, and then watch the championship game.

For position- I'm more of a D, but can play anywhere.
