2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

Postgame eats and drinks is an appealing idea. But in the past, the results have been decidedly mixed.

If the icetime is Friday evening, postgame generally works. In Boston, most of us made it to a nearby TGIF. In DC, maybe half the participants partook at a sports bar in the same complex. Certainly a good time was had by all who did.

When the icetime is on Saturday, getting people to stay around is a taller order. In Denver there was a very tight connection between the end of the Posters' Game and Face-off at the Title Game. To the best of my knowledge, no gathering was scheduled. The St. Louis schedule was a bit more forgiving, but still a little tight. A postgame gathering was planned for a hamburger bar that was attached to the rink. Literally no one stayed. On the other hand, Milwaukee included an "OctoberFest" type establishment that went over fairly well.

Schedule with care. If there isn't an adequate timeslot, your players will blow off the postgame.
FYI, there is a group of us that is planning on going to Gastof's for das boots on Friday night. Depending on the time of the posters game, people may just want to plan on going to Gastof's afterwards.

also, the last time we all went there, final 5 last season, there was a 50% puke rate, and we were a group of very experienced drinkers, by tech standards.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

I suppose I could come over and shoot the game if I'm still working where I'm at if it's in Vadnais and on Friday...

I don't think most of the people playing in this game want their "skills" broadcast to too many people.

Warning to everyone. I am pretty much that Mendoza kid on The Mighty Ducks 2. I am fast, can dart around and turn on a dime.

Can't stop. At all. Mental block at this point.

It'd make for a fun story on how people from all over the country, get together once a year to play a hockey game with people they met from a website.

Included in that group was a guy who literally kept swallowing his puke for about 1/2 hour, so as not to get thrown out. There was also the guy who projectiled across the table, and another one who was told "you're either sleeping at home, or in jail. Not here. Decide now."

And of course, GLM's infamous quote, "Hey, uh, Brenthoven? The good news is that I made it to the tile of your bathroom..."

Gasthof's is at another level. Word of warning.

Yeah, I don't know. I knocked over MEg by passing her the puck from about 20 feet away, and hitting the pass tape-to-tape.

Maybe I can win $10,000 on American Funniest Home Videos...

I'll split it with you...Just don't tell her!

I can just see the YouTube comments now:

Oh look! They let the Special Ed kids play hockey =0P

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

I'm just curious as to how many of you are on the ice regularly...or is this about the only time you strap on the skates for the year?

Right now I'm playing three or four times a week, depending on when there's ice. At the same time, I'm really fat, so it offsets somewhat.

In the summer I play twice a week in league. In the winter once or twice in league and try to make it to the outdoor rink the rest of the days. That said, I didn't learn to skate until I was in college (31 yo now), had a five year layoff at one point, and only skated a few times in a couple other years, so I'm definitely no brianvf. The league I'm currently in has me in the "experienced adult rec player" category.

I don't know the exact crossover between USCHO and GopherPuckLive, but GPL has a city league they are in. Called "The Rubes." Go figure. ;)

Editor's note: no, I'm not part of the team, even though I have a jersey.

Jersey and no skates. Tsk. Brenthoven: Puckbunny.

That's why I haven't seen you in the locker room? I kept wondering why you were skipping out every week.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

Dirty little secret about Brenthoven: Never learned how to skate. Tried rollerblading once, to ease into it. After a year, practicing everyday, I could turn a little, slowly. Could go straight. Couldn't just stand still, and couldn't stop. My method of stopping? Find the curb, faceplant into the grass. :o

But with a team name like "Rubes," how could I NOT ask to buy a jersey?! :p

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

If it hadn't already been thoroughly eliminated, Augsburg would be a crappy location. And I'm saying that as somebody that lives less than a mile away.

St Thomas sounds like the best option, though it's technically not just a straight shot down 35E, as there's no Mendota Heights Rd. exit.

Even though I'm local, I probably won't know if I can play until after regionals. Going to wait and see who makes it, then judge my interest/ticket availability, and decide if I'd rather stay for the Frozen Four or go to a conference at Penn State that weekend.

It's the only time I play all year.

I quit hockey a little over a decade ago when my company league got to "serious". The lack of sportsmanship was very glaring.

But I really enjoy getting out this once, and then the next day's massive diaphram cramp.

I suck at skating (not as much as hoven obviously), but I am in for this part of the event! I am happy to say I was not part of the puke parade last time. :D
