2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

pgb, xyz and I are in touch already. I think xyz has a better handle on the rinks on that side of town, being from Vadnais. Now if we wanted to play a game in the SW suburbs, those I know. I need to get Greyeagle involved too as a St. Paul native, maybe recruit he and his son to play as well.

Count me out this year. Taking an EMT class from 1/3 through 4/12. :( And applying for nursing school. And studying for the Pre-Nursing school exam. :(

Well, best of luck with all of that. We're proud of you, and you will be missed.

We need to trade e-mails regarding spreadsheet/registration. You may want someone else to handle that this year. Or maybe not. Let me know what you're thinking.

xyz e-mail received. Will put both of you on the organizers' e-mail list. Do recruit Greyeagle. Based on his many fine posts, I know he'd be a great addition.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

I am going to make a good effort to attend this year. With equipment even. This typically happens of the Friday of the FF, correct?

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

It has shifted back and forth between Friday evening and Saturday midday. From 2003 forward:

Saturday Midday: Buffalo, Columbus, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Denver, Detroit

Friday Evening: Boston (2004) & DC (2009)

Rink availability has often been the determining factor. Note also that for the past several years the FF has held the Skills Contest and Hobey Baker ceremony on Friday evenings. That doesn't necessarily take Friday evening off the table, but conflicting with those events is something of a negative.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

I played at Roseville all summer and the ice was always in good shape.

St. Thomas Academy has really good ice all year round. Outside of Mariucci's it's probably the best sheet I've played on a consistent basis. It also has the added allure of being a D-III rink, as the U of St. Thomas plays there, too. And it's a really easy, quick drive from St. Paul to the rink.

Most of the more urban rinks don't have great ice during the spring and summer, in my experience. Though I've never played at Roseville's rink, only done some open skating there while teaching a friend to skate.

That could be an early frontrunner. While not walking distance to the X, in sounds otherwise analogous to MSOE in Milwaukee. (where we played in 2006)

I'm sure there's no way the John Rose Oval is open in April. But that could have been very cool -- the first ever outdoor Posters' Game!

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

I'm in and will check with the lad to see if he's interested.
STA is very good and pretty central.
The Collieseum takes its ice out after the HS regionals or when the DII seasons end, IIRC. They start horse shows there in the spring.
Drake is the worst arena in the state.
Superrink is a great option.
I wouldn't go to Phalen.....and not sure if they keep their ice into April - most of the Ramsey County rinks take their ice out in late March or April. The Highland North sheet is an excpetion and easy to get to from either downtown
Inver Grove Heights is another great facility and easy to get to as well
Augsgurg isn't bad but the parking around there is horrible.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

You know how I know you're going senile in your old age?

Considering the time I've spent in Ramsey County rinks the Augsburg rink isn't too bad. Hell, it might be the most aesthetically pleasing building on that campus! ;)

I'm planning to take off work the Friday of the FF.... :)

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

How about Braemar in Edina, Aldrich in Maplewood, Bielenberg in Woodbury, or Wakota in South St. Paul? Braemar, Aldrich, and Wakota are classics, some of the oldest arenas around.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

Bielenberg http://www.ci.woodbury.mn.us/parks/bscrinks.html which is year-round:
Ice Rental Fees
$200 per hour plus tax
$145 per hour plus tax (after 10 p.m.)
$150 per hour plus tax (summer rate)

Braemar's price depends on time... Roughly $135-185 per hour, http://www.rinkfinder.com/page/show/135370-braemar-arena

Wakota http://www.southstpaul.org/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={6265D562-EE37-4E02-A241-EE56F95268D0} Doesn't list prices.

Another one that's nice is the Richfield Arena.

Aldrich doesn't appear to have ice in April
