2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

I'll tell you exactly how. 20 years of steady, very competent front office management, to cover up for drafting poorly for about a decade. Jimmy Devellano has been there since Ilitch bought the club in the early 80's, and Ken Howard has been with the Wings' front office for two decades. People that want to whine about the Wings need to take a look inside their own front offices before they start running their lips. It's funny how 5 years into the cap era, the Wings haven't fallen off the face of the earth, unlike most other teams at the top at that time of the strike. Gee, I wonder how that happens...

I dont think there is even an argument that the Red Wings have the best front office in pro sports.

Well, that's how they're in contention year in and year out, plain and simple. It's the same reason the Pats are as successful in the NFL, and the Lakers in the NBA.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

(psst....Ken Holland, not Howard. You've been spending too much time with the Tigers where the backstop has a dad in the front office. ;) )

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

Can't wait for tonight's game...should be a doozy.

I hate Detroit. But, I picked them to win the whole thing in my pool so I wouldnt mind if they won. My heart definitely says San Jose tho.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

Sharks need to win so the west finals will be a battle of the chokers. :)

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

I'm going to miss the opportunity to see hockey in Atlanta (if I'm ever able to get to Atlanta for a vacation).

With everything I've read in the last couple days, ATL is the team WPG gets. Can't they do like the minor leagues and "suspend" the franchise, but keep it there dormant until a suitable owner is found? ;)

What's absolutely ridiculous about this, if true, is that Ken Campbell of THN reports that it would be Detroit, and not Nashville, that would move East. How the eff would that work? I want Nashville in the East, and it makes way too much sense..which is probably why it will not happen.

Not changing your vacation plans to Winnipeg, eh? :D

I think Columbus actually would make the most sense, as far as swapping equivalent teams. The reason they are saying Detroit is because it has long been rumored that Mike Illitch has an 'in' with the league office to move Detroit east in the event an eastern team moves into western conference territory. Personally, I've scoffed at the idea for ages, but I don't know maybe it is true.

Obviously, Nashville is the best geographic fit - just slide them into the southeast.

Nope. Then again, maybe I shouldn't have let Bryzgalov be my travel agent. ;)

I understand the complaint about the Wings being a rare Eastern time zone team playing a majority of games in the Central, Mountain, and Pacific time zones. But I would rather that Toronto (and Buffalo to compliment them) slide West to make it a 50/50 split of Original Six teams in the East and West.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

Someone in the Red Wings PR dept has WAY too much time on their hands. This gem was in their game notes for tonight:

*Actor Emilio Estevez turns 49 today. The Red Wings are 27-15-1 on primary Breakfast Club cast members' birthdays since the film was released theatrically on Feb. 15, 1985."

Nashville or Columbus would makes sense. Detroit would make the Northeast top heavy, but I would love the renewed rivalry with Toronto.
