Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

So, uh...was that you behind Howard last night in the teal and white colored sweater?

Sadly, no. Upper deck halfway up about even with the goal line that Howard defended twice.

When are you guys going to stop singing a song written by a bay area band whose lead singer has Sharks season tickets where the lyrics are about the guy taking a train anywhere to get the hell away from Detroit? :p

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

Why the loathing for the Bruins? I mean, they haven't won anything in almost 40 years so why the hatred?

Because nothing says great hockey fans like starting a "Yankees Suck" chant. (seriously, this happened every single game I ever went to in Boston)

I don't mind the Bruins - only NHL games I've been to were at the Fleetcenter/TD Garden/whatever it's called now. But Boston sports fans are god awful.

Still decent seats. :)

Oh, and we'll stop singing Thursday. :p

Hm. Odd. I've been to 9 games at the Garden this year, 3 last year...and haven't heard anything like that. Were the Sox playing the Yankees when you went? That would make a little sense anyways.

The last time I went to a Bruins game where that was chanted was in 2002... But I hate those idiots.... It's a GD hockey game for crying out loud!

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

They were chanting "Yankees suck" in Montreal, too.

Of course, they might have meant a different kind of Yankee...

Yeah. "Yankees Suck" really went out of style after 2004 anyways. I will admit though, fans have reverted back to the sheer insanity that once gripped this region in regards to the Bruins. In terms of over-reacting to wins, and blind hatred for who we're playing in the playoffs (granted, our past two opponents DID have some history with us)...it's been eerily reminiscent of previous Sox post-season runs.

The two things that concern me most are (obviously) Bergy's concussion/Seguin stepping up and (slightly less obviously) our power play. It started to come alive towards the end of the Philly series, but man...we've gotta start getting some consistency out of that unit or the only way we go to the Finals is if good seats are still available.

Would've been 2006 at least, since that was when I was still out East. Between that, the "life-long Patriots fans" who magically appeared circa 2002, WEEI idiocy, and all the pink-hat-wearing Red Sox fans...Boston sports teams can go 0-for-the-milinnium as far as I'm concerend.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

The "Yankees Suck" chant is wrong anyway. It's "Yankees Choke" :D

One great thing if the B's win it all will be Felger and all those idiots who called talk radio and declared them dead when they were down 0-2 to Montreal eating crow. Felger has been down on them (especially Thomas and Chara) all season. Knowing him though, even if they do win he'll just start griping that they'll never win again next year...

If the Bruins lose, that means Tampa Bay is in the Finals so not only will good seats be available, they'll also be dirt cheap. Nosebleeds for the Stanley Cup Finals in Boston would crack the $200 plateau.

I hate those morons. I ask them to name 3 Wide Receivers before 2000...hell, asking them to name the QB sometimes stumps them. It's awful, and gives the true fans a bad name.

Pink hats are terrible too, but as baseball's my 3rd sport, it doesn't bother me AS much.

Hey, I'm almost satisfied as a Boston sports fan. If the Sox never win again...it's okay. I always have 2004 and 2007. The Pats dynasty was a blast to be a part of. I'm content there too. I don't care nearly as much about the Celtics, but I watched them in 2008, so that's cool.

I just need a Bruins win. That's the one I've been waiting for. If they win, you'll never hear another peep out of me again. I can die a happy Boston sports fan then. :)

Hockey fans in general are just...better. Yes, I hate the morons that do nothing but scream "SHOOT IT!" on the Power Play. I do. But guess what? For the most part, they are new hockey fans. And we need more hockey fans. They'll learn. Hell, I educated a few in my section several times this year. Once I explained why it DIDN'T make sense to blast a shot into the shin pads, and pass it around to get an open shot down low, they stopped with that nonsense. :)

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

I'd rather take 2 hours of SHOOT IT than 4 hours of YANKEES SUCK.*

*The truth of that statement notwithstanding. :p

I yell something a little different in those situations... Either "SQUARE BUTTON!!!" or, in honor of a good Northeastern Alum, "CRASH THE NET!!!!!!!!"

I can say I am a lifelong Pats fan, but I wasn't huge into the sports scene until I got to college in 2000 so I can say that I can't name too many either. I went through a bandwagon phase in middle school and came back for good around when Bledsoe was drafted. I became a diehard in 2000.

WEEI is crap and always will be. I can't believe that they simulcast their show on NESN in the morning. It is painful to listen to. The sports hub, 98.5, is the sports station to listen to. They have a great mix of knowledge, idiocy, and self-depreciation minus all of the politics. No decent Boston sports fan would listen to them on the radio any more.

I haven't listened to EEI in years, and I feel that I'm better off for it. I get nitwits at work who ask about what Ordway or Callahan said, or if I'd heard Belichick on EEI. I just laugh and tell them I'd be better off listening to the static. I listen to Sports Hub, which at the very least is entertaining during my morning commute. It's better than a bunch of middle-aged guys complaining about Obama in-between non-issues just to fill air time.

As far as the rest of the fans go; yeah...a lot of them are embarrassing. The Patriots fans are dumb, Sox fans are dumber, and I don't even bother with the Celtics. That's why I'm enjoying this particular Bruins run as much as I can; because I know if we win it all, the Black & Gold will soon fade to Pink...and it'll all start over again

Do we get bonus points for obscurity? Hassan Graham, Will Moore, and Tony Gaiter (was he before 2000?)

Now, for the QB, are you referring to Michael Bishop? Or is it Scott Zolak?

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

I hope san jose blows this 3-0 lead so boston’s travesty from last year will be yesterdays news compared to this.

..but detriot in the finals scares me as a boston fan. They dominated us this season. Badly. This club still has it, and I don’t know how.

I'd accept all of those as answers. :p

I'm fine with casual fans becoming diehards. That's completely different than a bandwagon fan. I consider myself a casual Celts fan. I consider myself more than a casual, but not quite a diehard Sox fan. I keep up with the team, but don't watch many games until the end of the year...the season's just too long.

I hate the unintelligent bandwagon fans of the Bruins, I really do. But I also know that some of those fans WILL become diehards. The bottom line is the vast majority of sports fans are not hockey fans. Gaining more interest in the best sport ever is always a good thing. I LOVE that people around New England are talking about the Bruins again. Sure, it's a bit painful to listen to people who have no clue what they are talking about (Dan Shaughnessy, I'm looking at you!). But in the long run, it's a good thing. More exposure for the sport is great. Casual fans helping to fill the Garden is great. Would I prefer if the 17565 were all diehard hockey geniuses? Of course! But that's not feasible.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs II: Welcome to Smashville

I grew up in Maine for 21 years of my life and am a die-hard fan for the Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins. The Celtics...eh. Who really cares about basketball. This is the first time since I was 8 Boston has been to the Conf. Finals, so Im going to enjoy it. This team is really fun to watch as a fan of the team.

The Patriots, well they werent much of a franchise before 2000 except for the god awful SB against the Bears (I was two) and the Packers SB loss with Bledsoe, Martin et al.

Red Sox, well my childhood memories go back to watching the games with my grandmother who sadly never got to see the Sox win it. Those memories also include watching roller derby and the WW(E)F. I choose to block out some of those "sports" memories though. :p

Long story short, I hate dumb bandwagon fans that are not intelligent, and just yell stuff like "Hit him in the grill."

I'll tell you exactly how. 20 years of steady, very competent front office management, to cover up for drafting poorly for about a decade. Jimmy Devellano has been there since Ilitch bought the club in the early 80's, and Ken Howard has been with the Wings' front office for two decades. People that want to whine about the Wings need to take a look inside their own front offices before they start running their lips. It's funny how 5 years into the cap era, the Wings haven't fallen off the face of the earth, unlike most other teams at the top at that time of the strike. Gee, I wonder how that happens...
