2011 Minnesota Twins: Yoshi, Pavario, and Big Jim's Quest for 600

Re: 2011 Minnesota Twins: Yoshi, Pavario, and Big Jim's Quest for 600

I heard you! Why'd you do that? It was mean.:p

What do you expect,
When you raise up a young boy's hopes,
And then just crush 'em like so many paper beer cups,
Year after year after year. (After year, after year, after year, after year . . . )

:p

ESPN says Kubel & Thome have been claimed on waivers.

Re: 2011 Minnesota Twins: Yoshi, Pavario, and Big Jim's Quest for 600

That's not a surprise. Just depends who claimed them and if they want to make a deal.
Except the White Sux probably claimed them both just to block the Indians...so maybe we can make a deal for one, but no way the Sox deal for both. Plus, I would rather not see Kubel playing for the White Sox, he's going to kill the Twins if he plays for them. Especially if Kubel can be a type A free agent.

Strong rumors that the Sux did claim Thome

Kubel is a Type B right now according to mlbtraderumors.com He's the highest rated Type B OF/1B/DH so there is still a chance he gets bumped to Type A.

I saw last night on Tweeter that he had a decent chance to become a type A. Hopefully they pull him back and he has a good end to the season. I'd rather get the draft pick at this point.

So how exactly does the trade waiver work - if a team claims player X when placed on waivers, does that open some exclusive window for trade negotiations, or what (as opposed to the July 31 deadline where teams can trade players to any team)?

And if a player is placed on waivers and nobody claims him, that allows the team to trade him to anybody, right?

Or do I have this all wrong?

I miss the Terry Ryan days. He seems 5x smarter than Bill Smith. What is one good move by him?

If claimed on waivers, there are 3 options.

1. 48 hours to work out a trade with the team who claimed the player.

2. Let the team take the player with nothing in return (the Blue Jays did this to the White Sox to get out from under Alex Rios' contract)

3. The team which placed the player on waivers can pull them back, player cannot be traded for the rest of the season.

If a player goes unclaimed, they can be traded to any team in the league after clearing waivers.

He traded Delmon Young for a bag of balls and the infamous PTBNL (Oct 15th deadline for that btw).

Re: 2011 Minnesota Twins: Yoshi, Pavario, and Big Jim's Quest for 600

Thome to Cleveland. I hope the Twins can resign him at the end of the year. He's a great character guy, who isn't too shabby as a DH.

The team's only shot at getting anything for that fat sack of crap was to trade him last season - but that wouldn't have made much sense at the time given his age and the belief he was having a breakout season (as opposed to being a one-hit wonder). The Garza/Bartlett trade is officially a colossal failure. Not Herschel Walker-level bad, but still a steaming pile of ****. Between that and the Santana trade, this team's front office has done a great job of ****ing itself in the ***. You know your trade sucks when you would have been better off letting the players walk and taking the compensatory draft picks.

Re: 2011 Minnesota Twins: Yoshi, Pavario, and Big Jim's Quest for 600

Smith and Gardy both need to go imho.
The manager is probably the most minor factor in the overall performance of the team. If the front office provides him with ineffective/****ty players, what exactly is he supposed to do lineup-wise to compensate for that?

Between the awful bullpen, the massive amount of time lost to injury by key players, and the fact that Cuddyer has been the only truly reliable / decent performer this season, it's really not surprising that the year has been an unmitigated disaster. Fortunately, if the team does a salary dump and replaces the outgoing players with a couple really good SP's to fill the top of the rotation, that can at least partially offset the ****ty offense (Reusse wrote a column advocating this within the past few days, and I agree with him).

Look, I don't disagree that Smith has been a failure and I said he needs to go, but imho a major proble is that the team is mentally soft and that starts with Gardy.
