2011 Cycling thread.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

New rules for the media announced after Sunday's NASCAR-like incident. Check the live comments on letour.fr for more details.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Wow OPL and Gilbert just crushed the peloton on a Cat 4! Great racing! Doubt it stays away, but fun stuff!

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Greipel actually beat Cav in a straight up head to head sprint today. I think Cav lost because he was forced to go a little early, but Greipel has got to be pretty happy.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Well it didn't stay away, but as they said on Eurosport, tremendous entertainment!

Gorilla Greipel ahead of Cav and Rojas.

According to Phil, post stage, it was a plan the whole day to go hard on the climb to isolate Cav. He knew that he'd have to do much of it himself and when he got to the top he looked around and saw most people at their limit and said I knew that I could never win the stage so why not attack.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

You gotta love those guys who'll give it a shot, despite their chances of not necessarily succeeding. But at least they took a shot, and went for something.

As opposed to someone like Levi, who's too afraid of losing his 9th overall to take a chance at maybe winning the whole thing. You can say that about pretty much any of the other GC contenders, except for Contador. At least he'll go for it, even if he doesn't make it.

I agree rufus. In my opinion that kind of started with he who shall not be named rise in 1999. I recall a stage, maybe when Ulle won, like stage 19 or 20 through rolling slightly hilly terrain and Vireque had the entire Festina team on the attack, trying to set something up. He didn't care if he blew but he wanted to try something. Also I still remember Pantani's attack that cracked Armstrong on the Joux Plane. He was willing to risk everything and almost succeeded.

I don't know the first thing about Cycling and came here rather than look up what happened. What was that car even doing in that position? And also, it looked intentional to me...

The car was part of the Tour Caravan, in this case, it was a French TV car covering the race. It was not following the rules of the Tour, and had already once ignored the protocol. In this exact case, the car was trying to pass the riders on a decent and as the driver accelerated to pass, with the two drivers side wheels on the dirt, the driver looked up and discovered there was a tree right on the side of the road that would have hit the car if the driver continued on the same line. In short the driver had 3 options, hit the tree and likely take out the riders anyway, break, or swerve. Clearly they chose option 3.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Cav takes the green it will be interesting to see how many points Gilbert picks up in the Pyrenees and the Alps, probably will depend a lot on the placement of the enroute sprint. Another good sprint from Greipel but the key today was Renshaw didn't get dropped.

I assume the racing starts in earnest tomorrow for the GC we will see how bad Contador's knee is ;) I expect a group of 12-20 at the start of Luz-Ardiden and then we will see who can stay with AC. If he doesn't attack I suspect the knee is really hurting.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

What's up with Kreuziger this year? Did he fall early and I missed it or is he just not in good form this year?

It seems like every day he's finishing behind the main pack.

The car was a French TV media car (channels 2 and 3), so probably trying to get some video of the riders. From the looks of it, there was a tree sticking out very close to the road. The car had a choice of the riders or the tree (or the brakes and subsequently an associate director, technically), and it chose the riders. :( I believe it was trying to pass the riders and get in front of them for another TV angle.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Based upon the cycling news live updates it sounds like maybe the Schlecks are going to try to isolate AC and maybe make a move to really put some time on him?

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

AC currently has more domestiques in the front than Schlecks. I've seen Porte, CAS, Navarro, and I think Hernandez. Anyway, Roman K is making a showing today. T. Martin is cracked as is Gesink.

But my real question is this: Kloeden has recovered, somewhat, from his most recent exploration of the pavement and is now back in the group. Can Bottle actually help him? I mean can he ride in front of Kloeden or can he only do that if he is behind someone else?

Samu attacked on the decent of the Tourmalet and starts the last climb with about 20 sec...does that count?

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Samu gain some time with the stage win ahead of Jelle Vanadert...then a small gap to F. Schleck...then bigger gap to Basso, Evans, A. Schleck...small gap to Cunego...14 seconds to AC. Then THOMAS VOECKLER!

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

I wonder how banged up Contador was looked like Andy wasn't too strong today and I don't put a whole lot a faith in Frank as an overall winner, though I thought the same about Sastre as well, so today would have been a day for an attack if he was feeling well.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Curious lead-out pack for a stage with a HC... Hushovd and Petacchi (plus a few others)... Green jersey, mayhaps? Cavendish is far ahead in that, though...

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Andreas Kloden has abandoned the Tour.

Another one bites the dust for the Shack. Down to just five riders now..
