Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

The Bowl Conference tie ins is where they get screwed. How a #7 team in the BCS that travels relatively well gets a game they'll win by 50 against La Tech is a joke.

really? They struggle to fill their 32k stadium.

Since bowls are about money, it's a lot better to take OSU and Florida, since they will bring the size of BCC's stadium.

Eh, they've been averaging about 34k the last couple years. Didn't check back farther than that, though. I'd say they're more attractive to a bowl than Northwestern level programs at this point. Maybe they'll get lucky and the bowls will do some horse trading again.

Oops.

(Gawker is too stupid to make the article link-friendly, but you get the idea.)

There's a nice thread on the Vandal board which clearly puts that at tickets sold vs. attendance. Much like many of the bigger schools.

The only game where it's clear that they are selling out is no longer scheduled.

I guess I was under the impression they did get the 34K and sold their games out. I remember they traveled pretty well to DC for their game with VT as well as to Dallas this fall.

Penn State said they will donate their bowl proceeds (before or after expenses?) to Victim Outreach Programs

Humanitarian Bowl????

Gah I should've posted this earlier! I think it's a smart move. The players deserve to play and the athletic department deserves the punishment, which it will lose more than $1.5 million.

If USC has to sit home this weekend and all bowl season through no fault of any of the current players, their is no reason that OSU or PSU should be anywhere near a bowl game this season after what has happened on those campuses.

I'll give you OSU, but what did the current players at PSU do?

It is about punishing the institutions for their lack of oversight not about what happens to the players. You can't punish PSU because it's not fair to the players but at the same time punish USC when it's not fair to the players. All I want is consistancy.

At least Miami did the right thing and is turning down it's bowl bid.

Idaho Famous Potatos Bowl????

FYP.

And no, Penn State won't go to Boise. That's reserved for a MAC vs. WAC team....

Note- I say this fully by throwing a stone out of a glass house. Bronco Stadium may not really fill up, but I can assure you that the Kibbe Dome is pathetic in comparison. So....

Not that I've been there in a LOOOOOOONG time for a FB game. Last time I saw one, Idaho beat BCC, back in '89.

Well, those were big time matchups that they had months to plan for. Plus, I would suspect that most people who hate the BCS have become bit of a Boise fan by associating them with all of the arguments that point to just how stupid and a cash grab than what it is about the games. Plus, honestly, other than Alfablue, who hates em because he's a Idaho fan, there's not a whole lot of people who hate Boise. They're that loveable underdog that's hard to not want them to win as long as you're a neutral fan of the teams in the game. Some of those attendance numbers may simply be inflated by the locals in the area who opted to buy a BSU sweater at a Walmart that week, if ya catch my drift.

Consistency is the key with all of this, and I agree it should be vital when the NC$$ rules on infractions. It's unfortunate the players should have to suffer, as you pointed out, due to how things were ruled at USC, but regardless the players don't deserve to be punished.

I agree attendance numbers may have been inflated to a degree, but I would say a bowl could get 10,000 to 15,000 loyal BSU season ticket holders, etc. I'm not saying they'll travel like OSU, UNL, Iowa, etc, but I'd think they'd travel well enough to play in a bigger game somewhere against another team who travels well. The setback is the conference tie ins that bowls have. It has to be.

It's a good counter to the couple of bowls in the Big Ten lineup that might have considered passing them by just because they don't want Penn State's name associated with their sponsor for 3 hours.

I don't think you can rip the NCAA yet (though I don't doubt that you'll be able to when it is all said and done), since the NCAA hasn't finished its investigation on Penn St. You can't expect the NCAA to hand out santions before concluding an investigation. It is a valid argument to rip Penn St. for not turning down the bowl game, like Miami did.
