The hard part with the playoff system, is you lose the histroy of the bowls, which are a huge part of college football. The BCS is nothing more than a fat fisted money grab. If it was all about finding the best two teams and having them settle it on the field, there would be a sixteen team playoff.
Oh, I'm sure they'll figure out that there would be plenty of money to be had between both teams to play an annual game between each other. As per SEC rules, Kansas could be one of their allotted cupcakes to eat to fatten up their schedule.![]()
You don't lose them though. The teams not in the playoff are free to go to a bowl game. The hard part with the playoff system, is you lose the histroy of the bowls, which are a huge part of college football.

And I'm sure Tostitos/FedEx/Whoever would be happy to sponsor a quarter- or semi-final game...You don't lose them though. The teams not in the playoff are free to go to a bowl game.
Quick, tell me who won the Orange Bowl last year.
I used to worry about this, but the history of the bowls has already largely been thrown out the window with the BCS system. The Rose Bowl's connection to the Pac 12 and Big Ten was significantly reduced the first time a team from elsewhere went to the Rose Bowl and has been further undermined each subsequent time this has happened. I'm not that worried now about if the bowls go under or are somehow worked into a playoff system or whatever. The hard part with the playoff system, is you lose the histroy of the bowls, which are a huge part of college football.

Wow, Lynah wrote the same thing I didStanford beat Virginia Tech 40-12.
Though I agree fully with your point.
Rats - I thought I actually made a point someone agreed with. Still dreaming....Wow, Lynah wrote the same thing I did![]()

We can dream, but there's no way this gets dialed back to the old bowl system. I used to say I'd like to see that, but I realize that it isn't happening. A playoff is a more viable possibility to get rid of the BCS, which is the worst of both possible systems. No reason we couldn't go back though. This could just be remembered as an unfortunate phase, like steroids, astroturf and the designated hitter.
Didn't even know about that one. Not surprised though.Like last year's "first non-AQ ranked in the top X for the years 201X to 201Y gets in the Rose Bowl if the Pac10 champ is in the NC" awesome rule.
I agree we will not go back. That doesn't stop me from wishing for it. See also: girls wearing poodle skirts. We can dream, but there's no way this gets dialed back to the old bowl system. For me, I've been watching the Hawkeyes since age 3, but really understanding that the goal every year is to win the Big Ten and get to Pasadena at about age 8. Really I know nothing different then wanting the team to make the Rose Bowl. With the caveat that I was pretty young when the BCS first came about, I have utterly no desire to see college football go back to the bowl system. And I hate the BCS.
