Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

And you can make the big bowls mean something again. Quick, tell me who won the Orange Bowl last year. The Fiesta Bowl two years ago.

Integrate (I know that's a foreign concept in the SEC) the major bowls into a playoff system. Rotate the championship just as you do now. For example, the semi-finals would be the Fiesta Bowl and the Orange Bowl with the Sugar Bowl hosting the title game. Rotate it next year. Rotate in the Rose if they want, otherwise they can maintain their Integer/Pac-12 tradition (assuming neither is in the BCS).

There are ways to make it work. There are a handful of very powerful people who don't want it to work that will prevent it from happening.

Integrate the bowls, yes. Allow any bowl that wins a bid to be a playoff host to host the game they are assigned as that bowl.

Any bowl that does not wish to bid (or does not win a bid) can be played as normal (assuming it wins NCAA sanction), but not may not select any team which is destined for the playoffs.

The hard part with the playoff system, is you lose the histroy of the bowls, which are a huge part of college football.

History of the bowls ain't worth diddly to the current day dollar. And they'll still make money hand over fist with a sixteen team playoff with the first round at the higher ranked school's stadium or perhaps the nearest NFL stadium that just happens to be available that weekend.

I agree we will not go back. That doesn't stop me from wishing for it. See also: girls wearing poodle skirts.

In other news, the denial on Finebaum is as wonderful as one would expect.
We could even go way back to pre-mid 60s, determine the National Champion right after the regular season and the bowls are truly glorified exhibitions.

Back when the Hawkeyes should've been named National Champions.....;)

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

Let's see. The BCS schools want to keep things the way they are so it doesn't "take away from the regular season" yet they have no problems with a team like Alabama with 1 loss being eligible for the NC game even though that takes away from the value of the original matchup with LSU IN ALABAMA...

And that's how Alabama winds up claiming about 10 fake national championships. :)

They only recognize championships that schools already claim, they don't give any additional titles. They did used to have stricter standards for recognizing titles that required either selection by a "trusted" selector (i.e. the AP or UPI polls and a couple for pre-1936 seasons) or recognition by at least, I think, 33% of all selectors. Under this system there were many titles that schools claimed that the CFBDW did not recognize, for example, they only recognized 7 of the 11 that Michigan claim. They recently liberalized their recognition so now most of what schools claim are recognized. Some of those that are really a stretch still aren't recognized, an example of this is that they still only recognize 4 of the 6 titles that Michigan State claims.

JoePa really ruined Finebaum's show yesterday. It was only about 50% SEC/NCAA conspiracy against Alabama, and 50% Penn State talk. I tune in to hear people take insignificant things way too seriously, not take significant things not serious enough.

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

And in "Totally sliding in under the radar" news, Oregon released all their information on their dealing with paying Lyles for recruiting information today.

Other schools are likely pawing through for any NCAA violations that they could claim that were eventually coming out now anyway.

Today is the day for every school in the country with dirty laundry to release it.

"You paid who, how much???? You didn't rape any 10 year olds, right? Ok, good, don't do that again. Back to the matter at hand..."

Between JoPa and Paul pimping that inbred rivalry movie we have been deprived of one of the great weeks of listener denial and rationalization in history. Bad timing.

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

So, uh, why'd the other thread get closed?

You've got a better chance of seeing (insert random unlikely football event here) than getting whoever mods these boards to explain something. It wasn't any worse than the political trolling around here.

I started a new thread. I assume it was closed because it got slightly off topic near the end. If Board closes that thread too, I think we can interpret that as meaning TPTB would rather us not talk about it on their forum...
