2011-2012: WCHA Predictions - Summer Edition

Way to prove your jealousy, Skeeterman. "What they think is a superconference"? Yeah, having all 6 teams finish in the top 15 in the rankings last year, along with 17 National Championships, is definitely going to be an overrated conference. God, you guys can't just get over that we didn't want you.

Glad you got that off your chest?

I love the "we" like you had a vote.

For 20 years, I watched the now lowly Michigan Tech beat up on most of the "super conference." Dynasties regularly come and go in college hockey and the NCHC and B1G are likely to put an end to some when these new leagues establish their own cellar dwellers. TV contracts and $$ don't make a great grass-roots hockey culture and I expect the new WCHA to spawn tough teams that give both new leagues a run for their money in the Frozen Four.

Every kid in Houghton, Marquette and the Soo plays little league hockey. You can't say the same about Denver, Grand Forks or Madison.

You're right, they didn't want us. But I've got news for you bucko... they didn't want you either.

Haha. I'll give you Denver and Madison...but you've obviously never been to GF if you think every kid doesn't play hockey. There's an outdoor hockey rink every 4 blocks in GF, and they are always packed.

Oh, good job! 17 combined titles in that new conference and you guys have how many? Half a dozen? No. Three? Nope. Oh yeah, that's right! You have 1. Way to base your logic off of the other NCHC team's success. I go back to my post in the SCSU thread. Had UMD not won the championship this year, I wouldn't be one bit surprised if they were on the outside looking into the NCHC just like SCSU was. Please spare us the arrogance as if tDogs are soooooooo much better than SCSU.

Ok I agree with everything you said up to the part "Please spare us the arrogance as if tDogs are soooooooo much better than SCSU" , you're joking right? Duluth is WAY better than SCSU, hands down. Look at the records, look at the players. Look at the projections for this season. If you are able to say that, then you should EASILY be able to say that the Gophers should have been in that postion then. Oh wait...the gophers got into the "super conference" off their PAST not their recent play. Dont try and tell me that had UMD not won the national championship that they would have been considered "equals" to SCSU. Duluth were contender going into the season, had a good season, and won. Had they won or lost that game, they still had a great season. When was the last time SCSU had a good season?

Dangler,

Courtesy of MSUMaverickFan

Average WCHA finish since 2000

Denver - 3
North Dakota - 3.1
Minnesota - 3.7
Colorado College - 3.8
Wisconsin - 4.5
St. Cloud - 4.9
Minnesota-Duluth - 6.6
---------------------
Minnesota State - 6.9
Alaska Anchorage - 8.6
Michigan Tech - 9

With that being said. UMD has a title. SCSU does not. But it is obvious which team has been more consistent in the last 10 years. This does not mean that will continue in the future.

Really? You can't be this out of touch?

This was a serious question, not sarcastic. They have had good seasons, i get it, i know that, but when was the last time that they were REALLY contenders? Theyve only one won game in the NCAAS sincce 05-06...

How about two years ago when SCSU went into a game with an opponent they were 3-2-0 against during the regular season and lost to go to the F4? We went .500 with the eventual runner-up, we just lost the WRONG playoff game. And you bring up records... SCSU has a winning record against tUMD and a better WCHA record over the last decade, so try that one again. And what do projections matter? You seem to forget that SCSU was projected higher than tUMD going into last season, and that points out that projections mean nothing. Players? Duluth doesn't get bigger recruits than St. Cloud anymore, face facts. A Faulk-less, Fontaine-less and only half a Connolly Duluth squad... don't be shocked if SCSU has a better year this coming year.

If you wanna talk history, then yeah, going into last year tUMD had a huge advantage, they had F4's and Hobey Bakers. They also had a 45-year head start, and are still behind in qualifying for NCAAs. Face it, SCSU has been consistently better for the last ten years, Duluth's just gone on better runs during their good years, and congratulations, they deserve to be recognized for that. But they're not a clear-cut better team than SCSU in 2011, and that's what we're talking about, right?

Ummm... they've only won one game (that's won one, not one won) game in the NCAAs since man crawled out of a cave

Honestly dude, you need to stop. SCSU has not had the postseason success but they have been **** close to the Macnaughton a couple times and they had how many tournament appearances where they just couldn't find a way to win in the opening round until a couple years ago obviously. UMD has it's Hobeys and Frozen Fours and now a natl championship and blah blah blah. I don't think that makes them so much better then SCSU. You are blind if you don't think SCSU hasn't had a good season any time in the recent past.

Also, this discussion has nothing to do with the Gophers but since you brought them up....
It was a known fact that once Penn St announced they would add a D1 hockey program, the BTHC was pretty much inevitable. The Gophers didn't "get into" a conference based on anything from the past or present. The B1G clearly stated that once there were 6 teams from the conference in D1 hockey, there would be a conference formed. But you can keep kidding yourself in thinking that the Gophers tried to put themselves in a "super conference" as you call it. That term didn't really come up until sue and DU decided to puff their chests out and invite a couple buddies to a new party which UMD was fortunate enough to get invited to.

Everyone else at the top of the projection board finished about where they should have, right?...so projections mean a little. I agree that they dont mean anything, and that anything can happen. However, I'd say that projections USUALLY project to be right.

So 8 out of 10 tries we finish ahead of your title team last year? Awesome.
