2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

I'm not sure if playing time was the reason Dell left (it could very well be a variety of different things). All I had heard (from a couple of coaches in the league, none of which are named Dave Hakstol) was that Gothberg was likely going to get the majority of the starts.
He just got married as well so maybe that was a factor? Who knows...

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

The ECHL isn't quite the hockey career graveyard that many people make it out to be, specifically for goalies. The following goalies in the 2012 NHL Playoffs played in the ECHL: Jonathan Quick, Tim Thomas, Mike Smith, Joey MacDonald, Johan Hedberg, Martin Biron, Alex Auld, Jason Labarbera, Thomas Greiss, Jaroslav Halak, Braden Holtby, Michael Neuvirth, Dany Sabourin, and Thomas Vokoun.

That's a pretty big list and just from the teams who made the playoffs.

Were they undrafted free agents when they went to the E?

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Just for the record...that is not what I have heard. I did state that it was rumor, but you managed to leave that out of my quote. Thanks.

Also, I'm curious who from North Dakota said that Dell would have been starting goaltender next season?

There is some that seems to think that a former All-American wouldn't be playing as much this season because of the two in coming goalies this year.
We will never know now... I disagree because last season there were times when Eids had better numbers and Hak stuck with Dell. Dell was also injured last season as well and missed two weeks to injury.

From what I have heard (aka rumor), the coaches were/are looking at Gothberg to carry the majority of the minutes this season. If that was the case, then Dell would have had to beat out Saunders for backup minutes.

Was that the rumor that was bouncing around Sioux Sports? The reason I ask is Hakstol doesn't just hand out playing time, it's earned... Shacker aka Pucknut 9 the one that posted that Dell was leaving has a very credible source that is close to the players on the UND hockey team and he said that his source wouldn't even give the reason that Dell was leaving...

Forgive me for butting in, but what coaching staff goes into a season expecting an unproven Freshman to get the majority of starts over an accomplished NCAA goaltender like Dell? That part of it just doesn't add up. How could something like that be decided upon before these players even start practice?

That's kind of what I am thinking as well....

Which is exactly were 3 of the last 4 gopher seasons can be found.

well, back when UND fans had some pride, the only thing that mattered was the National Championship, and you guys didn't win one, either. but, that's the old days when you guys had overage Canadians that could win something for you. now, you are just one season away from mid-major, and I expect you to fade away just like Tech did.

Yawn, stretch.

I was simply restating what I had heard from some coaches in the league...nothing more, nothing less. My guess is that coaches plan and prepare for things like this constantly. Would they have just given everything to Gothberg without a challenge from Saunders and Dell? Of course not, but the plan (again, from what I heard) was that Gothberg was expected to get the majority of the starts coming into the season. I'm sure the same is true for a guy like Schmaltz. My guess (just my opinion here) is that the coaches already have Schmaltz pegged for a spot in the lineup as well.

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Fair enough, just seems very odd to me. Almost as if everyone knew Dell was leaving in the first place.

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Also, with this news, the roster should be set for this upcoming season:

Forwards (16)
Danny Kristo
Corban Knight
Carter Rowney
Mark MacMillan
Michael Parks
Connor Gaarder
Stephane Pattyn
Brendan O'Donnell
Taylor Dickin
Rocco Grimaldi
Derek Rodwell
Colton St. Clair*
Drake Caggiula*
Bryn Chyzyk*
Coltyn Sanderson*
Mitch MacMillan** (coming in after Fall Semester)

Defensemen (8)
Nick Mattson
Dillon Simpson
Joe Gleason***
Derek Forbort
Andrew MacWilliam
Andrew Panzarella
Dan Senkbeil***
Jordan Schmaltz*

Goaltenders (3)
Tate Maris
Clarke Saunders**
Zane Gothberg*

* - Freshman
** - Transfer
*** - Can also play forward

Grimaldi is still a freshman, although it isn't likely to matter. Saunders is a transfer but is eligible to play without sitting out any time.

Correct. I suppose I should have put "incoming freshman." Grimaldi is my choice for Freshman/Rookie of the Year in conference.

It is also nice that both of our transfers get to play this year, although Mitch MacMillan will only be allowed to play in the 2nd half of the season.

Either way, I like our roster. We should have solid depth throughout the lineup, plenty of scoring, very good defense, and strong goaltending. While I think we probably finish just behind Minnesota due to having a more difficult conference schedule, I think North Dakota should be a strong favorite again at the Final Five, and I wouldn't be surprised if this team was playing for a championship in Pittsburgh in April.

I am interested in how St. Clair plays this year, he had plenty of opportunities to jump ship and play elsewhere but decided to stick it out. I just haven't heard much of his development over the past year. I agree with you on Grimaldi, as long as he is healthy he should be a beast on the ice. A mini beast anyhow...
