2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

what exactly is "recruiting coordinator"? hak must have been making the decisions on who they were recruiting/offering scholarships to, right?

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Dane Litke seems to be the most probable candidate given his resignation as Head Coach from the Janesville Jets on Wednesday. It seems like too much of a coincidence that he resigned the day before it was announced Eades contract wasn't being extended.
Don't we exceed our quota of "Danes" on the staff if this hire is made?

I think it's an interesting situation. First off, since Berry left we've had two assistants who were both forwards in college. Eades got assigned the role of coach of the defensemen.

The other assistant, Jackson, is tight with Hak. They attended UND together and are probably pretty good friends. If it came time to shake up the staff, or perhaps more likely, get a defensive assistant on board, Eades was certainly the one to go even though he is probably one of the most popular members of the UND hockey family of all time.

But Eades did exactly the right thing. He didn't (thus far) burn any bridges with Hakstol, or more importantly, UND. He said all the right things and departed with class. He knows there is still a chance the brass ring may come back around for him with UND at some point in the future, and he didn't want to screw it up.

What makes it kind of a headscratcher for me at least is it's not like we've struggled defensively the past few years.

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

The one thing with Eades that will be hard to replace is that he was really good at finding players. I am not talking about your top NHL draft pick type kids, anyone can see how good those kids are. Let's face it finding the players in the first place is a huge thing when building a team.

My money is on Brad Berry but my money would never have bet on Hak letting Eades go.

Seth Jones signs with Winterhawks

Sounds like we lost him. Not that losing a kid as a high profile as Jones is a huge surprise, but any guesses as to what exactly they are telling these kids at Ann Arbor?

Seth Jones never committed to UND so they never really lost him. He said that IF he chose the college route he would like to play at UND. No verbal or NLI.

Landing Seth Jones would have simply been a bonus for UND. It would have been nice to have him, but UND's defense is still good without him.

I'm aware of the situation, and our defense will likely be very strong regardless, but I would still consider him a loss. We're talking about one of the early frontrunners for the #1 overall pick next year indicating that were he to choose the NCAA route he would play at UND.

He didn't commit, and I appreciate that he didn't before making his decision. He handled the situation with as much class as possible all things considered.

Jones was pretty much destined for major juniors 2 years ago. Just a matter of where he went.

where is this jones being a frontrunner for #1 overall pick talk coming from? i only see it on sioux boards.

It's pretty common knowledge that Jones is a frontrunner for a very high pick. For example...

While not eligible for the NHL draft until 2013, the 6-3, 200-pound, Dallas-area defenseman – son of former NBA forward Ronald "Popeye" Jones – already is regarded as potentially one of the top two or three players in that field.

Now, that isn't to say he is the obvious #1 choice, but rather just potentially in the race for the top spot. There is a lot of hockey to be played between now and the 2013 draft.

right. might be worth keeping in mind that quote is from a portland article, marketing to portland hockey fans who might get excited about them saying "this kid might go #1 overall". like you said- lots of hockey to play.. but mackinnon is the clear #1 right now

If I had time I could go find dozens (if not more) of other articles saying the same thing, but at the end of the day it will depend on what happens in the next year+ to see if he winds up getting drafted that high.

Directly from NHL.com...

In 46 games with the USNTDP this season, Jones had five goals and 23 points. Many NHL scouts feel the 6-foot-3, 201-pound Jones will be selected among the top two picks in 2013.

Jones could be centerpiece of new prospects game

I think at this point it's safe for me to call the kid an "early frontrunner."

That might just have turned out fine for UND.

Its likely that if he came out that high...he wouldn't have lasted long. EJ was drafted #1, played for a year, did OK and left with hardly any impact on his program.

But I'm sure you all still enjoyed having EJ play as a Gopher. Even if it was only for a year.

While you are right, still would've been cool if Jones came to UND. Ah well.

Meh. I would have much rather seen that roster spot go to a kid who would have played 3-4 years in the "M" sweater.
I would have gotten more enjoyment from watching a player grow, and I think that player would have added more to the team; both in the long term as well as single season performance in the 3rd/4th year as compared to Johnson's 1st year.

I also have to express my shock to the Eades announcement.
I absolutely hated the guy ;) but I think he obviously does a terrific job.

I'm very curious to hear more about exactly why he will be parting ways with the Sioux hockey family, as well as to see where he ends up.
There are a few "big-time" or at least "realistically-aspiring-to-be-big-time" programs that could be looking for a head coach in 2013...CC, UNO, UCONN should they go to Hockey East...
And I think Eades would get some very serious looks from any of them.

My totally uninformed first guess is that he ends up at UNO and becomes front-runner for that gig when Blais decides to hang it up.

Eades was named Head Coach and GM of the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL today. Great for him!

At this stage I would think Eades next job is in the AHL NHL
No chance.

This is a huge demotion, but likely the only move he could make considering the circumstances.

Getting a head coaching gig in the USHL is something that any #2 assistant on any college coaching staff could get.

If he didn't see it coming, then a job is a job, and he has a year to find somthing better. Do you think he will be there more than a year?
