2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Well apparently Miles Koules has decommitted from UND to join Medicine Hat in the WHL. Just a bummer. The US Development Team seems to be having it's players avoid college, which is very unfortunate, especially since the three UND has lost in the last year have all signed their LOI..

LOI does not mean shiat these days it seems... oh well, we will be fine without him. These guys are young and do not understand what a commitment means. Makes a lot of sense if you see who he has been tweeting a bunch with lately...@Smatteau23. Makes you feel proud for the guys who do stick it out. Jones and the drama that he would bring with him if he would ever commit can stay the he77 out of UND's system as far as I am concerned.

It's just odd. I think the USNTDP is allowing these young men to feel above education. Granted, they are extremely gifted and some may be future NHL stars, but I feel as if they are instilling that a high school education isn't important if you're good at hockey, and if you never realize the importance of high school education, why go on with your education? It's unfortunate to see these guys go.

I agree that we will be fine without him, and overall I think he'll probably see more immediate ice time with Medicine Hat, but he has obvious talent (everyone on the USNTDP does), and 2-4 years down the line could have been a big part of our program.

It is what it is. I don't blame a kid for going a different route than he planned on, especially when it looked like Koules would probably get little ice time next season with how loaded we are at forward.

As for the animosity towards Jones, it doesn't make any sense. Jones has done this the right way, and has not committed until he makes up his decision. I would much rather a player wait until they are certain where they want to play and then commit, rather than commit to a college even when they still might want to play Major Junior. Given that, I would love to have Jones on this team, but it does not look likely that he will make his way to Grand Forks. In the end, I'm just glad he went about making his decision in a way that was open and honest. Hopefully, future recruits go about it the same way he did.

I agree Jones has handled his situation properly. Unlike Koules and others, he hasn't committed and then backed out. The way that I am reading this is that playing time is the biggest issue. There are very few open spots for incoming forwards, and they are probably not willing to risk sitting on the bench when they are nearly guaranteed ice time in major junior.

The Spirit Lake lawsuit against the NCAA was dismissed today. The judge said most of the claims were without merit, and that of those that had any merit, they would have to presented by UND. Basically he said Spirit Lake had no standing to sue NCAA.

So we may finally be putting it to rest?

Funny, the Gophers really haven't had the same problem. Maybe you're recruiting the wrong kids out of the USNTDP?

Just stop responding to him and he'll leave this thread alone. Keep responding and he'll keep replying to you. It's just much easier and quicker to just ignore him as he will then go away. He's the DaveK of the Gopher fanbase, he truly believes what he says no matter how wrong and misguided he is.

You said a similar statement on GPL. Your continuous chest thumping for all things Minnesota is astounding. Congratulations, Minnesota knows how to recruit Minnesota kids and keep them. Not that hard when Minnesota kids drink the college hockey kool-aid immediately after birth. You see, UND likes recruiting Minnesota kids but unlike Minnesota, we don't have a huge aversion to recruiting kids outside of the state of Minnesota.

Yeah, there is some risk on losing out but it is a reward when they do show up.

Exactly.

This is what he does to every thread he is in...

I thought my comment was pretty fair. It wasn't meant to be an insult or a knock on your program. UND has been hit especially hard by late decommits from NTDP players. Why have they been hit harder than say the Gophers? Here's another hint: Kristo, Nelson, and Forbort didn't decommit. Why is that?

USHL futures draft was yesterday. Potential Sioux recruit Mason Morelli (you may remember his grandfather Reg winning the MVP when the Sioux won the 1959 national title, or his dad Matt playing during the late 80's early 90's with Hakstol) was drafted 3rd overall by Fargo. Mason is from Minot, and wants to play for North Dakota. If he develops like many are thinking he could be a very good pickup in a couple of years. He just completed his sophomore year of high school.
