2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Great win for the catamounts. Nice bounce back effort. Next weekend will be a tough test against undefeated Merrimack.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Cat's looked much much better. Like they maybe able to win a game or two. The battled for pucks and although were still a step behind Minny for the most part had sticks and bodies in there knocking pucks away. McCarthy definitely adds something. Stalberg looked like he knew what was happening today. Friday he seemed a bit lost.

Time to take down another undefeated team next weekend.

Now that is much better performance. I was worried Snwbrdr was 100% right after that Friday game. Today they weren't fumbling the puck and were making tape to tape passes. They still had a few moments of Friday night hockey but overall excellent bounce back all around.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

You had to think the Hockey Gods were going to repeat last years game at DU. When Minn got that fluke to go up
3-1 things seem to be going Minnesota way. Then Rau has a pass blocked right back to himself to cut the lead to one goal.
Got to feel great about the fight Vermont showed to come back and then Madore came up huge several times in the
third to help save the game. That was probably the best game McCarthy has played for Vermont and also Stalburg and Brickley
stepped things up.

I think McCarthy played well but I think he must add an intangible element. Seems to inspire and make the players around him better. I heard him on the bench a lot last year. I'm sure he adds that element this year now that he is an upperclassman. Stalberg got his head right quickly. Like the response, I too was worried Snwbrdr was right.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

I was worried I was right also..... They looked so lost in the exhibition and Friday night it reminded me of last year but worse.... But I TAKE MY MEDICINE - I'm happy to be wrong today!

But what a turnaround in terms of offensive opportunities. Friday night they did not really even have more than a couple of decent looks at the net, Sunday the guys that are supposed to carry us (Stalberg, McCarthy, Brickley) did just that. All 5 goals between the three of them. Nice work. Stalberg looked pretty awesome at times.

And to stand up to the pressure and not fold after Minn drew within one, nice work, and shows some character in this young team. Next time I want to see them finish the 4 on 1 though, that would have relieved some pressure.

and how bout those two back door goals? We never score those, almost had a third also but missed high or wide. But that was extremely encouraging, a hard fought win and some smart hockey. Team D looked better overall, except for N. Bruneteau pass to the point late in the 3rd. Yikes, eat that next time rather than kick it out to their guy on the point...

Madore did make some great saves in the third, and they got a bit of puck luck to offset the bad luck (Brickley skate redirect goal being waived off, UVM D tipping the puck into the net, Rau getting has pass right back to him off our skate).

Now I'm encouraged about next weekend, this has to be a huge confidence boost for the team.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

After watching that abysmal four minute PP, I certainly did not expect that...

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Speaking of Bruneteau (Brett this time) did he ever return to the ice after the injury in the 1st period? Hope he's going to be all right.

Man, what a game! The way they were scoring in the 2nd, they looked like BC or UNH (not this year's UNH). A few of those were "highlight reel" goals. They showed great character when things weren't looking good, with Minnesota getting a fluky goal to go up 3-1. Great win.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Wasnt sure we were going to see any offense out of the boys.

Nice effort, and a good solid OOC win.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

congrats on the win today. i know its early- but where do you guys figure to finish in hockey east this year??

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

2 Players that showed the best together and made a few nice pass plays were Stalburg and Reynolds, would like to see them together for a game or two because they seemed to be on the same page.

Please keep them together coach they will get better with time.

Ok, only one college hockey game yesterday and UVM beats the Gophers --- and College Hockey News and USCHO have basically NOTHING on it. ***. Oh well. Check out the highlights here.. go full screen and enjoy.

Great game yesterday by the cats. Very exciting to watch. Brickley/McCarthy/White were on fire. Madore was shaky at first but stood tall when it counted. Minnesota's offense is loaded and they were deflecting pucks like crazy. Definitely couldn't fault him on some of the goals but he still doesn't appear to be playing as well as when he first broke on scene

Completely agree with you. His freshman campaign set the bar really high. The only goal I really blame him for was the first one. Way too deep in his net and wasn't square to the shot at all...not to mention it was taken from practically the blue line. The rest of Minny's goals were pretty filthy tips/deflections

I like this tidbit from HE weekly release

"Merrimack, who is the lone remaining undefeated team in Hockey East, has never been 5-0 since joining Hockey East"
