2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

On another topic can anyone tell me if progress has been made to raise funds to build a new hockey/basketball facility at UVM. In 2012 Gutterson just doen't measure up as a good D1 facility. Just look around the area, Plattsburgh, Middlebury, Norwich, and D1 Dartmouth all have very good facilities. With a modern 4,000-5,000 seat arena I think the A recruits would come out of the wood work to play at UVM because Burlington is a great small city and the distance to Canada. A few more recruits from BC wouldn't hurt either.

No, haven't heard a thing about that in a while now. Believe me, with what you're saying, you're preaching to the choir! I b!+ch about it on here almost weekly.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Not that it factored in the end results but the Refs last night were terrible and I dont just mean the dudes with the orange stripes.

There were so many missed offsides and icings for both teams, I see a lineman call offsides and he is about half way from the blueline
to the goalline. Must have some great vision to see from there. I watched the first goal on the UVM video recap and frooze it to prove
the first goal was offsides.

And half of the penalties called(again for both teams) were very weak.

Sad to say we get the same crew tonight.

I think Paliotta has had it up to here with HE 'touch' penalties. He's wasting his time in this league if he wants to learn to play it tough in the NHL. Look what happened to Matt Gilroy.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Good news. Sounds like Vazzano played reasonably well last night--kept us in the game and gave us a chance to win for a change. From here on out, I don't see any reason for Madore to make any more starts, unless Vazzano tires toward the end of the season and just needs a little 1-game spell.

I agree. Way too many clean hip-to-hip checks along the boards being called for boarding and too many head contact penalties being called when the player being checked actually ducks his head into an opponent's forearm below shoulder level. I'm convinced that one of the reasons a number of NHL clubs steer their draft choices into major junior instead of NCAA is that there seem to be way too many "ticky-tacky" calls in college hockey--especially in the east. There's no reason enforcement standards can't be more practical and realistic without compromising player safety.

Maybe College Hockey, Inc. can play a role here.

Ok. Time to call a spade a spade. Mike needs to learn how to play defense at this level before he even considers the next. He has one of the worst plus/minus in Hockey East and the worst on the team. There is a reason he is at Vermont vs any other school. I am not saying he is a bad player because I think he has upside. He has made critical mistakes that have cost us multiple games especially Frozen Fenway because he has been put in a role that he is not ready for. I think its dangerous to think that he is great just because he played on the NTDP (Anyone remember Grant Scott?) as that is what our coaches have done. He was not one of the top D on that team, was not a PP guy and has much work to do skill wise until he could even consider going to a higher level. To come on here an make a statement that he is too good for this team or league is naive at best. Players develop very well in Hockey East with the same refs. I think he WILL be good if he continues to work hard and stays healthy like the rest of them.

Former Vermont head coach ... and now women's assistant ... Mike Gilligan joins George Commo and Jack Healey on The Really Big Sports Show Tuesday morning at nine (or anytime after that on the Archive) on NSNradio.net .

The Indianapolis Colts finished a dismal 2-14 this season, which earned them the first pick in the NFL draft and the right to select Andrew Luck. Sure wish we could look forward to a similar reward for our dismal season.

Let's take one from Lowell on TV and salvage the season series as one positive for the year!!!!!

at least you guys are trying. The Dolts lost many of those games on purpose, and disgracefully.

In back to worrying about our goal tending for next year. Alex looked like he was in a trance the few minutes he was in last night's game, and Rob who definitely looked a lot better, but was no where near his old self...............

I hope that didn't look better than normal for Madore. He fought everything. However, he was better than Vazzano. Rough to let in a shot from the neutral zone.

As I've said before, hopefully UVM gets better next year. The game threads and preseason flamefests really are terrific fun.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Yeah, I meant he looked much better than Alex. Although for some reason he liked doing the left to right slide on almost every shot. Making him look really shaky. I think next year is going to be great, granted they find a goalie to get through the beginning part of the schedule.

Hopefully Brody Hoffman can come in and start at goal (and it sounds like he can), because Vezzano's not our guy. I was eating dinner with my family at Taco Mac in Atlanta when Vezzano let in that shot from the hinterlands of the Merrimack Valley. I nearly choked on my food. Thankfully I was able to recover before my wife had to do the Heimlich maneuver.

I really question whether this team will be as good as everyone seems to think they'll be next season. I mean, we all thought last season was an aberration and we'd come back strong this season. Plus, I just don't think the addition of a few players is going to make that big a difference, even if they are quality players. We'll have McCarthy, Fallon, and the new goalie Hoffman for sure. Girgensons, on the other hand, I won't believe he's actually going to suit up for UVM until someone spots him on Church Street in August. So, the core of the team though will essentially still be the same, which is what troubles me. If that core can't come close to getting it done this year, I don't see a monumental change for next year. I see them more as a 7th or 8th place team in HE, or maybe a team that can contend for home ice if everything comes together.

I will say a very pleasant surprise this season has been the play of Kyle Reynolds. This guy is the real deal and, unlike so many other UVM players past and present, can put the puck in the net!

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

I like fact that they never gave up, true they got helped by alot of UML penatlies in the 3rd but most of those came because they
were working hard and Lowell thought they could coast thru the 3rd.

How many goals off faceoffs have we given up this year?? Yikes!!

I agree. I did not look at the Lowell team and say that team is a dominant top 10 playing a bottom dweller. Overall thought the Saturday game was pretty evenly played and without a fluke goal could have turned out differently. I also think people are being a bit harsh on Vazzano. The first goal was legit from what I recall and the second was just a plain fluke where his defenseman screened the shot and it hit the inside of the post and went in. Maybe it was a lack of concentration goal but I have seen goals like that happen at the NHL level as well.

Was it me or was something up with Brunateau on the power play. How many times did he lose the puck behind our own net and skate back slowly only to lose the puck to a hustling Lowell forward?

We also need some serious strength training. We seem to get muscled off the pucks in the corners pretty easily. That was really evident against BU who manhandled us around the puck.

I look at how Kevin reacted. I think he is evaluating him for next year. Obviously he did not like his mental approach for this game.

I have beat this dead horse too. Paul Goodman is missed more than anyone wants to admit.

Bruneteau have been awful and inconsistent on the PP and PK all year and yet they keep playing it the same way with the same players over and over. Why do you think we rank at near the bottom in both. PK I can understand somewhat as the goaltending has been horrific but having a bad pp is lack of preparation and skill.
