2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Unfortunately I think UVM has been relegated to the ECAC's "Brown Rule" where they have to prove to us that they can show signs of being capable to win a game before anyone can honestly pick them over another team.

Penn State unveils its design for a new hockey arena. Looks pretty amazing.

Anyone care to guess how many new hockey facilities have been built by D-1 schools in the last 3-5 years? I don't know, but I would think it's got to be easily around 10 or 12. All these other schools are doing it despite the economy, but we can't. Why?

Bottom line is........ The donors with the $$$$$$$$$$ are not into sports. UVM has many expensive new buildings, but they are geared toward environmental and sustainability type issues The folks with the big bucks are into that kind of thing. We need a guy like Tarrent who has the money, and would love to have his name on a rink!

Yeah, you're probably right. Maybe someone could design a facility that a wealthy Vermont environmentalist would be happy to have their name on. For example, building materials containing post-consumer recycled content, powered by solar energy, composting toilets, etc.

That would be our best bet! I am an adult student at UVM and walked by the new environmental building as it was being built, wishing it was a rink!

Why does Timmy hate Obama?? Seriously, didn't he go to UVM??

UPDATE: Thomas has issued the following statement: "I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People. This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers [ sic ] vision for the Federal government. Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL."

I love tim thomas. He talks about how he listens to glenn beck. Love him. Finally an athlete who gets it. He can say its not about politics or party, but his first sentence is exactly what BO is doing as president. Did i say i love time thomas?

Obviously, as a UVM alum, I like Tim Thomas a lot, but I thought he missed the mark with his decision not to attend. Even if it wasn't about politics, as he claimed, it's still the office of the President of the United States of America--show a little respect. Just my humble opinion. I'm sure others have theirs.

I didn't realize Timmay was a Glenn Beck looney tune.........Obviously his UVM education didn't teach him critical thinking and fact checking if he has been brainwashed by Beck. In his Globe statement he is correct in stating that both parties are responsible as Obama is as much a corporate shill as Bush and has continued essentially the same policy course as Bush in war and economics (which in itself makes Becks lunatic socialism rantings about Obama even more bizarre). Ahhh what else go wrong this year....:)

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Please let us not make this into a political forum. Even if he is a right winger, we should all still love Tim Thomas for what he is/was for our sport. When he runs for office all bets are off, until then lets stick to hockey.

I'm afraid Tim started it, not those who opine here. Leaving aside the politics, I was pretty disappointed in the decision he made not to attend. The ceremony was about celebrating the accomplishments of the his team last spring in the Stanley Cup. It was a last chance to relive those memories, even for a few minutes, with the President of the United States. In the article I read it stated that three guys who played last spring and who are no longer with the team made the effort to fly to Washington to be part of the ceremony. The fact that the face of the team and, lets face it the Bruins would not have won without the exploits of their #1 goalie, blew off the ceremony for some Tea Party and Glenn Beck induced, not well thought out, gibberish had to be a disappointment to the front office, his teammates and, most importantly, the Bruins loyal fans. If he wants to get his views across to the nation, he should run for office.

BTW, sorry to interject this into this forum, but I had to get this off my chest. Back to hockey.

But then the B's won't repeat if he retires and runs. (Please realize I am just having funny with this)

Now on to hockey. If UVM doesn't sweep I think any chance, even though its remote right now, is essentially gone. I think they have to win five more games then UNH right now to get in. I'm not feeling it.Thoughts?

I saw the Amherst game and agains reaffirms my prior posts, they just are not good. Madore was brutal. His head in somewhere other then the crease. There is also very few skilled players who are healthy. Sadly they just are not good. I am really hyped about next year though. You are losing Leonard, Marshall, McKenzie, Herrington, Madore and J. Vazzano. Adding, McCarthy, Brickley, Fallon, Zemgus (?), Massar, Spencer, and a goalie. Look at the additions and subtractions and this is very unbalanced to the additions. Even if you lose Stalberg, which I doubt, this team is good, very good.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

If only Timmy hadn't gotten a degree in "Small Business" -- aka the "Hockey Major" -- maybe he wouldn't be downloading garbage from the Fox News Tea Party site about "Founding Fathers" and other crap. Hey, it's tough to take the redneck out of Flint (apparently Michael Moore grew up in a different part of town :) -- even after spending four years at uber-Liberal UVM. In any case, he has hugely embarrassed himself in hockey circles. The post-career prospects won't involve colour commentating or working for the NHLPA (but did they to begin with?). Timmy did just make himself more famous than winning the Vezina x 2, Conn Smythe and Stanley Cup!! So maybe he's smarter than you think...ummmm....not really --- but I love the kid. GO CATS GO!! And Sneddon, tell Micheletto to get some more Canadians on the team - esp. from Quebec -- apparently it works for the Bruins = IDIOT!

Sneddon says we're still playing for this year until someone tells us we're mathematically eliminated but, let's face it, it's over. We just don't have the firepower to make the kind of run it'll take to make the playoffs, and I don't see a sweep this weekend (unless we get swept). We're playing with an eye toward next year but, with that said, I don't see much we can do to prepare for next year that we're not already doing. For example, the freshman and fringe players are already getting way more ice time than they would otherwise expect to get. The only thing we might consider is changing up is goal, but even that's debatable whether it will help, because I don't see Vazzano being the starter next year.

Agreed. Madore's head has been up a different kind of crease, if you know what I mean.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

I just checked and Vermont Ranks 50th in Scoring offense, 56th in scoring defense, dead last in PK, 39th on PP, Tied for last in Short handed goals allowed, and dead last in combined special teams. All that was achieved with playing the same guys on PP and PK all year. How could we possibly start playing for "next year" ? There have been no consequences all year for the special teams players. Until I see 5 freshman on the PP, we are not playing for next year, but then again we are not playing to win with the rest of the lot playing PP and PK either. Its pathetic and really a sad story that we have gotten to this point but after looking at those numbers, the coaches can blame it on youth and injuries all they want..Brickley was part of those numbers (which BTW have gotten better with him out). Time for Sneddon to make a change!!

So, what is it you're proposing Sneddon do? Shake up the power play and penalty kill units? If your go-to guys aren't getting it done on the PP and PK, what makes you think the fringe players will be able to produce better results?
