2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Just another reason to hate having players in the World Juniors

No offense, but this is not one of your finer posts. WJC is fantastic and these kids love the chance to represent their country. Odds of getting injured there are about as slim as getting injured playing/practicing at UVM during the WJC.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

The news on Brickley stinks. That probably means the season for him as "indefinite" means it's not DTD or a reasonable number of weeks.

That caps his development for this season in which he had taken a remarkable step forward from last year and steals more than half of what will likely be a three year stay for him at UVM.

This team is just decimated, as documented in earlier posts. I have not done the math but do they even have 18 bodies left to skate? Sounds like nobody is coming back soon either.

Any chance of running down a playoff spot is toast.

I continue to believe they will be much improved next year if they don't lose Stalberg, Brickley or anyone else unexpectedly. I see Reynolds, Markinson, and Montagna all having big years next year. Girgensons would be a huge help obviously. The new goaltender will battle with the remaining Vazzano and tending should be better than this year. I would not be surprised to see them battling for home ice.

I added UVM Practice pix to my Frozen Fewnay galleries:

I didn't shoot the first game as we had someone else shooting for CHN, but I got some decent scenic shots of the rink during the game, I'll have more up each day until it's complete...

Welll no matter how the rest the season goes at least we will have the 3rd period and OT from tonight.

The Stalburg/Markison/Reynolds line was amazing in the third, constantly attacking with speed and getting to
every loose puck. You could see the way Stalburg and Mckenzie were playing that they didnt want to let another
one slip away as they spent alot of time on the ice and never seemed to slow down.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

As much as I would like to think the 3rd and OT would be the "turnaround" point for UVM in this lost season I don't really think that is going to be case given the trainload of wounded they have. Without Brickley and McCarthy - the former of which is apparently out for the season also - their offensive depth is just castrated. That leaves them with one dangerous line rather than two.

It was a great inspiring comeback but I think it had more to do with UML coming out in the 3rd in a trance and not responding the UVM's intensity. If UML comes out fired up the Cats would not have been able to dominate like they did.

However, it does show that UVM - despite the mass injuries - has the skills and speed to take it to an opponent on an opponent off night IF UVM steps it up.

Hopefully the kids noted how the crowd will get fired up if they play inspired hockey. That was the loudest I have heard the Gutt this year and a sparse crowd due to gorgeous snowy weather for a change.

I'm looking for the Cats to take a step forward next year like UML has done this year. And I'm looking for way more snow next winter

Wow! With motivation like that, one would think that a few players follow the rivalry on this message board! :)

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Tough season's require looking for silver linings. With the injuries, all of the freshmen are getting more ice time and hopefully accelerating their development. May bode well for the future.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

God forbid Hendrickson or Connelly should ever write something in their HE column about UVM. Granted, we're not doing anything noteworthy, but they could write something about our struggles and perhaps add some fresh perspective that we don't normally get from other sources. Just a thought.

Time to give Vazzano Jr. some experience between the pipes. This team isn't making the playoffs and it's time to look towards next year. It's not all Madore's fault, but heck ... sometimes change is good.

Good thought, but I'm not so sure I agree. Madore gives them their best chance to win. They need confidence going into next season, which can best be accomplished by winning. I might think otherwise if Vazzano was the heir apparent to the starting job, but he's not. It sounds like the new recruit will have a leg up on Vazzano for the starting job.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

The goalie situation is a bit strange to me. Vazzano had high marks coming in, not so much now. The new guy looks promising, but who knows. Word out is that the have another recruit in their sights. Who recruits a third string goalie ?
If you think Vazzano is the man, and you bring in another player to push him fine, or the other way around. but why a third ?
Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

He seemed to play ok in the games he played. Not sure what the suspension was for but seems he has been in the dog house since then.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Seems kinda of obvious they are playing for next year.........Why not at least rotate him in ?

If you win 8 games in a season and then lose your starting goalie, how do you have confidence in your starter that has barely seen time between the pipes? I do agree, that if Vazzano is still going to be a back up then no point, but I think he at least challenges for the role. Spillane got more playing time then he ever deserved as a career back up. A capable goalie, but quite clearly never the starter.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

It is am interesting situation. At this point, I think "being in the doghouse" does not fit the "build for next year" plan. Either they have confidence in Alex becoming a starter, or they don't. Winning a few games with Rob in net may be good morale boost, but if Alex is the starter next season, no one will believe in his ability unless he has some success to back it up.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Either they have confidence in Alex becoming a starter, or they don't.
I really don't think they have that confidence. Otherwise, with the way Madore has struggled this year, they would have given him a lot more playing time. I think they gave him just enough PT to figure out he's not our guy going forward.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Sort of thinking the same thing..............Although he has not played enough to give him a full shot at passing/failing.
I think the doghouse has prevented any talent from shining through.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Go Cats Go! Right.....? Anyone.....? I'm going to predict an upset here and say the Cats win tonight 3-2. Could be the beginning of an unprecedented roll that ends with our first national championship! Who's with me?!?!?
