2011-12 Schedules

Re: 2011-12 Schedules

Then the Pool C is down to 2 (which, for all practical purposes it is now anyway).

Which is why I think that scheduling with an eye to Pool C will be really silly. If I recall, back in the early days of the "Pool" system, there was only one Pool C slot, and Pool C was almost a random event. I think conferences should plan their schedules with an eye to getting the best team that they can into to post season - the SUNYAC and the NCHA should return to the best of three playoff format because gaming Pool C is not going to be very rewarding and they should have a playoff system that will produce the best possible qualifier, instead of one that protects a team with a good regular season record from a potential playoff failure. Just random thoughts...

Would / should the ECAC-E consider such a system for at least the opening round???

Should they, I think so. Would they - probably not. Certainly one of the most infamous playoff upsets in NU history might have been averted - the NU first round loss to UMB back a few years.

I think that NU would not have lost to UMB twice in one weekend.

I agree but I think its a lost cause. Too many other teams who would turn it down just for the chance to win a playoff game/series/round.

Only the ECAC-W needs to schedule with an eye on Pool C. They're not guaranteed (wink, wink, nod, nod) anything.

True enough, there's "no" certainty that someone from that league gets in at all. However, I think most of agree that the reality is that there are only two Pool C spots up for grabs as it stands. Adding another team would just make that official.

Stout in '07, Adrian in '08, Middlebury in '09, or Salem last season may debate that assertion with you.
Without the AQ, both the MCHA & MASCAC were SOL.

Until the D-III selection process becomes open like our big brothers in D-I land, we'll just never know for sure why.

Re: 2011-12 Schedules

The only teams that have to rely on Pool C for getting in are the ones in the ECAC W (now). If anybody except for an ECAC W team doesn't get in and feels they deserve it, they only have to look at the last game they played (the one they lost in the playoffs). Pool C bids will just be accidental events. That's why I advocate a playoff process that rewards the best teams and provides the best opportunity for the best teams. Even better plan - give the AQ to the regular season champ, and let the playoffs be for bragging rights and the trophy. The upset winners could be contenders for Pool C. Baring that, every round should be best of three.

Let's be real, any team with NCAA aspirations that plays in a league with a dominant member(s) (ECAC/E, ex-NESCAC, SUNYAC) realistically has only the Pool C route. Yes there are exceptions, but how many years running has Norwich won the regular season title??

Norwich has won every ECAC/E title since the NESCAC left the ECAC/E. There have been other ECAC East champions however due to playoff upsets.

Norwich has won 13 straight ECAC East regular season titles.

So my point is ... if I'm Castleton or Babson, and my objective is a sniff at an NCAA bid, and my odds of getting the Pool A bid ahead of NU are ~5%, I'm scheduling my NC games with an eye toward the NCAA Pool C, ie not with MASCAC or NE10 or bottom feeder ECAC/NE teams. [But then again, I'm a logical person with high aspirations not content with mediocrity]

Re: 2011-12 Schedules

Last year was the second year that the MCHA had an auto bid.

Correct. Adrian has only qualified for the NCAA Tournament through the MCHA autobid and they have been in the tourney the last two seasons.

The first year they lost to St. Norbert in the First Round i believe in a one or two goal game.

But on the flip side you have a team in Oswego who has won the SUNYAC regular season crown 5 times in 7 years, yet only have 1 SUNYAC Championship to show for it. Had it been a 3 game or 2 game/mini game tournament, I see Oswego winning probably 2 or 3 more SUNYAC titles. The exact reason why I don't think you will see the other SUNYAC teams (outside of Plattsburgh and Oswego) ever want to go back to a 3 game series.
