2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Has anything, good or bad, anything at all, ever come out of RI?

Great season Gophers. We all know I was rooting against you, but I respect the effort of your team and what they did this year. Big turnaround from the recent struggles.

I hope that we can get close to that (your) level next year and make the last year of the WCHA (the real WCHA) a memorable one.

Now **** off! :p:D
I'll drink to that. (Well, as a Badger, I'll drink to anything).

Good season, mortal enemies. Shame to end a great season like that, but we can feel your pain.

BC Hockey: The great unifier?

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

I thought the Boston College tiny 18 year old freshman Johnny Gaudeau put on an impressive performance last night.

He does stick out. Without him, BC's top 10 guys average older than a junior.

On the other hand, Minnesota's whole team is full of 18/19 yo guys...many of whom are off to the pros.

Huge part of that is that BC recruits guys who may not be great NHL prospects due to size etc but who are perfect for the college game.

Not your defensive core. They should all be gone. And I'll bet they would be gone had they played in the wcha...its a different culture out west.

Not to mention that he agreed with Melrose's statement that "these two teams provided the majority of the players on the 1980 Miracle team..." Of course, that would be BU (not BC) as all Minnesota fans know (Silk, Craig, O'Callahan and Eruzione). What a joke. And for those people who criticize when I say that ESPN doesn't take hockey seriously, I rest my case.

I laughed at that one. Was there even one BC player on the team?

To be fair, Boston is just one franchise. Why we had to play a two game total goal series against them, i'll never know.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Sadly, a loss / rout was the only way I saw the over being hit. I thought MN's defense would play better than that, but alas, they did not.

First 20 minutes Gophers ruled, second 20 minutes Gophers lost control of the game, third period was just sad for Gopher fans. :D:D:D:D

USA Today Reported:
Boston College pounds Minnesota in Frozen Four semifinals

Quotes fron USA TODAY:
"We couldn't get anything going on our side, and they capitalized on their chances," Minnesota forward Jake Hansen said. "We felt we were putting on the pressure; we just needed one to go in. It was embarrassing how it got out of control."
Eagles picked off a Golden Gophers turnover at center ice and turned it into Chris Kreider's goal.
Minnesota goalie Kent Patterson was caught out of net trying to thwart a 2-on-1 break, and Carey hit the open goal.

So is this the consensus then, that age/early departures is the key reason for the loss to BC? Makes sense. And, if one compares this, say, to UND's similar loss to BC in the 2008 FF, it is less embarrassing. After all, the Sioux just got pounded by a better team, no excuses. In the gopher's case, it wasn't even the team's fault. In fact, it's even kind of unfair.

You forgot that the Gophs lost their own holiday tournament to Northeastern.....also from Boston?

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

I just got back to the hotel, and I wanted to come on here and say what a great, surprising season Minnesota had. While it ended all too familiarly for North Dakota fans (I still choose to forget the '08 Frozen Four), Minnesota fans should keep their heads up. The Gophers were the best team in the WCHA, and if perhaps a bounce or two would have gone differently the game could have had a far different outcome. Minnesota had a great run, and the cupboard is overflowing with talent for next season. I would not be surprised in the least if Minnesota was raising a few trophies next season.

Anyway, great season Minnesota. A MacNaughton Cup and a trip to the Frozen Four is quite an accomplishment.

Once again you have me re-thinking my automatic hatred for all NoDak fans.

This really was a heck of a year, regardless of how it finally ended. If anyone had told me at the beginning of the year that the Gophers would end up with the MacNaughton AND a trip to Tampa, I'd have been looking for professional help for them. The Frozen Four trip being the lesser of the two surprises, to be honest, since I expected them to be good enough to get back to the tournament and hosting the regional, I knew they'd be dangerous there.

Incidentally, on the way from the bar back to my car a bit after the game, the group I was with passed a couple Sioux fans who said something along the lines of "Been there, done that with BC".... pretty much summed things up to me and my two friends.

80% of the Gopher's scoring came from underclassmen. They had 1 junior and no seniors on defense. This team could be special if they bring everyone back.

This sounds like a trap. Are you getting us to acknowledge that the Sioux have had good teams regardless of the outcome the last 10 years? ;)

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Don't want to hijack this thread, but does 5 minute major understand that BC loses guys early just like every other program? They lost three guys last year, will lose at least two this year and bring in freshmen the same age as gopher freshmen. If the complaint is that BC gets three years from its stars compared to two years for other programs, well I don't know what to tell you. Get over it.

BC lost 19 players after 2 years or less in a 3-year period?

Nope, didn't say they did. But, if they did, i'd seriously be questioning my coach and his recruiting philosophy.

I would too, and did. As did MANY Gopher fans. Lucia, in my opinion, was slow to adjust to the changes in the college hockey landscape post NHL lockout and new CBA (illness probably didn't help). He has since adjusted well in my opinion. And I think he has learned some from what York has been doing in BC. They have been recruiting a mix of blue chip recruits and role guys (or guys who will accept a checking line role, etc), and have been drafting more players with less prototypical NHL size and bringing in less players directly from high school and having them spend time in juniors first. It's already paying dividends IMO.

You missed the point again...but I left this three days ago. So I suggest you get over it.
