2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Go away, nothing ever good has come out of RI anyway.

Has anything, good or bad, anything at all, ever come out of RI?

Great season Gophers. We all know I was rooting against you, but I respect the effort of your team and what they did this year. Big turnaround from the recent struggles.

I hope that we can get close to that (your) level next year and make the last year of the WCHA (the real WCHA) a memorable one.

Now **** off! :p:D

Gurt, thanks man, I'm just glad that when all this new conference crap shakes out we can still play our favorite deer humpers at least 4 times a year. :)

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

I just got back to the hotel, and I wanted to come on here and say what a great, surprising season Minnesota had. While it ended all too familiarly for North Dakota fans (I still choose to forget the '08 Frozen Four), Minnesota fans should keep their heads up. The Gophers were the best team in the WCHA, and if perhaps a bounce or two would have gone differently the game could have had a far different outcome. Minnesota had a great run, and the cupboard is overflowing with talent for next season. I would not be surprised in the least if Minnesota was raising a few trophies next season.

Anyway, great season Minnesota. A MacNaughton Cup and a trip to the Frozen Four is quite an accomplishment.

Classy as always buddy. Thanks :)

If the actions of your team showed any pride I failed to see it.....they were outplayed in EVERY aspect of the game and then the dirt started to fly.....what a horrid display of sportsmanship, they should be ashamed of their hockey and their play

No, they were outplayed for PART of the game and BC was outshot by a wide margin early. Matson's retaliation was very uncharacteristic of his style of play EVER. I've never seen him irate like he was with the BC player in the scuffle along the wall...so there may have been more to the story. Go whine somewhere else.

And what a horrid display of sportsmanship you're showing as well. Takes a big man to lecture an opponent's fanbase after their team just lost. Stay classy.

Ashamed of their hockey and play? Wiener your team traps. Enough said. Boring.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

BC did not play particularly well in the first period, and I thought MN had a real shot at it until about halfway through the second. Unfortunately, MN failed on its grade A chances when they still had a chance. Once BC got the 3-0 lead, there was no coming back from that. BC is a buzzsaw, plain and simple. You make any mistakes against them, they turn into 2-on-1's and goals against - MN learned that lesson the hard way. Hopefully all the returning players next season store this memory in the back of their minds - not just what it took to win the conference and regional, but what happens when you lose your focus against a top flight team such as BC in the Frozen Four. You simply cannot have a bad shift against a team like that, or you will pay the price.

All in all, it was a nice season with some unexpected success (if we are to believe the preseason predicted finish of 6th in the league). Now let's build on it and make another run next season. They should certainly have the talent to do it, although things will get a lot younger in goal.

Hats off to BC. They've had the best program the last 10-15 years and show no signs of slowing down. I wonder if York made a deal with the devil - this run is rather ridiculous in this day and age with pro departures.

I hate agreeing with the Commie, but dam. Yep. Buzzsaw is the word I would use. "oops I slipped" *boom 3 goals*.

I warned you about BC. In the handful of games I've seen them play, nothing has led me to believe they are anything but the top team in the country - by far. There's sandbagging (pre-region final against UND), and then there's simple honesty. My assessment of BC heading into this game was the latter. Their transition game is simply lethal, and they have a nose for the net. Those cross-ice feeds with guys near the crease finding themselves open? They are masterful at that.

I hope MN paid attention and learns a lesson from that heading to next season. That's how you must play to not only beat teams but to destroy them. I believe the Gophers have the talent to do similar things, but they need to have the will and commitment to step on their opponents' throats when opportunities arise.

Like it or not, BC is the model program right now. Should they win Saturday, their run since '98 probably trumps *any* period of that length by *any* team since Michigan won a billion titles way back in the '50s.

The game did hit the over. ;) I hope you listened to me. :(

Sadly, a loss / rout was the only way I saw the over being hit. I thought MN's defense would play better than that, but alas, they did not.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Kent Patterson had a phenomenal season and whoever comes in to replace him next season has a hard act to follow. Lucia thought about pulling Patterson against BC, but decided to let him play out his final game.

"Probably, if he wasn't a senior, I might have (pulled him)," said Lucia. "But he's a senior, and he earned it to finish that out. We wouldn't have gotten here without him. I'm sure he's disappointed in the result. Those things are going to happen some nights. But Kent had a great year for us and probably more than any other player on our team was responsible for the year that we had."

Two keys to BC:

Team Defense in their end...ya Milner was great as he needed to be. But the team minimized our chances at any kind of bounce. Its easy to keep pummeling a goalie...but its demoralizing if you can't get to him.
Age...the extra year their team over the gophers and undoubtedly every team in the wcha is huge...just thinking our guys got this far largely after two years. DU, UND and you have to figure the gophers will lose their best sophomores...while BC was headlined by upperclassmen.

Huge part of that is that BC recruits guys who may not be great NHL prospects due to size etc but who are perfect for the college game.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

I thought the Boston College tiny 18 year old freshman Johnny Gaudeau put on an impressive performance last night.

Sure. That's why BC overall was much bigger than Minnesota was.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Nice to have Gary "Thor-nee" back in his usual baffoon fashion mispronouncing nearly every Gopher players name...what a clown of an announcer.

Not to mention that he agreed with Melrose's statement that "these two teams provided the majority of the players on the 1980 Miracle team..." Of course, that would be BU (not BC) as all Minnesota fans know (Silk, Craig, O'Callahan and Eruzione). What a joke. And for those people who criticize when I say that ESPN doesn't take hockey seriously, I rest my case.
