For those questioning the size and passion of our fan base - When it was announced that the Gophers were #1 in the USCHO Poll today, the traffic to the website brought the sever down.

Pride On Ice!!!

First off, on Demarchi, at the time NO ONE defended Demarchi's penalties. 95% of them were called "stupid" by fans on POI and USCHO and at the arena. I dont think anyone really appreciated him until his senior year. That is not to say Ambroz is not a moron, but hindsight is always 20/20 ;) For the record, I am not concerned yet, he is a frosh.

On the topic of "The Gophers Havent Played Anybody Yet" that started in 2002. It was a St. Cloud State Husky deal. The week before the Gophers vs. Huskies showdown (they were 2 of the Top 3 teams at the time) during the intermission report for the Huskies broadcast the chick they had talking about the coming matchup against us talked about the poll and how the Gophers should not be #1 because "they havent played anybody yet". It was then adopted by a few of the Husky fans on this board after it was brought up by some of us Gopher fans. It then evolved into a big mess of jokes. By the time the Gophs swept the Huskies to end the regular season the joke was played out since the Gophs beat EVERYONE down the stretch :D

Back then Scooby Doo was the Ruler of North Dakota thanks to General Zod and I made the preseason statement of "wouldnt it be awesome if Johnny Pohl hit 200 points on the GWG at the Xcel to win the title"! (seriously how great was that call before the season huh) Good times :)

Kneel before ZOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those were the days.

Sounded entertaining... I missed it.

I remember on more than one occasion shaking my head at the TV when DeMarchi got yet another penalty to take away momentum. :) But then just like Lloyd he totally redeemed himself.

#1 does feel good, even if poles, pohls, polls don't matter.

I'm pretty sure that with my great hockey mind I called for benching him multiple times.:o

But I do have 20-20 hindsight!

Handy, do you recall that I dug back many, many pages of the season thread to remind you of that? I had just happened to read the whole season thread that year during the break between the NCAA Regional Championship and the Frozen Four so it was fresh in my mind. That was a crazy prediction. Nostradamus like!

I do recall...as if I could not get more annoyingly arrogant thanks to you my cup runneth over! ;)

Man that year was fun...oh the stories I heard

Interest in hockey poll crashed web site

.

One of the busiest nights for USCHO.com is the Saturday in March when conference third-place and championship games are being played.

Conference champions get automatic bids to the NCAA tournament. And who wins and loses games that day determine which bubble teams make the field as at-large teams and which don't.

But around noon on Monday, USCHO.com had "roughly equal" the traffic as it has that busy evening in March. So the web site got backed up for about 30 minutes.

Why so many hits? USCHO.com came out with its weekly college hockey poll. People were either going to the web site's home page or poll page. And at the top of the poll, climbing four spots were the Gophers. Tweets on Twitter heralded the poll's release and Minnesotans rushed to see it.

"Almost the entire spike in traffic can be attributed to visitors from the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area," Todd Milewski, USCHO.com executive editor wrote in an e-mail.

He said 30 minutes were needed to clear up the backlog. I tried to get on the USCHO.com site for a long time -- seemed more than 30 minutes, but I am not a patient fellow -- and couldn't. I asked Milewski exactly how many hits USCHO.com got around noon? He said that information was not available.

What seems obvious is there is a lot of interest in Gophers hockey despite some empty seats at early-season games. The two home games against Vermont drew crowds in the 8,000-range. Mariucci Arena has room for 10,000-plus and both North Dakota games were sellouts. Interest in the team seems to be increased now that it is doing well again.

Anyone watching this Penn St stuff unfold? A friend of mine who is close with the local media folk and fsn just murmered there could be huge implications with the formation of the Big 10.. I have no idea or opinion on it.. Just wondering if anyone else has a better understanding and a more educted opinion on this topic..

Unless this scandal impacts the PSU atheletic department and its overally relationship with the BigT, I don't see how it could impact the hockey conference.

Unless PSU kills their athletics programs as a result of this, I really don't know how or why it would have any impact on anything outside their football program.

I really don't quite understand why it would do impact it. The whole situation at Penn State is a terrible thing but there aren't going to be NCAA sanctions against their athletic department for something that is strictly a legal matter. The only way their hockey program is going to be impacted is if their benefactor decided to pull his money out over the situation and I doubt that is going to happen since he was willing to throw so much money behind it in the first place. Penn State may have a lot of issues to deal with this but its not like their sports are going to go the way of the dodo bird.
