2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Bruins now have $54.3 million committed to next year for 17 players. They've got around $5 million left to dick around with.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

As for the Sharks...Chris Mason would be an excellent fit. Plenty of options though.

Plenty of options? Nabokov was viewed as the highest profile guy on the market and SJ said no thanks to him. I don't see any replacements on the free agent market that I'd be comfortable with as a contending team.

Fair enough. I'm of the opinion that teams don't need an elite goaltender to win a Cup....as recent history has shown us.

Niemi certainly came out of nowhere, but at the same time, San Jose isn't as good as Chicago. One way to help would be to improve your goaltending. I just don't see that with this group of free agents.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Boychuk resigned, 2yrs/3.5M total.

Edit: Link.

I love Johnny, he performed well this year. Getting him taken care of was a big deal...

So we have:

Chara Sidenberg

Boychuk Ferrence

McQuaid Hunwick

That's not a bad group. McQuaid looked okay in the playoffs...and I've always liked Hunwick.

What about Mark Stuart? He'll probably be in there. They need another guy though. Signing Ference was retarded.

Sure; that's one way. Another way would be to take the savings by having a cheaper option in net and addressing team needs in other areas. Not saying at all you're wrong or I'm right, just two different styles/belief systems.

Much like what happened in Montreal, San Jose made a choice to keep other players at the expense of their incumbent goalie.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Niemi may have come out of nowhere, but he'd been a highly touted prospect in the Blackhawks system for a couple years now. The only thing surprising is that Quenneville didn't screw with the goaltending at all. Niemi will be a very good goalie in the NHL. No flash in the pan action there.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

I'm high on Boychuk so I think it's a good deal for Boston. As for the NTC, what kind of world do we live in when a guy with 56 games played in the NHL deserves any sort of no movement clause??
Hey. It's Chiarelli's world. We just live in it. I have no idea why he tosses NTC's like they were pennies. As if Thomas's huge contract, age and ability weren't going to make him hard enough to trade, Chia added a NTC onto it?

Yes, the Ference deal was stupid for a number of reasons.

And this is what I don't get about Chiarelli. Every good move (and there are plenty) is balanced out by some absolutely insane deal he makes. I don't get him.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Preds sent Arnott to the Devils for a 2nd rounder and some dude I've never heard of.
Lou is incapable of rebuilding with Brodeur still around. He can't honestly believe that he can win another Cup with these pieces, even if he could resign Paul Martin (which he probably can't). The contracts of Elias, Rolston, Zubrus and Pandolfo are killing this team. Only Pando is in his last year and he has zero trade value. If it was possible, I'd keep Parise, Zajac and Greene and otherwise try to dismantle the team but I don't know who would take on these contracts. They are just screwed for a few years it would appear. Rather than take on Arnott they should be trying to dump salaries. Between the Kovalchuk trade and now this they're giving away high picks to restock the cupboard.

Edit - I'd keep Clarkson, too.

I agree.

Look at Niemi, Fleury, Giguere, Khabibulin, heck... a slew of whatifs ( I mean, what if Philly had won the Cup this year? Leighton and Boucher are as about the most opposite of "elite" as one can get).

The difference is that Fleury and Niemi aren't flash in the pans. I think Fleury is overrated, but not a bad goaltender. I think Niemi is untested by time, but I think he'll pan out too.

The rest are pretty much done.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

This contract was an overpayment in that Marleau's *last* contract was too high. He made 6.3 million the last two years, and then had 39 and 44 goals and had an okay playoff (looks better on his stat sheet then watching it live) You really can't convince a guy who scored 83 goals in two years to take a pay cut, especially when I'm sure he could have gotten at least 7.5 on the market.

Pavelski was probably heading for 3.5 or so before the playoffs. 4 million's not bad considering Kesler.

I'm assuming the Sharks will resign Nichol and Malhotra for about .800 and 1.5 respectively, which will put them at 16 with $10 million to play with. Clowe (3.625) is the odd forward out if they decide they want more space.

Eh, Philly lost directly due to some bad goaltending. If they had a batter goalie, maybe they end up beating Chicago. I agree you don't need a Brodeur to win it, but I'm just not sold on the FA goalies this year.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Yes, Tim Thomas' agent was granted permission to seek a trade. But he hasn't called anyone, and ain't nobody calling him.

“I know what’s out there now — a story that says I’m out to get a deal done,’’ said Zito, the Chicago-based agent who was instrumental in finding Thomas work in both Europe and North America. “But that’s just not true. Absolutely nothing has been brought to me. No team has come to me and said, ‘Yes, we want him, would he come here?’ And I am not actively canvassing the NHL to find Timmy a new place to play.’’
