2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Arizona's constitution makes it illegal for cities to subsidize to Pro Sports teams. Even if they vote Yes, I see lawsuits abound.

Yeah that's the part I'd be curious to see how they try to find a way to get around should they be crazy enough to go for it. One way or another, the drop-dead date is June 30th. If the city council opts to make a run after keeping the team, somehow, and thinks they can get all the litigation done and settled in a month and a half... Good luck to them.

I've got a funny feeling though that the NHL Draft will feature the grand showcase for the Winnipeg Jets.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Sort of like the AHL. Eight teams in one division, seven in the other. 15 teams for both conferences. Top four from each advance to the post season*.

* And to make it interesting, use the AHL "transfer rule" where if the fifth place team in the eight team division has more points than the fourth place team in the seven team division within their conference, they can slide into the fourth spot for the post season.

I meant in terms of scheduling division games vs. conference games vs. non-conference games.

That angle gets complicated when the divisions don't have equal numbers.

I don't know. As it is, some AHL teams play their closest rivals in division 10 times a season, remaining teams in division a little closer to eight times. With only a few trips to the other conference. I'm sure scheduling could be worked out on a two year cycle to make it even.

That's up to people that get paid more than I do to think about. :D

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Can someone enlighten me as to what has changed in Winnipeg, other than the strength of the CDN dollar, that makes putting an NHL team there a prudent decision now? Didn't they draw an average of attendance of 12-13,000 back then? Do they love hockey more now than they did then? It's still a small market, with a small building (relative to the rest of the NHL), whose fans currently pay AHL prices but may not want to pay NHL prices, right?

Look at what happened in Minnesota and (to a lesser degree) Colorado.

I'm willing to bet that Winnipeg will be so grateful to have a franchise again that they'll support it en masse, whichever way they can.

Granted: Hamilton's still a better bet, but who do you move to the Western Conference? Atlanta?

There's a better arena there, albeit still small for NHL purposes. From what I understand, Winnipeg is still relatively poor so charging folks Maple Leafs-like prices won't go over well. It's likely they'd still lose money up there, just not to the obscene degree the Coyotes have in Phoenix/Glendale. The league is obviously different now. They'll almost certainly be a candidate right away to get revenue sharing so that will help out, there's cost certainty (to a degree) with the cap.

The biggest key here, though, is that there's a group of people with money in hand ready to take over the team and make the problem go away for the NHL. Will the team be a long-term success in Winnipeg? Only one way to find out I guess. The league has to hope that the $CDN stays in line with the $US or else things will get out of hand fast in Canada should the loony fall back.

Minneapolis-St. Paul has 3.5 million in their metro. Denver has 2.5.

Winnipeg has a shade under 700,000, and 1 town in the rest of Manitoba over 13,000.

Winnipeg will last as long as long as the team doesn't suck balls like they have for most of the last 10 years and Thomson is interested in losing money to "make it 7." He's a billionaire, so I give him at least a decade. The minute he puts it up for sale, they're heading right back out of town, though.

Aren't they both much larger cities though? And aren't both significantly wealthier than Winnipeg, with a much larger corporate base?

EDIT: Looks like nick beat me to the punch. I guess a billionaire owner that can afford to lose money (if it happens) is the biggest difference. But that alone doesn't bode well for long-term health. Especially for a guy that, if I've read correctly, actually lives in Toronto.

Golden Horseshoe 2 is the holy grail of expansion. You'd have to pay off the Buffalo and the Leafs to get it done and theres the not so crazy suggestion the NHL would rather rig the process so that the team is a product of expansion rather than relocation (after contraction?).

which again, explains what's wrong with the NHL. I fully believe that's probably the way to go in a few years after this Phoenix thing is resolved... dissolve Atlanta and then go after Kitchener-Waterloo

I thought Atlanta had stable ownership and a really long-term lease at Phillips Arena?

If I was going to move anyone, I'd target the Panthers. I hear they average between 5k and 10k actual attendance (not paid/announced attendance).

Bwahahahahahahaha

Unlike other injuries, this one isn't one the Blackhawks would try to exploit if Salo plays.

"I'm going to give him a free pass on that one," Chicago winger Patrick Sharp said in a serious tone. "It's funny for everyone looking on the outside, but for the players I don't think it's very funny."

Blackhawks agitator Adam Burish was willing to joke about it, but he took the same stance.

"I don't want to cross that line," Burish said. "I can't imagine what that would feel like.

"If he plays tonight, that guy is an iron man. Maybe I will rub up against him so I can get some of that toughness, because how you can play through that blows my mind."

Burish then reconsidered.

"I'm not going near that thing," he said. "What if it pops? I don't know."

Salo's teammate Shane O'Brien was pretty emphatic that testing Salo in that area would be pretty low.

When informed that Burish agreed that it would be crossing a line, O'Brien scoffed.

"You're going to trust Burish, eh? That's your first mistake," O'Brien said. "If he did rub up against him, that would be Burish's first hit of the series."

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Didn't some Chicago shot pop Lidstrom in the nuts last year? And he still played against Pittsburgh.

When it's the playoffs, hockey players will play through anything if the team doctors will let them.

The crowd doesn't seem to have been taken out of it; good on them.

Anyone got a Red Wings score?
