2010 Panther Cardinal Classic

Re: 2010 Panther Cardinal Classic

Nor'Easter conditions yesterday were brutes from what I heard.

I was thinking about making the 2:30 hour trek to Oswego for the Oswego/Elmira men's game because I had the night off but once I heard the weather sucked I figured I'd just listen to it on the radio.

Turned out to be a good decision because I heard roads were AWFUL after the game with the Lake Effect snow and icy conditions off the shores of Lake Ontario.

I had a friend driving to Rochester and they said they saw three cars off the road in a span of a few miles.

Undoubtabley an "Alberta Clipper"...

Re: 2010 Panther Cardinal Classic

Great Thanks! Is the weather really that bad down there?

There have been pockets of real snowy areas around all of the great lakes. Condition known as LES ( Lake Effect Snow ).

Heard the I-90 was pretty brutal from Rochester to Buffalo the other day. Similarly the 402 (Georgian Bay), 400 (Lake Huron), QEW (Lake Erie) and 401 near Brockville (Lake Ontario) and near London (Georgian Bay) were treacherous all weekend.

Funny thing is....Hardly any snow in the GTA.

Re: 2010 Panther Cardinal Classic

USCHO will have video and audio of both games today. Made it in finally and we're all set up. Check the front page for links.

Do we need to run both to get both or will the video feed automatically run the audio feed as well?

I've got the video feed up right now and all I've got is a shot at the scoreboad.

Re: 2010 Panther Cardinal Classic

Congratulations to Elmira on their 2-1 win tonight at Kenyon. Amherst did not look as sharp as they did yesterday against Plattsburgh and were not able to cash in their opportunities, going 1-7 on the powerplay. Elmira was able to keep Amherst forwards clear of the crease and take advantage of their chances.

Re: 2010 Panther Cardinal Classic

and hey Seymore... put that in your crackpipe and smoke it. EC sweeps! If you need any help with your future poll picks..give me a jingle. :)

Re: 2010 Panther Cardinal Classic

Congrats to Karen Colehour ('10), Caitlin Metcalf ('13) and Lauren Sullivan ('13) from Elmira for making the All Tournament team.

Karen, that had to feel good after last March, right? :D

Two rooks on the All tournament team. Bodes well for the future at EC.

Re: 2010 Panther Cardinal Classic

I would be remiss if I didn't mention how impressed I was with the USCHO coverage of this tournament. This was the first time I have watched the USCHO Game of the Week and was blown away by both the audio and video coverage. The commentator was well informed about the teams and players which helped him with his analysis. The between period interviews with the coaches was especially done well. The questions put to the coaches begged for answers that only the coach would know and touched on goaltending, forwards, defense, PP, PK, frosh, seniors and historical info about their teams.

ESPN could take some tips from these guys...the only thing that was missing was Don Cherry and Coaches Corner.

Kudo's to both the on & off air USCHO staff for putting an exceptional product out there for the fans.

All local webcasters that are trying to hone their craft could certainly use the USCHO coverage as the model to shoot for.

Agreed. Listened to the audio-cast during yesterday's games and it was exemplary. Well done!

Re: 2010 Panther Cardinal Classic

We have returned from the winter wonderland that is Vermont in January. What a great weekend of hockey! Congratulations and thanks to Friends of Panther Hockey, Middlebury Director of Athletics Erin Quinn, the Kenyon staff (kudos to the Midd softball team in the snack bar) and all the players and coaches for providing a very special event!!!
That said, my editor and travel companion, Ms. Obserbear, has made the following statement: "The level of officiating has not advanced along with the increased speed and athletic ability of DIII women's play. The girls deserve better!"

Aren't the officials pretty much the same ones as for Div III men? Or, do they have a different set of refs for the men's and women's D-3 games?

I agree 100% I can't believe these guys get paid sometimes. Calls made that are sixty feet away from the puck. Not that I disagree with off the puck calls but when something happens right in front of them that is an obvious call on the play nothing is done. Often out of position as well I don't know how anyone can make a close offsides call when they are skating 20 feet behind a play trying to catch up. I understand missing a call here or there but on a weekend like this past, any call made or missed is a game changer.

On a side note, watching the Platty-Potsdam game, I know it was a blowout but there were two refs going back and forth to eachother on the blueline laughing, apparantly one had funny jokes and the game didnt mean enough to pay attention to- very unprofessional.

Very astute observation - I wholeheartedly agree with that too.

Re: 2010 Panther Cardinal Classic

It's unfortunate that there are so many occasions where there is a loose puck, either along the boards or in open ice, and two girls go for it, then collide, and if one falls the other gets a penalty. The way it is now girls have to "passively" go after the puck which makes them more vulnerable to injury than if they were just allowed to check. With the athleticism apparent now there really is no reason to not allow some form of modified body-checking.

Well said, but I think the real problem here is the inconsistency with which this type of occurance is called. Different officials in the same game calling it differently and, perhaps even worse, the same official calling it a penalty in period 1, not a penalty in period 3, and then calling it again in OT.

Yes, I hate this. I saw two bad calls made against Bowdoin in the Codfish Bowl when they played Trinity. A Bowdoin defenseman made a really good play on a puck-carrying Trinity forward and was called for tripping when the Trinity player fell to the ice (same forward both times). I can't even count how many times I've seen this happen in a game. Sometimes players just fall battliing for the puck but the officials have a bad habit of calling tripping just because someone goes down. Not that I'm saying that it's easy to referee a game, but sometimes you have to recognize a good defensive play as a good defensive play. Too many games are decided by bad calls.

Was that the penalty that was called and offset in the Codfish bowl for
"diving" called on the offended team and the tripping call on the offending team? I loved that! They'd said they'd do it, but I hadn't seen it called yet, and there it was...I think it was Codfish games
