Great games on the first day of this year's Panther/Cardinal Classic! It has finally stopped snowing and I imagine everyone is staying cozy before we head over to Kenyon for round 2.
The Elmira win sets up a rematch of last year's NCAA final against Amherst, but they had to deal with the pesky Panthers to get there. That game opened with neither team able to generate sustained offense at even strength. Elmira was successful in keeping Midd from breaking out and smoothly transitioning into their offensive zone. Elmira scored on the powerplay when Kivi got an open look from the blueline and rifled a low shot which Bloom initially appeared to have saved but trickled into the net under her pads. Midd was able to make quick thrusts into Elmira ice and had a post on a powerplay before the Kivi goal, but was not able to park forwards at the top of the crease to take advantage of any rebounds.
The second period saw Midd's speed creating opportunities. McNally got in ahead of the D and Sullivan made a nice save on her backhand from the stickside of the crease. Melberg blocked a shot on an Elmira powerplay and was off to the races, but again Sullivan was able to make the save. Midd evened the score with a powerplay goal when Bairos grabbed a rebound off Sullivan's left pad and beat her from the top of the crease inside the gloveside post. Bloom then made a great sliding pad save on DeBus who was in 2x0, had time to deke and was stuffed attempting to slide the puck inside Bloom's stickside post. Elmira took the lead on a nifty pass by Metcalf from low in the left circle to Colehour who was streaking to the top of the crease as Elmira was making a change on the powerplay.
The third period opened with Midd tying things at 2-2, as Strybicki beat Sullivanover her left shoulder with a shot from the high slot; all scoring was on the powerplay. Midd had a couple of excellent chances, including a 2x0 break, shorthanded, that saw a loose puck hanging in the air in the crease, but regulation ended tied at 2-2.
Elmira took advantage of a D turnover forced by aggressive forechecking in back of the Midd goal and Metcalf earned her third assist finding Bressler on the doorstep; she beat Bloom high to her gloveside to win the game.
Amherst looked sharp in the early going against Plattsburgh. Evans scored when she picked up the puck out of a scrum at the top of the crease, took a step away and to the side and then slid a shot on the ice back across the goal inside the far post. Amherst had lots of first period pressure including a Hanlon 1-3 move when she faked wide left, drew the puck inside into the slot and beat Mackrell with a wrist shot high off the gloveside post.
The second period saw the Cardinals adjusting to Amherst breakout and getting more play in the Lord Jeff's zone, but the pace of play was pretty frantic with lots of end to end action on the big ice surface. The thing that is unique in Amherst's play is the way their D jump into the offense and attack without fear. The score was still 1-0 after the second.
Coach Houle took a timeout with about 12 minutes remaining in the third and seemed to inspire the Cardinals. Seconds later, Bowler broke across the blueline with some open space down the right wing on her forehand and blasted a shot from around the faceoff dot beating Murphy cleanly high to her gloveside to tie the score. Amherst was looking at having outplayed Plattsburgh, failing to cash in numerous chances, and a tie game. The Plattsburgh goal seemed to enliven the Lord Jeffs and they furiously attacked. anlon had a couple of shots down low from the left side of the crease and the puck when in back of the net to Vitale and out to Chwick on th eright point. She fed Zukas to her left and from the top of the left faceoff dot Zukas had an open look and beat Mackrell to her gloveside for the game winner.
