2010 Frozen Four - Detroit - Fans Helping Fans Travel Guide

Re: 2010 Frozen Four - Detroit - Fans Helping Fans Travel Guide

Avoid the PeopleMover at all costs. The locals call it the MuggerMover for a reason. You're safer walking the streets alone at night then you are riding the MuggerMover during peek traffic times.

What locals? I've lived downtown for 5 years and ride the DPM every day and almost every night and I've never even seen something of concern.

Re: 2010 Frozen Four - Detroit - Fans Helping Fans Travel Guide

I am shocked at the response from the first 2 editions of the guide I posted...there have been over 300 downloads and 25 emails requesting more information. I added the information some of you asked for. Here is my final edit.

Many people will be arriving tomorrow...we look forward to having all of you!

I too have never had any problems on the PeopleMover.

His logic of it being safer to walk the streets alone is just stupidity...

Higher crime in a controlled access area with a dedicated security force covered with cameras and only 13 places of escape, each with their own security post...yeah, that sounds more dangerous than the wide open streets right.

I think his nickname for the People Mover is pretty cute though.:p

As much as I think Detroit is a complete abomination, I disagree with you 100%. I've ridden the PM a few hundred times over the years and I've never seen a single person harrassed. There are police officers at almost every stop and in fact I've never even heard someone call it the MuggerMover. Downtown Detroit is a safe and relatively fun place.

To anyone that's going to be downtown on Friday for the Tigers opener, it looks like the weather is going to be perfect! **** I'm jealous!

Wow, I don't know what weather forecast you're looking at, but 50 and rain for this Friday sure doesn't sound like perfect weather for opening day to me.

As for the People Mover, the problem with it is that it doesn't go anywhere you want to go. Unless you're going to Greektown, The Renaissance Center, or Joe Louis Arena, none of the other stops are worth stopping for. It's relatively safe though, just don't do it alone at 4 AM, but that's true with any public transportation in any major city at that time.

It doesnt go anywhere for most people, but for out-of-towners that will get lost with all the angled streets it is probably helpful in getting around. Try giving directions from Greektown to the Book Cadillac...it's not that easy.

According to the Detroit Metro Airport site, a luxury sedan service will cost you around $52 to downtown Detroit, and a cab will cost you around $43 to downtown Detroit.

Check out this link for more info and phone numbers to each. Scroll down to the 'Luxury Sedan & Taxi Services' section...

Are taxis avaialble without prepaying? Is cab sharing to downtown Detroit common and doable?

Question: where's the best place in town to get a good, strong, peel-the-paint-off-the-walls cup of coffee?

Re: 2010 Frozen Four - Detroit - Fans Helping Fans Travel Guide

Gotigers, the best coffee in town is Biggby, followed closely by Tim Hortons. Now availability all depends on where you are staying...

50ish and partly sunny the last time I checked is pretty good for Detroit's opener. I've been to several where it was snowing.

Yes taxi's are available without prepaying. Some companies will ask for prepayment though if you are going far enough to reach a certain price.

Unlike most other cities, the majority of cabs in Detroit DO NOT usually end up downtown. As a result, splitting cabs with strangers is not usually as easy as I have noticed in some other places. If you are traveling with others though it is obviously easy and cheap.

If you try to ride the People Mover at 4 AM, you WILL be doing it alone because it stops running at midnight Sunday through Thursday and at 2 AM Friday and Saturday.

Re: 2010 Frozen Four - Detroit - Fans Helping Fans Travel Guide

The Detroit People Mover hours have been extended to 3am for the Frozen Four festivities.

Anyone want to do a 6 or so mile run downtown Friday morning? Mrs. Alfa and I run about a 9:30 pace, and plan on starting from the Book Cadillac, but probably will run down to the riverfront- and may run up to Belle Isle and back.

Re: 2010 Frozen Four - Detroit - Fans Helping Fans Travel Guide

47 and Partly Sunny is perfect for an opening day party!

1 year ago today, April 6, 2009, we had 3 inches of snow fall in Detroit...

Definitely. Up until yesterday, weather.com and the local weather people were all saying low 40's with a chance of rain. 50 and sun will be great. Looks like I'll be going to opening day after all (or at least enjoying the festivities around town).

If anyone enjoys stuff that is off the beaten path, I have something that will blow your mind away...

In 1986 a Detroit artist named Tyree Guyton started "The Heidelberg Project." It was an effort to expose the neglect of both the city and its residents. He has collected stuff found all around the city and turned it into art. It spurred an amazing collection.

There is a home with hundreds of stuffed animals covering it, that were collected from abandoned houses. There are doors that were collected and turned into sculptures. The most recent addition is a sundial created from bricks and bottles collected while cleaning up Belle Isle Park.

I cannot describe how amazing this place is. It's not a museum, and it's not a gallery. It is a living, breathing neighborhood that tells the story of what happens when the people leave...and what they leave behind. Check out the links below...

The Heidelberg Project is located on Heidelberg Street on the East Side of Detroit, about 3 miles from Downtown. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&i...-83.021064&spn=0.007246,0.013797&z=16&iwloc=A

I know several people that live near downtown Detroit and all of them have horror stories about the MuggerMover.
