Yes, several. I know of multiple people who have had their windows smashed in and the entire contents of the car (but not the car itself) stolen.

i'd like a shot at your car. There is a spot right in front of my building, just 2 blocks from Ford Field. Honk twice when you pull up.


Seriously dude, stop trying to scare people away. There is nothing dangerous about visiting Detroit. It might be dangerous to live here, but it's not a dangerous place to visit.

That may be, but all I am doing is reporting real events that have happened to real people... and these are hardly isolated events.

Maybe so, but it's not a pandemic either. You don't have to tell people that if they come to Detroit and park in a surface lot, that their car will be broken into. I had my car radio stolen in Chicago and had my wallet taken on the New York City subway...but that doesn't mean I tell people to "watch out when you park in Chicago or ride the Mugger Rail in NYC." Isolated incidents do occur, but stop painting a place as Baghdad when it's really not like that.

I don't call it that, and I've lived here for five years. I have honestly never heard that until you called it that, and I know dozens of people that live inside the loop of the DPM. But whatever makes you feel good, sitting back in your quiet suburban condo throwing around "what people I know" call things.

Ok guys this is a little random, and very last minute...

i have gotten some emails asking if there are any pub crawls going on for the Frozen Four. Inside Detroit did one this weekend (not hockey themed), but I don't believe it was advertised heavily.

If there is any interest, I would be willing to lead a group of USCHO posters on a "D-Tour" of Downtown Detroit, Friday night. This would be nothing official, just a group of people who are not sure where to go who want to have some fun. Being that it is opening day for the Tigers, it could take on a couple different directions depending on what people are interested in.

I'm open to exploring things other people want to see--I'm in this to show other people a good time. I can enjoy Detroit 51 other weeks of the year. I know what its like to be in a city where you have recommendations, but following through on them is sometimes a struggle...especially in our downtown with all the **** angled streets!

I posted my thoughts on the stadium in the field setup thread (in short, my seats are acceptable but the risers are a disgrace), but I wanted to post my mid-trip thoughts on the area more generally: so far, Detroit is just fine. We've got a nice hotel in Dearborn with plenty of space for our large crew, and had no trouble driving down and parking yesterday ($30 for parking was a little steep, but we were right near Ford Field- I was driving and didn't feel like screwing around driving about for cheaper parking). Cheli's Chili was quite an enjoyable hockey bar for the WI crowd yesterday afternoon, and needless to say we enjoyed our game. Today, various parts of our group found historical, boozy, or gambling sources of amusement, and we enjoyed a good dinner at a Lebanese place here in Dearborn. So, so far so good on the city!

I've lived in the Detroit area all my life. Spent a lot of time in the city. Spent a lot of time with people who spend a lot of time in the city.

I've NEVER heard it called the MuggerMover. Nor have I called it that myself.

Seems to me you're predisposed to not like the City of Detroit, there's no convincing you otherwise, and it's a shame you've used this thread to attempt to scare people in anticipation of their visit to our area.

Hats off to State Dude! You guys put together an awesome support package. I was there for the historic blow out games and had a very pleasant experience. I used this thread for lodging, dining and rental car selection. I stayed at the Dearborn Inn which was a great location central to downtown and close to the airport. Everyone I came in contact with during my brief stay was very helpful. I'm glad the attendance was heavy. I think it was a success even though many people doubted it would work. Thanks again SD for your efforts. I wish everyone still there a safe journey home and see you next season.

You are very welcome. It sounds like you enjoyed your time here, and that makes me very happy. College hockey and Detroit are my two favorite things...when the opportunity arose to combine these two things it was a dream for me. I got to promote college hockey to the people in my town, and I got to promote my town to the college hockey world. In the end I think everyone came out happy...even if your view of the ice was not so great.

Safe travels to all those headed home...come back as often as you like.

This thread is no longer relevant, so it needs to die off...but real quick I have a couple questions from some of the people that came in from out of town.

My company had out of towners fill out over 500 surveys about their visit. Your input has been extremely helpful for us in terms of preparing for future events, including future college hockey at the joe promotions.

In a nutshell, I would like you guys to help me add to our numbers.

Where did you stay? What attractions did you see outside hockey that you enjoyed? Any you didn't like? Would you consider visiting Detroit again? Would you visit without an event or particular reason? Are your perceptions of our city the same or different than when you arrived?

Westin Detroit

Riverwalk (ran it), Greektown, duMachel's (the auction house), NCAA thing in the Ren Cen, Greektown, Historic Fort Wayne, Pewabic Pottery.

Eats- 24 Bistro (in our hotel), American Coney, Laffayette Coney, Astoria Bakery.

I'll leave the like part alone, since we are biased, and normally come down for events- shows, concerts, DIA, etc. We always make time to see stuff.

We stayed @ Hilton Garden (got a room from this thread, actually)

Greektown was fun. Had loose meat with two guys from Boston we met at Cheli's @ Lafayette Coney. Hit Hockeytown Cafe too. We really enjoyed the Eastern Market & would have had BBQ but were still full from Redhawk's in Ann Arbor

We've been to Detroit before for a Tiger's game. I've also been there for a Michigan/UW football game a couple years ago, which is why we didn't hit Henry Ford museum or Greenfield Village. Detroit is a lot like Cleveland where I live currently - both have got a bad rap outside but isn't bad at all.
