2010 Frozen Four - Detroit - Fans Helping Fans Travel Guide

Re: 2010 Frozen Four - Detroit - Fans Helping Fans Travel Guide

I know several people that live near downtown Detroit and all of them have horror stories about the MuggerMover.

All of them? Maybe you are hanging out with the wrong people...according to the DPD annual report there were only 11 incidents reported in people mover stations/trains in 2008 and 9 of those were for purse snatching/pick pocketing. Only 3 of them involved assaults.

That is because of how the Detroit police department works. If a crime happens and you try to report it to the police they will not come to you to help (unless your life is in immediate danger) you have to go to them. I read recently that because of this policy that over 97% of all crimes in the Detroit city limits are never even reported.

Do you work for the Detroit Chamber of Commerce? You must! ;)

This has probably been asked already but what is a fairly cheap and also safe place to park?

I'm not sure how the rates are compared to other big cities...I know NYC charges like $50 for a day and I'd rather avoid paying that much if possible. Any suggestions? Or do I not have to worry about ridiculous fees?

Parking structures nearby are $15 (which to me is outrageous, but far less then the $50 you worry about), they are near the Fox Theatre and Hockeytown Cafe. Don't park in those temporary lots that only pop up on game days, if you do there is a good chance your car will be missing all of its contents when you get back to it.

15-20 is reasonable to part for the entire day. Parking downtown is pretty safe. If you want to park very cheap, go to MGM Grand where parking is completely free. Pull in, pull out...no validation required. It is about 6-8 blocks from Ford Field.

Wow, I park in those lots for over 60 Tigers games per summer (season ticket holder here) and have never once had my car broken into. You know people that have had bad experiences there??

When I go to Tiger games I park at the VFW hall on Woodward and Temple. They charge $10 and they have guys watching the lot. Good guys and a good cause. It's about 8-10 blocks from Comerica Park, but it's a straight shot to the Lodge (US-10) from there. However, I don't know if they'll be doing such a thing for this weekend's hockey.

I have already had calls from 4 USCHO members in town...2 of them went to Roast for dinner and the other two spent the afternoon at the DIA or Science Center. They all really enjoyed their time but one concern I heard was the lack of place to buy an umbrella. I hope to hear more from you guys...it's really great to hear the good and bad experiences.

For those that need quick needs or pharmacy style stuff...there is a CVS on Woodward just north of Campus Martius Park and also on Level 2 of the Ren Cen. There is also a CVS and Walgreens on Jefferson near the Omni Riverfront, and a Rite Aid on Woodward at Canfield.

I'm certainly not down there 60 times a summer, but every Tigers/Lions game I have been to I've parked in one of them and never had a problem either. Just don't leave an ipod sitting out on the seat  .

Re: 2010 Frozen Four - Detroit - Fans Helping Fans Travel Guide

I parked in an outdoor lot today and had no problem. Every other time I've been down there I've parked on the street and never had a problem. Just don't be stupid about stuff that you leave visible in your car.

Also, for people still worried about safety, there's going to be a pretty strong undercover police presence at the stadium and surrounding area this weekend.

So we opened our phones to public calls at 10am...so far we have had calls from 8 badgers, 6 random fans, 4 RIT fans and 2 Miami fans.

6 of the 8 calls from Badger fans were looking for suggestions on bars. and I thought MSU had a drinking problem...

Yes, several. I know of multiple people who have had their windows smashed in and the entire contents of the car (but not the car itself) stolen.
