2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

Re: 2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

We got two census packets at our condo. One addressed to Unit 4 and one to Unit 12. Our address is the latter, but according to the county our unit is the fourth unit in its building so all of our property tax info says Unit 4. I haven't looked inside the census packet yet, but I presume I can just toss one of them.

Maybe check with your neighbors in the actual unit 4 to see if they got theirs or not.

I moved out of Cheyenne just after getting the letter that says the census form is on the way, and now I live in Anchorage, AK.

Am I gonna get thrown in jail? :p What happens with my form? Will it be forwarded onto Anchorage?

They send it to addresses not people. At least mine was addressed to occupant.

As Ralph notes, the forms go to addresses, not people. It's supposed to be a snapshot of where people live on April 1. So, whatever address you'll be living at on April 1 should also get a Census form, and you can fill it out then. If they don't have one, you can find a Questionnaire Assistance Center, or call their telephone QAC at 1-866-872-6868.

So, whomever moves in to your old place in Cheyenne gets to fill out the form. And if nobody lives there, then it (accurately) gets marked as a vacant unit.

Re: 2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

Filled mine out and send it back today.

Very simple...why don't people do this again?

Because even though the census is a function mandated by the U.S. Constitution, it's the gubmint trying ta take der jerbs (or guns, or money, or whatever).

Derek,
This will be the 4th one of these I have filled out. I was SHOCKED that all it asked was who was living at that address, their age, their birthday, and a question about their race. Past ones were much longer and asked questions which had nothing to do with counting how many people there are in the nation.

They decided to do a statistical analysis for other information now. Originally, it was released very early last year that the White House wanted to do the same for the actual census itself this year, due to varying reasons that I forget at the moment. Eventually it came down to this compromise - the population count would go out to everyone and the other indicative data behind the makeup of the nation would be a statistical analysis.

So, we actually have two homes, no one lives in the second one (it's under renovation) do I just put 0 on the form that we get for the second house and mail it back in? I ask, because I really don't want waste taxpayer dollars by having someone come to the house later.

I think that falls under the "where you live on April 1" qualifier of what they ask. If nobody's living there, then it's very reasonable to submit zero as the answer. Perhaps a note should be inserted, but I'm not sure about that and it may cause issue with the automated processors that the Census Bureau likely uses to read the results. If there's a number on the census form, then it may be best to simply call that number and explain the situation.

I have 2 houses on the property, the census guy comes and knocks on the door, gives me the form for the other house. I said its the wrong address and that no one lives in the other house. He says ok, comes back with the right address and leaves the other on the door knob of the other house. Its still sitting there. Why does someone need to hand deliver the form?. I assume he did the whole town?

They used to send the long form to about 20% of the population and extrapolate from that based on the short form that everyone receives.

Now, they've scrapped the long form entirely, and instead gather all that deeper information through the American Community Survey. The ACS still only goes to a smaller selection of households, but it happens every year and they released the data on a rolling basis.

So, we actually have two homes, no one lives in the second one (it's under renovation) do I just put 0 on the form that we get for the second house and mail it back in? I ask, because I really don't want waste taxpayer dollars by having someone come to the house later.

Yes, you just put 0 people live here for the second house and send it back.

90% of the US population gets the form in the mail. The rest are counted in a variety of methods. In some areas, that means they do indeed go door to door.

http://blogs.census.gov/2010census/2010/02/the-four-principal-ways-we-conduct-the-census-.html

Mailout/Mailback The vast majority of households (about 90% of the population) will receive a census form in the mail via the US Postal Service. This partnership with the USPS has continued since 1970, when the first mailout/mailback US Census was conducted. We ask that you fill it out and mail it back by April 1.

Update/Leave In areas of the country (about 9% of the population) where mail is not delivered to residences uniformly, census staff will visited each housing unit, update our list of addresses, and leave a census form package in a plastic bag at the entrance door of the unit. This is the technique will we use in the Gulf Coast areas that were heavily affected by hurricane damage and are in the middle of their recovery.

Update/Enumerate Just like in remote Alaska, there are parts of the US (about 1% of the population) that both don’t uniformly receive mail at their residence and are far from any town. Some of these have demonstrated very low return rates of questionnaires in the past. In these areas, we will visit each housing unit and take a face-to-face interview with those in the household.

Large Military Installations At big military installations (e.g., Fort Bragg, NC) field work is coordinated with a military representative, and the Census staff is escorted to each housing unit to deliver the questionnaires. The military representative ensures that all questionnaires are returned.

And a map of which process is used in which area - The blue areas are mailout/mailback; the tan areas are update/leave; the green areas are update/enumerate.

Re: 2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

I got two letters telling me I would be getting forms, and yesterday I got two forms. Both addressed the same. I'm only filling out one. Do these people not know how to dedupe?

Re: 2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

I got mine today, it took 2 minutes to fill out for a household of 4. But now Obama has a list of 4 white people, so it will only be a matter of time before we're sent to the camps. Because whites are oppressed, y'see.
