2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

Re: 2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

I'm still trying to figure out the rationale for spending $42M to mail out something saying that you'll get something else in the mail.
I was wondering the same thing. My wife and I each got one on the same day, to boot!

Re: 2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

My wife and I asked that exact question when we got the notice in the mail the other day. A shame money is spent so poorly by the feds.

If spending that money increases the response rate and saves money via door to door enumeration, how is that poor spending?

Re: 2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

What would happen if you only want to answer the number of people in your household? Will they still come to your door later?

You'll be branded as a "terrorist" and forced to watch American Idol re-runs for 3-5 years.

Any money the government spends in this country is poor spending. If we were doing Iraq's census for them then it would be fine to mail out the notices.

It's another thing to whine and posture about, they should be happy.

I got a visit from the in-person census guy about 25 years ago in Boston. The "long interview" (and it was long, about 30 minutes) was fascinating in the kinds of questions they were asking.

I can't imagine being one of those guy now. They can't be paid enough to have to listen to the barbershop b.s. they must put up with from the "I hates the Gummint, where's my check?" types, assuming they're not actually assaulted by Beck's brown shirts.

Just under-count the south and save the country a lot of trouble.

Dammit! Another far left pinko communist attempt to inject the gubmint into our lives! Everybody knows the "census" is really a crypto-socialist plot to make everybody bow down to the state.

MinnFan, dtp, plante, etc - did I get that right? :D

Re: 2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

Last fall/early winter I received a census form that asked a lot of detailed questions regarding our household. I was suspicious and looked it up and it turned out to be legit. Although it wasn't really intrusive, it took me quite a while to fill it out and there were a couple of mailings and a phone call to insure that I did it. For some reason I thought that would let me off the hook for this one since I already did the earlier one. Apparently I have to fill out the short form as well.

Yes, you received the American Community Survey.

As the name implies, it is a survey, not a true census - so it only goes to a selection of the total population. The ACS happens every year, and is indeed much longer and asks more detailed questions. Responses to the ACS are then calibrated based on the total count numbers from the decennial census.

The Census Bureau does several surveys like that all the time, they collect all sorts of information on everything from the unemployment rate to work commuting data. It's all quite valuable stuff, not just to the government, but to private companies looking to do market research, as well as academics.

Anyway, yes, you still need to do the Census when it arrives. It's going to be much shorter, I promise you.

LOL - it couldn't be much longer. Either way, I don't have a problem with them :)

They'll have to convince everyone that they're not part of an ACORN plot to find the most delicious Christian babies for Obama and his Muslim followers to feast upon.

Still have to wonder if the law the way it's written is unconstitutionally broad. But, that's more research than I have the capability of doing right now.

Hey! Not everyone who lives in the south is a rednecks who cannot talk and just want to leech off of the government. (some of us support ourselves and can usually spell. :p ;) )

Personally, I can't wait until the census is over. I am so sick of the TV commercials.
