Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage
Kind of off topic, but It really burns me that more than anything, anchorage wants a new arena when what they really need are better academics. They don't yet have a doctorate program, and half of their masters degrees are "in cooperation with" uaf (meaning the students come to fairbanks to do real learning!). It just seems to me that academics should come first.
I realize were all sports fans here, and not to say anchorage doesn't have good learning opportunities, but their degree listings for high-end programs reads like a listing of degrees from technical and vocational schools. When it comes to new sports arena for anchorage vs biosciences for fairbanks, how is there any competition? I hear there is a huge pushback in anchorage against UAF's bioscience building so that the money could instead be dedicated to building a sports arena. Do any of you anchorites think that is "right"?
I realize UAA has made great strides in their on-campus facilities in recent years, with huge amounts of new construction. Now the faculty needs to step up and that will take time, but shouldn't that be the priority? Lets face it, the sullivan is probably a better arena than the carlson, and I think many of you have a "build it and they will come" mentality. No doubt, it absolutely can't hurt, but a new arena doesn't make a new program.
We’re getting rid of Mark Hamilton, that and the legislator’s who want a new Field house and Hockey practice rink on campus at UAA …………should be about 100 million . Thanks for asking.
