2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

We’re getting rid of Mark Hamilton, that and the legislator’s who want a new Field house and Hockey practice rink on campus at UAA …………should be about 100 million . Thanks for asking.

Kind of off topic, but It really burns me that more than anything, anchorage wants a new arena when what they really need are better academics. They don't yet have a doctorate program, and half of their masters degrees are "in cooperation with" uaf (meaning the students come to fairbanks to do real learning!). It just seems to me that academics should come first.

I realize were all sports fans here, and not to say anchorage doesn't have good learning opportunities, but their degree listings for high-end programs reads like a listing of degrees from technical and vocational schools. When it comes to new sports arena for anchorage vs biosciences for fairbanks, how is there any competition? I hear there is a huge pushback in anchorage against UAF's bioscience building so that the money could instead be dedicated to building a sports arena. Do any of you anchorites think that is "right"?

I realize UAA has made great strides in their on-campus facilities in recent years, with huge amounts of new construction. Now the faculty needs to step up and that will take time, but shouldn't that be the priority? Lets face it, the sullivan is probably a better arena than the carlson, and I think many of you have a "build it and they will come" mentality. No doubt, it absolutely can't hurt, but a new arena doesn't make a new program.

I blame that ***** Sarah Palin for screwing us over 4 years ago on that arena, and the way our current economic situation is for our state.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

here's a question for all uaa & uaf fans about the governor's cup, what if the schools decided to do what Minnesota & Wisconsin do for there Border battle Trophy with the governor's cup? basically the schools get points for victories in certain sports they play against each other (Hockey, BBall, VBALL, XC, Skiing) and awarding each victory with a point for one school?

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

@seawolfpunk, Texas A&M and Texas do the same thing. It's called the Lone Star Showdown. Personally I like it; it's a fun way to bring the lesser watched sports into the fold. As an alum I'd be open to an idea like that.

UAA doesn't have any doctorate programs, or more masters because Hamilton didn't want any more at UAA. I could try and search the ADN archives, but when I was a student there, they talked about getting a doctorate in biology but Hamilton figured that the one in the banks was failing and that he didn't want to have two failing programs. UAA would gladly more programs, but support from Hamilton never seemed to be there.

That would be great for UAA, considering recently we have had their number in hockey, mens and womens basketball, mens and womens XC, and splitting on skiing and v-ball.

Any pushback on the Life Sciences facility seems to be coming mostly from the hardcore UAA loyalists. Anchorage at large is generally oblivious to anything that happens north of Chugiak (save for the occasional Wasilla drug bust), thanks mostly to the stinkbomb media outlets around here. ADN calling itself "Alaska's News Source" is a daily funny to me.

UAA will get its new sports palace eventually, though. It does need a better alternative to what it has now, and Anchorage has too much legislative power for it to not happen eventually, either via a brand new arena or (hypothetically speaking) a major upgrade to the Sullivan Arena, which in its current state is a complete dump. And quite frankly, I was surprised that the Life Sciences facility won the battle this time around.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

One non-sports question for anybody in Fairbanks, how are the roads up there right now? I've heard it's pretty bad thanks to a little icestorm yesterday. I am debating whether or not I want to drive up for the Saturday game.

Yes exactly. UAA gets zero support from the UA regents and the one person who tried to change things was forced out.

If you haven't read the post on Donald's blog about the sports complex, use the link below and check it out. Very interesting information.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

UA_ jumped up to number 11 in the PWR, so the Gov Cup could decide UA_'s faith in getting an at large bid in the NCAA's. Just food for thought.

According to the UAA student paper, the Seawolves are 46-19-5 against UA_ at the Sully. Overall record is a 80-48-11 advantage.
