2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

It could be worse......
Here are ten little known college mascots throughout history.

10. The Yale Poison Ivy
9. The Northern Kentucky University Kissing Cousins
8. The Runnin' Cowards of the University of Paris
7. The Slippery Rock Lubricators
6. The Syracuse Freezing Yerazzoffs
5. The Steamers of Cleveland State
4 The Arkansas Bubbas
3. The MIT Pocket Protectors
2. The Humming Kazoos of the Berklee College of Music
1. The Caffeinated Jitters of Seattle University

Or have 2½ of the proud products of the Failure Factories who would be dumped from tryouts to Country Bear Jamboree.

Too funny, but that doesn't make our joke of a mascot any easier to swallow. The "groups" that made this decision need to eat some crow and bring back our original mascot, the one the fans want to see, and the one that doesn't scare kids.

Sullivan Arena Welcomes the Glass Bangers from the North with some Rules and Behavior habits that normal people are taught at an early age.

Yea the UAa players might get startled if the hear anyone cheering for them!

"...Would most Seawolf fans (and Nanook fans for that matter) rather see two three game sets for the Governor's Cup or a tournament with teams like RPI and Mercyhurst?..."

I see you started a poll about this also. Interesting point of view. If you're disappointed with the caliber of teams, think how Michigan and Robert Morris must feel. :)

Michigan, Mercyhurst, Robert Morris, and RPI gave us all we could handle in the early season tournaments. Much more beneficial than "four more" games against the Seawolves. The only down side is it's going to take us a just a little longer to even our all time win-loss record against the C-Woofs.

I see your point about playing 4 teams at the beginning of the year instead of playing UAA. However, UA_ didn't even score a goal last year in the cup series, so if you did play UAA four times, your odds of scoring may have increased.

A little longer? UA_ is 48-80-11 against UAA all time, so what your saying that in the next 16 years, UA_ will beat UAA every game(16 years on a 2 game schedule) and that is considered little longer? I will wait for hell to freeze over first.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Would most Seawolf fans (and Nanook fans for that matter) rather see two three game sets for the Governor's Cup or a tournament with teams like RPI and Mercyhurst? I can't imagine this is even a question. Dr. Cobb has ruined traditions (throwing fish on the ice and changing the mascot with NO STUDENT INPUT amongst others) and ruined the Governor's Cup.

Six is WAY too many. Maybe that was OK back in the day as independents (before my time), but now? That would eliminate any chance of playing anybody other than the same dozen or so teams, year after year. Playing other teams outside of your yearly group is good for the team (makes them play against different systems and styles, in theory helping them grow as a team), and I as a fan enjoy seeing them as well. Variety is the spice of life, or something.

And, while I'm no expert on the PWR, I do know that non-conference games can impact it significantly. Do well in your non-conference schedule and you might flip some comparisons at the end of the season. However, if all 6 non-conference games are against the same opponent, then you'll kinda be at their mercy based on how well they do in their own conference. Maybe it wouldn't drag you from a #1 seed to not even making the tournament, but it might make the difference between being the last team in, or not making it at all.

I do kinda miss the 4 game series, but I can live with 2. Actually, my biggest issue with the 2 game series is that it's harder to justify taking a day off work just to drive down, go to the game, sleep, and drive right back up. Easier to make a weekend of it when there were two games in Anchorage. At least when the Saturday game is in Anchorage I don't have to take time off work, but it's still more rushed than I'd like.

Regarding the early season tournaments, I think they're great. Nice chance to get a mix of different opponents early in the season, both for the experience for the team, and the entertainment value as a fan. And, while RPI and Mercyhurst aren't necessarily world-beaters, I'm glad I got to see them, along with UConn, Maine, Northeastern and Robert Morris. However, I can see how you could probably do without seeing those last two, and Michigan ;)

I do agree with you on the new mascot. That thing is horrible

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

It's not Shyiak they need to get rid of, he's been an outstanding coach. They need to get rid of Dr. Cobb.

Dr. Cobb was sipping mint juleps in Georgia in the 80's when I was doing everything I could to get into the jam packed Sullivan Arena to see the Seawolves play. It's time for a change in leadership. Lets send Dr. Cobb back to Dixie!

You are an idiot. On behalf of every sane UAA fan: ****.

a) Dr. Cobb hired Shyiak.
b) Hill got rid of the fish tossing
c) Why does UAA and UAF play in each other tournaments? They have to. NCAA rules state that to get the exemption they must play a team from Alaska.

Tell us how you really feel…….
Furthermore ….
d) Life at UAA will be enhanced this summer after Mark Hamilton has departed.

Calm down, no need to call fellow fans names all though you are correct in your listed points. On another note, I dread this series as we have been playing ourselves down in the standings instead of improving and moving up. We give up shorties like there's no tomorrow. Goaltending I know is everyone's favorite subject or suspect I guess you could say...let's see something this weekend boys. How bout it?

Nice to see somebody admits to working in _airbanks as most like to boast about their subsistence lifestyle forging at the dump.

To some it may look horrible but unlike the 2 ½ mascots up north who act horrible.
With frenziedly kicking, pounding on the glass and side boards behind the visiting goaltenders or following the visiting coaching staff with nonstop beating on the Plexiglas that is marked up so bad that it is beyond repair. The student section boards have been beaten on for so long and to disrepair that they went with the typical _airbanks repair “plan b” bungee cords because the typical _airbanks repair “plan A” …duck tape and blue tarps wouldn’t work and would have to be replaced every game as some local would take it home for roofing.

I know there is a major outrage in the ‘banks because the security staff is not allowing fans to further damage the Plexiglas and supports that has been going on for so long that they think it is the law of the land.
First it was outlawing hockey sticks to bang on the wooden floors and now this. They are so mean, they must fly all the workforce up from Anchorage for every game.

Also if your 2 ½ mascots are driving down for Friday’s game they better take the Richardson Hwy as they might have a problem getting through Houston.

We give up shorties like there's no tomorrow.

13 of them!
I don't think that is going to be a issue this weekend though. We've only scored 1 shorthanded goal all year and secondly the thing that I think this series is going to come down to, UAa will be on the PK alot more than the PP.

UAa is #1 in penalties taken and UA is #58. And the CCHA mandate for this year has been the CTH penalties, much like the CFB was a few years ago.

UA_ jumped up to number 11 in the PWR, so the Gov Cup could decide UA_'s faith in getting an at large bid in the NCAA's. Just food for thought.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

We're getting new glass and boards next year. Part of a $5m project. Your getting???????? :D

We’re getting rid of Mark Hamilton, that and the legislator’s who want a new Field house and Hockey practice rink on campus at UAA …………should be about 100 million . Thanks for asking.

Yep right now we are in. That makes these games more important than the broken cup. I think we have to win decisively to.

If we had 6 games against UAa our PWR wouldn't be as good.

The WCHA has been calling the contact to the head very tightly this season as well.
