Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

quick line changes are even more important when the team is playing on a larger rink (like at umass and unh). The home team is used to the ice size, but long shifts can drain the visiting team. Even with the short shifts this game, they still had an attrocious 3rd period.

Moral victories (like "we had a great 2nd period" or "we really cut down angles well") are great when playing against teams like bc, maine, etc. But when it comes to playing fellow bottom dwellers, the team needs the type of victory that comes with points in the standings. Now they're 12 games into league play (44.44% of league games) and are in a hole. Good to be done the league slate for the semester. My guess is we'll see both goalies against princeton next weekend. Hopefully the break will bring speedy recovery to campbell, budd, whatever happened to ruhwedel last night, and anyone else. The first games after the break will be very important if the team wants to make the playoffs (@unh, @northeastern, umass (nesn - hopefully with a good crowd for tv;)), @umass). They've had time to gel together, understand the speed of the game, and get to know their opponents. Put some more shots on goal and they have the ability to string together some wins.

Congrats to the field hockey team on their national championship. I know absolutely nothing about field hockey but watched the game with no sound while listening to the hockey game. Great season for the team.

b-o-r-i-n-g also!

Gotta love the Dump and Change. If Lowell ever gets numbers into the zone I'm gonna have a stroke.

In other non-ice hockey news, because I don't think I can talk UML hockey at this point, the men and women's basketball teams take on Merrimack this Saturday at the Tsongas. 5pm for the men, 7pm for the women. Don't know much about the women's team but the men are 4-2 and Merrimack is 5-1. Some great games between these two teams last year, a sold-out win at Volpe for Lowell in the NE-10 semifinals and a tough loss in the NCAA regionals. Hope some of you come out for this..

Also, kind of a crappy time, but the field hockey team is having a celebration rally at the Tsongas on Friday at 3.

Just what this team needs....more injuries! From the radio show, Caveney is out for the year with a torn ACL, Ruhwedel is out for this weekend, and Cey re-injured his groin and is out for the weekend. Blaise mentioned that at practice today they only had 11 forwards and 6 d-men.

do we have this problem more than others (over the years) or is it the myopia of only looking at our team? What of the fringe roster players... do they make up the 17?

You know a team has an injury bug problem when coach goes down with 4 or 5 broken ribs suffered in practice. Tough break for Caveney, kid plays his heart out and for the second year in a row gets cut down by a faulty knee.

That being said, somehow I am sorta optimistic about this team starting the new year. We should be more healthey come January 7, Blaise mentioned Campbell skated some in practice so that a good sign, has anyone heard anything about Budd? If I recall correctly he went down in the Vermont game (11/5) and havent heard anything since then...But getting Soup back for this team is gonna be HUGE, the team kinda looks like a ship with no captain whose young crew gets really high on positives and really low on negatives, I think Soup can have a calming affect on the whole bench. Also we miss him on the dot and he shoots the puck on net (he is tied for 5th on the team in shots on goal and has only played 6 games....the 4 guys in front of him have played 16).

But yeah, good luck to anyone going to Princeton this weekend, just a reminder they have the coldest rink in college hockey so bundle up.

That makes two of us.

Hopefully they put up a respectable performance this weekend and rest up/heal for a nasty start to the new year. @UNH, @Northeastern, UMass, @UMass, @Merrimack, @BC.

Do the Hockey East schedule makers hate Lowell? The start of the season was bad enough and then they put together that schedule.

That is a nasty start but it does balance out afterwards in late January/early February. We have five out of six games at home, including a stretch of single games on the weekends of the 29th, 5th, and 12th. Recall that from November 5th to December 4th, they only had one "road" game where they didn't have to leave the Merrimack Valley. The 2-5 home record in HE games this semester put them into a gigantic hole and their resultant position makes it even more difficult. Had we won either the NU and/or Merrimack game, it wouldn't be as bad.

To some extent, the Merrimack, UNH, and BC games are gravy. The focus games during that stretch are the NU and UMA games, since we will have to either displace them and/or PC to make the playoffs. UVM isn't going anywhere, so for now I'm not worried about them. If this team is going to have any realstic shot at the HE playoffs, they need to beat NU to even the season series, and take three points from UMA. If the HE losing streak continues, the numbers are going to start to be too high to overcome. Hopefully, BU can do us a favor and give NU another loss, BU leads 4-3 now after two. I don't want to see UMA take any points in Orono on Sunday.

Before we get there, Princeton should be the only concern this weekend. Even with the injuries, they need to come away with something positive. I'll be tickled pink with a single point and it will be an early Christmas present if they come out with a win.

You know its a bad season when longtime fans would be "Tickled pink with a one point weekend" even if its a non-league game.

According to Blaise, Matt Ferreira has been out of practice all week too.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

I heard from a friend that Wil Rayner isn't with the team anymore, which isn't thoroughly surprising.

Yes, he's no longer on the roster on the UML site. I believe Blaise said during the radio show that they may bring in a couple more defensemen for next season. Makes sense with Rayner gone. What a season so far...

Nah. We will keep this thread on page one or two for the rest of the season as we are a sadistic bunch of fans!

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

This maybe isn't the time or place but does anyone else have a problem with Chaz Scoggins? He is horrible on the radio as he can't put two coherent sentences together and is even worse walking around an area with his terrible Hawaiian shirts. Bob Eliis is a professional when he calls the games but I feel Chaz thinks he is the greatest thing since sliced bread as he gets to be the official scorer for the Red Sox once in a while.

I saw Chaz stumbling around Mullins last Saturday and it wasn't pretty.

Just because I don't have enough misery in my life, anyone know if there's a vid feed for the game tonight?
