Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

And of course, after scoring a goal in the last seconds of a period ... UML gives up one 50 seconds into the third, losing 3-2.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

BTW... since November 1st Field Hockey scored 34 (echoing back to an earlier post on "who would score more")... through... ummm... right now as we are losing 2-4, ice hockey has 18.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Another atrocious period for Lowell. Now losing 5-2. What a total loss of a season.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

I heard the first~ awful. Had to go somewhere and listened to the last of the 3rd~awful. Bob doesn't even sound like a homer anymore. Can't find much to be positive about even with the spin machine on. :(

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Just came back from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The good company and good Otter Creek Black IPA were the highlights of the afternoon, unfortunately speaking from a River Hawk hockey point of view.

The first period was an absolute embarassment as the River Hawks struggled mightly on the not-so-quite Olympic 200x95 sheet. The one guy you don't want with the puck (T.J. Syner) flew by a hurt Chad Ruhwedel and put a shot far side on Carr whom didn't even move as it appeared he thought [the puck] was going wide. On an standard sheet, it would have but he learnt the hard way the angles are far different on bigger ice at this level. They lost every battle, every loose puck, and Amherst at times looked like they were on the power play in the first period and to a lesser extent in the third.

Amherst got into trouble with some very lazy penalities on the open ice in the second period which settled the River Hawks down a bit. We actually had a pretty good second period overall and significantly outplayed the Minuteman. Both of the goals were highlight-quality.

However, the third period was very simliar to the Merrimack game where the Minuteman came out flying and Lowell had no answers. Once the third goal for the Minuteman was scored, that was it. Lowell did have more offensive chances and Dainton came up with a couple of key saves when the score was still 3-2. While Lowell got more shots and had a bit more life than the Merrimack game, the Minuteman had complete control of the period and there was really no question about the outcome of the game after the fourth goal.

Carr did his best to keep the game somewhat respectable, while beat pretty badly on the first goal, not much could have been done on the others. Personally, I think we were fortunate it wasn't a lot worse. While I was pleased that they made quite the effort to tie it after the first period, one couldn't help to be a bit saddened by the outcome of the third. With Amherst having four games in hand and UVM three, we may be digging a hole which is going to be very difficult to overcome.

Les, the only positive things I can say...

Campbell, Budd, and the rest of the injured River Hawks can't come back soon enough.

Congradulations to the 2010 UML Field Hockey Team!!!! NCAA D-II National Champions!!

I think Jerry Mouse said it best.......GULP!

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Ruhwedel spent the entire 2nd and 3rd period near the Lowell entrance to the ice in shorts holding a large bag of ice on his thigh.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

I made the trek to Amherst. A few bullet points:

1). Amherst dominated.
2). Carr is going to be good as he made some excellent saves.
3). The Lowell D is awful.
4). Lowell has no offense.
5). Mullins is an awful place to watch hockey and has the worst ice in North America.

I was in Blaise's corner until I watched the UNH game on Thursday and the debacle Saturday afternoon.

Why do we change lines every 50 seconds? Why does Blaise persist on changing lines when we have a 2 on 2 heading into the offensive zone?

We are young and we suck. Hey Blaise: Your system isn't working! Let the boys skate and make plays. God knows we give up odd man rushes when we dump and chase so why no let the boys crash the net and shoot?

Changing lines that often is what you are supposed to do. Short bursts of intense work. The problem is we have nothing developing to get the guys in the zone. They work to get it out, dump, rinse, wash, repeat.

I agree, ideally shifts should be under a minute as if you are skating hard you will be spent at that point, tired players ater a minute in the defensive zone against fresh legs leads to opposition goals.

Quick line changes are even more important when the team is playing on a larger rink (like at UMass and UNH). The home team is used to the ice size, but long shifts can drain the visiting team. Even with the short shifts this game, they still had an attrocious 3rd period.

Moral victories (like "we had a great 2nd period" or "we really cut down angles well") are great when playing against teams like BC, Maine, etc. But when it comes to playing fellow bottom dwellers, the team needs the type of victory that comes with points in the standings. Now they're 12 games into league play (44.44% of league games) and are in a hole. Good to be done the league slate for the semester. My guess is we'll see both goalies against Princeton next weekend. Hopefully the break will bring speedy recovery to Campbell, Budd, whatever happened to Ruhwedel last night, and anyone else. The first games after the break will be very important if the team wants to make the playoffs (@UNH, @Northeastern, UMass (NESN - hopefully with a good crowd for TV;)), @UMass). They've had time to gel together, understand the speed of the game, and get to know their opponents. Put some more shots on goal and they have the ability to string together some wins.

Congrats to the field hockey team on their national championship. I know absolutely nothing about field hockey but watched the game with no sound while listening to the hockey game. Great season for the team.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

UML should go back to the red jerseys. Or at the very least wear red shorts and switch where red and blue are on their socks.

this is a fan more than anything else, its really a kick in the *** when you finally get a break and turn up ice and its time to change... of course, if I'm not paying attention then I won't realize that's because the other team is changing as well... nevertheless, when you see an opportunity change into a line change its frustrating.
