Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Hockey Legend Jim Craig to Support Nephew Craig Charron's Charity at Tsongas Center Friday Night.

Does anyone know if the Hawks will be wearing a third jersey this season? Last Friday night I noticed the merchandise stand had a blue jersey for sale.

At some point, we are going back to blue as the primary color. Don't know exactly when or if the red will become the third jersey.

And the #2 Field Hockey team takes on probably it's last tough battle of the regular season tonight as they head to #6 Stonehill. UML is 5-0 in conference, 15-0 overall, and Stonehill is 7-0 in conference, 11-4 overall. They did play each other earlier this season in Lowell (4-0 UML win) but that was a non-conference game.
Another ho-hum 4-0 win for UML Field Hockey. Amazing season so far.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Missed most of the week on some business travel, but very happy to be back in time to listen to the games this weekend.

Article in the Lowell Sun today about the renovations to the Tsongas. Nothing particularly new to anyone who's been following on USCHO/Renovation Blog/been to a game, but if nothing else will hopefully push a causal observer to go to a game to check it out.

It's a full weekend in Hockey East play. The weekend preview on the Hockey East website states that, "BU has scored eight of its 17 goals in the first period this year and have allowed only one goal in the second frame." So if Lowell can get through the first period even, there might be a chance to get some points. Not that that's happened yet, but here's to hoping. Providence also plays Amherst twice this weekend. If only there was a way for both teams to get zero points in the series, that would be fantastic.

Finally, a quick question. Has anyone been to the new Talon Club? I've heard a lot about the Pavilion Club, the scoreboard, and the new concessions (both good and bad), but haven't heard too much about the Talon Club. Just want to catch a vibe about what it's like in there.

Still think two points this weekend is possible. If Carr can step up a little, Boulanger can get some scoring support, and the freshmen continue to work as they have been, I can see stealing one from BU.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

All I can ask (and expect) ... just keep getting better, each and every weekend.

I witnessed somebody eating fried dough tonight.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Brutal game to listen to last night. It seemed like every good point for the team was matched with some destructive mistake that negated anything good.

Lowell FINALLY has a game where it does not give up a PPG
.....however.....
The team goes -2 on its own PP opportunities

Boulanger gets the start and makes some great saves
.....however.....
He takes 5 minutes off at the beginning of the 2nd period and gives up 3 goals

Arnold just misses a great scoring opportunity to take a 1st period lead
.....however.....
He gets angry then stops skating on a play soon after that leads to BU's 1st goal.

Fried dough is back
.....however.....
It's not as good as it should be (so I hear):p.

Getting points this weekend is not going to be any easier in Boston tonight, but it's still possible.

It was even more brutal to watch...

Lowell gave up another SHG to BU. A very careless turnover at the Lowell blue line that lead to a 2-1 that was too easy. I had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn't last year because it looks almost exactly the like one of the two SHG BU's had at the Tsongas.

None of the goals were on Boulanger...pylons could have hit those open nets as Lowell looked like a pee-wee team in the second period. They were so far lost it wasn't funny. In fact. Boulanger probably saved the game from becoming 8-1 or 10-1.

Millan played well but left some tasty treats hanging around at times. The problem this team continues to have it that they can't finish.

I think Parker called off the dogs in the third period, especially where there was almost a fight after the game was very decided. Sad it was't a better showing, there were 4100+ last night but a lot of them took off after BU's fifth goal and half the students left after the second period.

As far as fried dough, wouldn't know. Can't stand it and the smell make me nauseous. Then again, so did that second period

Agree with John~ Bou was amazing. The team had the biggest, most mind blowing lapse in the 2nd period. First period showed great promise.

YIPPEE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now we can have that true family and hockey experience that has been missing since Marty Meehan became Chancellor and set his sites on building his Empire. If you sense sarcasm then you earn a gold star.

Does anyone think it's even remotely "odd" that the only way we can have a family atmosphere is to have high fat, high carb food served "for the children". You can see A LOT of irresponsibility done by adults making just one walk around the arena. But that's a whole other social issue we don't need to get into.

And before you all flame me for stating the truth - NO I don't think having a beer stand every 10 feet is the right thing also - this coming from someone who likes beer.

GENERAL FACT - at best, only 20% of the fan base attending a hockey game are students so the arena is more for the community and NOT just the college community.

Now onto the game - ugly but let's just hope the team keeps playing hard and stays positive. I love their effort and it's important for them to have our support.

To the students who stayed the whole game - Nice Job !!
To the students who left early after Lowell fell behind 5-0 - Not Nice

DISCLAIMER - anyone who has Blaise's cell phone or considers him a "pal" cannot comment on my theory that Blaise has no intention on balancing the classes out.

This is 100% on Blaise. Actions speak louder than words and for him to have made zero progress in balancing the classes isn't right. If this is his plan (stack the team every 3-4 years as the only way to get into the NCAA Tourney) then just be honest. A lot of little changes could have been made over the years to fix this and we are still in the same predicament we were when he started.

Sincerely,

UML's intermission entertainment blows away the rest of HE. Whoopie pie eating contest and player dance-off for the win.

Didn't mean to rag on one of the few bright spots for the night, then. I guess that's a disadvantage of only being able to listen to the game audio and read the box score. It will be nice if these "learning experience" games can get the team good experience now and can translate into better play and real points very soon.

Hopefully the team got all the mistakes out last night, start screening the goalie and hitting the net, maybe put in a few of those rebounds, and defensive zone coverage steps it up. It will also be nice if the powerplay unit ends on the + side of the scorecard tonight as well.

Looking for a strong showing and 2 points on the road.

I agree... the world needs more meat and protein. Especially in stick form.

edit: bucky... what happens when we get the next whammy? I thought you only get 4.

Indeed, listening on the radio/reading box scores and watching the game live are two different animals, the problem is that is how most of the poll guys vote, reading the box score because it's impossible to view every game.

I'll be listening on the radio for both tonight's game and the Tuesday game at BC. After last night, any points from these two games, if possible, are bonus.

Then again, this team can't afford to lose by a 5-1 or higher margin then go into BC. After what will be five games in nine days, they may need they annual bye weekend two weeks from today to regroup, especially if it is a zero pt. gain.

Pat, I think both you and I know there will be a lot more than four whammies this year.

I hate to say it but the question has already been asked and it's a good one by LowellFan90. Is this team any better or worse than it was under Whitehead?

The short answer:

Certainly, this program has improved dramatically in off-ice and arena modifications since then but the failure to balance the classes is the #1 issue that hasn't, it's actually gotten worse. Finding consistent scoring is #2 and being able to have a goalie in queue due to graduation is #3. Stacking the class every three/four years is OK but the problem is they haven't made the NCAA tourney and that's what is frustrating as a long term goal but short term as people sit here knowing it's going to be 2012 or even 2013 before we have a legitimate class. Will the fan base and more importantly, the administration have the patience to tolerate it.

Speaking of admin, anyone happen to notice a certain former NYC mayor in town last night. Is that a sign to come for late 2012 when a certain Mass. Republican seat is up for grabs because I sure as hell thought so??
