Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

Not sandbagging here, but I don't see a Montreal team playing without 8 regulars being able to keep up with the Bruins. There's a reason why Price is getting Hart and Vezina consideration...he's got nobody in front of him.

Then why are you acting like a Maine fan? (kidding kidding)

The problem is that the Habs are in the Bruins heads. I don't know why, but the defense hasn't shown up against them at all this year and the only win was when the Bruins scored 8 goals. Everyone remembers, the fighting, but that was game was pure and utter chaos. The B's aren't going to win if it's a constant whistle fest - the power play is horrible and the penalty killing has been crap as well. We can debate whether it's because the Habs are good at drawing penalties or are a world class diving team, but it can't be debated that B's spend far too much of these games having to kill penalties.

That an the Pacioretti incident eerily reminds me of what happened in the playoffs in 2001 or 2002 where the B's were one game away from advanced, a Montreal player gets injured, and the Bruins get hammered for the next two games. Sigh.

Then we go straight to the Bruins attempting to beat henrik Lundquist. Ask jmh how that usually works. sandbag sandbag sandbag...

Haha, well, I guess it'll depend (among other things) on how many players Chara is allowed to maim without consequences. :p

All of them, hopefully.

I think you're referring to Kyle McLaren nearly decapitating Richard Zednik.

I just don't see how Montreal can overcome their injuries right now. Just a lot of junk on the roster at the moment. Maybe Plekanec can play.

If the Bruins are going to injure someone, would it be too much to ask for it to be Scott Gomez? He of the 1 goal in 32 games, despite playing 20 minutes a night? It's win/win, right? You injure Gomez, and both fanbases go home happy. :p

... how do you feel about Hal Gill?

(I am a towel)

Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

Mark Recchi tells WEEI that Max Pacioretty was tweeting from a movie theatre days after his "severe" concussion.

Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

He's lucky if it wasn't as severe as initially diagnosed. Isn't that a good thing? I don't think he's hiding the fact that he was on Twitter a few days after the accident.

You're right, he is definitely lucky that he didn't have a severe concussion.

No matter, the Habs are in the Bruins head until they start winning some games against the Canadians. It should be an interesting game tonight to say the least.

Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

I feel I was monumentally off when the Canadiens signed him. Don't injure Skillsy!

I think he's up there in terms of Unloved PC Grads with Jeannine Garofalo and John "Everyone is Racist Except Me" Thompson

The only person on Montreal - or any team - I'd ever advocate injuring is Gionta, but he's almost unhittable. So it's not even worth it. He's like Wolverine.

Yes.

Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

you guys are presuming much about what bruins players are thinking based on win/loss as opposed to how close most of those games were ( there was on where montreal just dominated). This is as much of a guess as anyone, but I don't really think the habs are in boston's head. Sure, they have the record, but most of those wins came on OT, or bad penalties and the games were quite close.

You want to talk about one team being in anothers head, look at UNH/ BC. When was the last time BC lost to UNH in a tourny game? I can't remember since its obviously more than a decade ago.

As for Boston's general play vs NJ, another close game until boston stepped it up as they do against good opponents. I wish there could be more changes being generated down low as the D seem to shoot first more often than not. The bruins PP finally clicked, but still is lacking east/west movement for whatever reason. Glad to see chara sneaking up to the slot vis a vis Kovalchuk to get a snipe. It worked great the last few years, they might as well keep it up! Finally, I know Jillian preeches a defense first system, but I would love to see Senguin get more opportunities to use his abilities as a sniper. The fact Lucic is the leading goal scorer this year says a lot about how deep the team is on snipers alone ( ryder and horton are too streaky)

Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

I believe the answer to your question is 1997 Hockey East semifinals ;)

Biggest thing I've seen in the games between the Bruins and Habs is the B's goaltending simply hasn't been good enough. It all starts there.

Courtesy of Battle of California:

Joe Pavelski and Matt Cooke couldn't be more different. Here are just a few examples of the differences between them:
- Matt Cooke has 129 penalty minutes. Joe Pavelski only has 22.
- Joe Pavelski plays center. Matt Cooke plays left wing.
- Joe Pavelski helps people with disabilities. Matt Cooke gives people disabilities.
- Joe Pavelski helps old ladies cross the street. Matt Cooke slough-foots them and steals their coin purses.
- Matt Cooke elbows people in the head. Joe Pavelski serves elbow macaroni to homeless veterans.
- Joe Pavelski was named "Nicest Guy" in his high-school year book. Matt Cooke wasn't named anything because they don't have yearbooks in Juvenile Detention Centers.
- Matt Cooke kneed Alex Ovechkin. Joe Pavelski has a niece named Alexis.
- Joe Pavelski buys Girl Scout cookies every year. Matt Cooke isn't allowed within 500 yards of any Girl Scouts.
- Matt Cooke targets heads. Joe Pavelski heads to Target for low prices on quality merchandise.
- Joe Pavelski sacrifices his own goals for the benefit of others. Matt Cooke sacrifices lambs on a blood-stained altar in the Penguins locker room.
- Matt Cooke gets suspended. Joe Pavelski bought a pair of suspenders as a gift, and it was the best birthday present Patrick Marleau ever received.
- Joe Pavelski tips the Zamboni driver. Matt Cooke trips him.
- Joe Pavelski visits sick kids in the hospital. Matt Cooke does too, but only to laugh and steal their pain medication.
- Matt Cooke is a repeat offender. Joe Pavelski loves watching repeats of The Defenders.
- Joe Pavelski set up a youth hockey rink for underprivileged kids. Matt Cooke runs an unlicensed day care center out of a rusty shack in his backyard.
- Matt Cooke has been disciplined by the league five times. Joe Pavelski has five adorable puppies.
- Joe Pavelski is the NHL player of the week, will set a new career high for points this season, and is a playoff hero. Matt Cooke is an *******.

Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

Nice list Rimbaud. However, you could put in just about any player in the league to replace Pavelski with the exception of Bertuzzi.

Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

I liked this one from the comments:

"Matt Cooke breaks rookies. Joe Pavelski bakes cookies."

Newest Red Wing chirps the 'Nucks before last night's game. The kid makes Gerbe look like a giant! :D

See Jon? Wasn't sandbagging...though Montreal injuries had nothing to do with this one. Just a very good game by Boston and a poor one by Montreal.
