Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

Question (said in a Dwight Schrute voice): Does the individual who opens the penalty box door have any responsibilities besides opening and closing the door?

Question: How does one get that job?

Question: Why does that individual (usually a male, just an observation) have to wear a tie? Is there a casual day concept?

I don't know who Dwight Schrute is, so I don't know if you're being serious...but if you are, I worked as an off ice official 15 years ago for the Kentucky Thoroughblades (AHL) in their inaugural season (which was my last year of graduate school). I have some great stories from that year.

In case you are serious, the penalty box attendant does have responsibilities beyond the opening and closing of the door, and even that is a little more pressurized than you might think.

I don't know how one gets the job at NHL level; for me, I walked into Ron DiGregorio's office (the owner, also was the VP of USA Hockey at the time IIRC) and told him I was also from New Hampshire, loved hockey, and would love to work for the team. That was all it took...it's not like Lexington was a hockey hotbed before, during, or after the Thoroughblades got there.

Believe it or not, we did have two female off ice officials, and one did work the penalty box once (the assignments were rotated game by game). As for our dress code, we just had to wear slacks and a horrible plum colored sweater with a Thoroughblades patch. But, this wasn't exactly a well-oiled machine, given it was an expansion franchise. The goal judge sat on a stool, not in glass encased booth (cue up the Anchorman jokes) or anything, and was subjected to merciless heckling from the fans who were literally sitting right next to him.

Another shutout for the King, the Rangers back to winning ways, and now even with Montreal in 6th and 7 points up on Carolina in 9th (though Montreal has a game in hand and Carolina has two).

So this Lundqvist guy is pretty good ;). When was the last time someone had 11 shutouts in a season?

Speaking of shutouts...Canadiens whitewashed for the third straight game.

The only good thing was by the end of the game, Scott Gomez was booed every time he touched the puck. At home. GTFO, Gomez.

Devils set a franchise record tonight for longest scoreless streak. It's now over 160 minutes straight.

As hard as they've tried to make sure neither team scores any goals for the past 20 years, I'm surprised their record is that short.

Well, they usually pot one every once in a while to pretend that they're trying to keep the game interesting for the fans.

Everyone wave goodbye to the LA Kings, who lose Anze Kopitar for six weeks.

What'd he do, and to who?

Elbow to Ryan Johnson's head. Asessed a 5 minute major and a game misconduct. Video is available on Puck Daddy.

I'm waiting for a Lidstrom bomb from the blue line.

I wanted another one. :( At this point in time I don't know how many more I'm going to get to see.
