Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

Right but a hit like that by the end boards isn't nearly as dangerous as hit like that by the stanchion...

Nobody is asking for Chara to be punished for the result of the hit. The result that should be punished is that of Chara's decision to hit him in that spot in that manner...which was SMASHING HIS HEAD INTO TO A FIXED METAL POLE FULL SPEED. Players are held accountable for keeping control of their stick, why not for where and how they hit someone?

The police thing is rather much though.

This is all I have been trying to argue as well. Agreed on all of the fallout being a little overkill, though. This in no way warrants a criminal investigation. Pretty ridiculous.

Are we at sensitivity camp? When you follow through, you follow through. When things are happening at 30 mph, its that much harder ,especially if your keeping track of 10 guys. I'm not advocating dirty hits obviously, but lets get realistic...if every guy was on egg shells when they layed another guy out, this game might as well be soccer.

Curious if you actually watch soccer. Soccer, particularly in the English Premier League (I refuse to acknowledge Barclays), is an unbelievably physical game.

If he can keep track of ten guys, he can keep track of a partition that never moves.

So if I hit someone with my shoulder, follow through with my arm, my elbow comes up and hits them in the head, that's OK?

You know who also followed through? Matt Cooke when he hit Savard...

Not the same circumstances, but still worth pointing out that when you deliver a high hit that ends a guy's season, and only get a couple games for it, you probably shouldn't comment on other disciplinary action (or lack thereof).

I know players who can't remember which penalty box they need to go to unless the door is open for them... they'll stand outside the other teams door waiting. And the guy's been playing for the team for a few years now. :p

But, that's just good hockey. Always finish your checks. Isn't that what Eddie O has taught us NBC?

Good point in the comments - say, Joe...how's David Perron doing?

Well, yeah. He knows if he was still on the Bruins, he would have gotten off scott free.

Ugh. Does that mean another lockout coming?

Considering both the newly extended commissioner and the head of the NHLPA both have no problem locking out, the odds are looking good that they'll do it again.

But... I really don't think they can afford to. If they lock out again, they undue all the work they did for the last six years... which STILL never rebuilt fully from the lockout before that.

I think the looming NBA and NFL lockouts are a chance for the NHL to really hit their stride marketing-wise. I don't think prospective TV deals would be kicked around like they are if there was the chance of another lockout in 2012.

Good points. I heard that one of the big issues with Bettman is that he doesn't want players competing in the next olympics which might mean guys like Ovechkin and Malkin not playing in the NHL during the next olympic year because they want to play for their home country on their home soil. I can't remember where I heard this but this could be bad if it is true.

Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

I think the whole olympics thing is a negotiating tactic. As much as the NHL doesn't want them to go, they are going to use it as a bargaining chip to force the players to give something up and they'll allow it.

Bingo. They're just posturing.

Terry Pegula told me it would cost a lot more to buy the Leafs than the Sabres.

If this story in La Presse is correct, he wasn't kidding.

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which owns among other properties the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, the NBA's Toronto Raptors, and Toronto FC of MLS, is up for sale, according to a report in Montreal's La Presse on Saturday.

According to the report from the paper, the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, which owns 66 per cent of MLSE, has hired investment bank Morgan Stanley to find investors interested in buying their shares.

La Presse, citing an unnamed source, says the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan is asking $1.3 billion for its shares.

UPDATE:

The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP) said in a statement Saturday that it "will explore the possibility of selling its 66 per cent majority share of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment."

Darn, I can only cover a billion of that. Anyone care to spot me about $300 mil?

I'm only interested if the waffles are included though. ;)

The Rangers didn't really deserve two points in San Jose tonight, but I'm happy to take them anyway.

The number of high sticks that went uncalled in that game was amazing.

Went to Charlie Sheen Night at the ECHL Bakersfield Condors tonight. Got in for $2.50 for wearing a Hawaiian shirt like Charlie Sheen. :p

It's ECHL hockey, and it shows. But it's hockey. It's fun to watch. Bakersfield was passing quite well though. Aggressive entrance into the offensive zone. Bakersfield won 2-1 with 2 third period goals. A hell of a fight too after a knee to knee hit. I'm gonna try and find a video and post it.

Guillaume Lefebvre got the game winner for the Condors...former Bruins player.
