Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

Id like to see something constructive come out of this. Possibly the redesign of that area so its not so square. Its the 21st century. Foam isnt going to cut it.
Interesting idea. Does there have to be glass there at all? Could it be open just like the bench area so the number of dangerous extension areas are reduced? We'd have to trust players to be civil and avoid trying to go to the opponent's bench.

Re: 2010-2011 NHL Season Part II - Concussions Are Serious Business, Savvy?

As long as glass being in front of the benches doesn't happen. That would suck.

Oh, right. Because Ennis wasn't wheeled off on a stretcher. Got it.
Was it a penalty? I'd argue no intent, not really anything that could or should have been done differently by Lovejoy, no penalty, no injury.............seems different to me.

Well, when you have "bench clearing brawl" weeks like a few weeks ago, this would certainly bring that much more entertainment value. My guess is there really has to be some form of barrier between the two benches simply to prevent stupidity during games.

Let me ask you this, if Sean Avery did it what would be the length of his suspension? Would he ever be allowed to play hockey again? :)

On the seventh anniversary of Todd Bertuzzi's criminal assault on Steve Moore -- if you are of fan or symmetry, you will recall that Moore, who never played hockey again, sustained a concussion and non-displaced fractures of the third and fourth cervical vertebrae -- Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara shoved Pacioretty into the padded stanchion that separates the benches in the Bell Centre.
Stunning. I didn't recall the similarity of the vertebrae injuries. Feel better soon Max......

no matter who would have done it, i don't see the big deal on the hit itself. i hate the fact that a serious injury occurred, but it's not from the 'hit'.

He is 6'9 without skates. Almost any check of that nature he makes, his hands are going to be high.

Is this supposed to show intent? With a snapshot? The more I look at it, I would argue Chara's eyes are closed.

Are you supposed to be following through with your arms like that? Is that a clean hit? If so, then plenty more players are going to get hurt.

I agree with Max's statement though I wish he had addressed it to Chara directly. Chara might have ended his career and he's talking about Max's culpability in the accident. I like Chara, and don't think he intended to do it, but there's nothing wrong with taking responsibility and apologizing...........unless the lawyers get involved.

Air Canada may be on the right track with their approach.

I think Chara has respect for his opponents, but it's still lacking in many instances. Recent case in point - several Blackhawks taunted Brendan Morrison as he painfully made his way off the ice with an obvious knee injury. Hey Kaner, karma can be a *****. You'll learn. Disgusting.

So the Rangers have scored 4 goals tonight, unfortunately, only one of them were actually in Anaheim's net. :(

Seeing replay after replay (some slo-mo, some real-time):

He wanted to throw Max over the boards. However, the momentum, and the way he hit Max (which was indeed worthy of a penalty) caused the collision with the stanchion. I'm against (and always will be against) penalties/suspensions based on RESULTS of a hit. A suspension would fall under this category.

And for whoever brought up the Bertuzzi thing, it wasn't the initial hit that drew the ire of fans. It was the secondary driving of the head into the ice that caused the ruckus.

Disagree. His hands are still up finishing the hit right into the stanchion. If he knew the stanchion was there, it's disgusting. If he doesn't know the stanchion is there, it's stupid.

That's about it for me on this though. I have been through this enough today. :)

I don't disagree that the hit was stupid. It was a penalty, and a deserved one. What if Max wasn't hurt? Let's say he just had a bruise or something? Would people be calling for a suspension?

Given Chara's history, I highly doubt that he was thinking, "Oh, I'll faceplant him into the stanchion, that'll teach him to mess with me! He'll be okay!" Some other questionable players (TBA mentioned Avery), I'd think about their thoughts, but in the end, probably come up with the same result as what the NHL handed down (and yes, it pains me to say that, given I hate Avery and think he has no business in the NHL).

Unfortunate result (injury)? Hell yes. Fair (decision by NHL)? Yes.
